The Epitome margaritae eloquentiae in Leeds Special Collections is the only surviving copy of a book on rhetoric written in Latin by Lorenzo Guglielmo Traversagni (c.1425-1503). The author also appears in catalogues as under the pen names Laurentius Gulielmus Traversanus and Guillermus Saphoensis the name used in this work. [1] [2]
Traversagni was a Franciscan friar and humanist scholar from Savona, Northern Italy. [3] Considered to have been the first humanist professor of rhetoric at the University of Cambridge, In 1446 he attended the University of Padua to study philosophy and theology under Gaetano da Thiene and Francesco della Rovere who became Sixtus IV. [4] Traversagni wrote the Margaritae eloquentiae as a guide to rhetoric and the art of preaching. [5] The original book was published in 1478 under the full title of Rhetorica nova, sive, Margarita eloquentiae castigate ad eloquendum divina accommodata, (The new rhetoric, or, The pearl of purified eloquence, adapted to the expression of matters divine). [4]
The Epitome margaritae eloquentiae is a short summary of Rhetorica nova and was finished during Traversagni's' stay in Paris in 1480. It was only ever published in England by William Caxton probably in the same year. [6] Traversagni is known to have visited England twice in the 1470s and may have paid Caxton to print the book. The author could then sell copies to his pupils. [7]
In the Epitome Traversagni argues that preaching is a rhetorical skill which aims to promote Christian virtue. He was innovative in suggesting that sacred oratory should follow teachings on classical rhetoric. [3] At Cambridge Traversagni had lectured on Aristotle's Ethics and also the Rhetorica ad Herennium attributed to Cicero. He uses these philosophers' concepts of demonstrative logic to prove his point. [5] [8]
The copy of the Epitome in Leeds Special Collections is printed on Italian paper of the kind made in Fabriano and Genoa in the medieval period and has watermarks of the scissors type. [9] The binding is 20th century limp vellum with a smooth spine.
The 'Epitome has no title page. The 34 pages are printed in Caxton's type 2* with 29 long lines to a full page, probably in 1480 or 1481. [10] The signatures are [a6 b4 c6 d6 e8 f4]. There are no printed signatures, catchwords or pagination. [1] There are some unusual typographical features including the abbreviation of some common Latin words or word-endings, for example, '-t' with a feathered crossbar for '-tur' (lines 3 and 29) and an elongated '9' for '-us' (line 4 and others). [10]
The Epitome was formerly part of a volume which belonged to Anthony Higgin who was Dean of Ripon from 1608 to 1624. The rest of the volume is in the British Library. [6] It was removed from the volume and repaired and rebound by staff at the British Museum. [10] The Epitome was bought for the Brotherton Collection on 21 May 1960. [11]
There is a handwritten annotation on the verso of the final leaf of the book and the recto of an inserted leaf. This is in black ink and comprises a ballad with text and music A lytyll ballet mayde of ye yong dukes grace about Henry FitzRoy, Duke of Richmond and Somerset. [11]
An incunable or incunabulum is a book, pamphlet, or broadside that was printed in the earliest stages of printing in Europe, up to the year 1500. Incunabula were produced before the printing press became widespread on the continent and are distinct from manuscripts, which are documents written by hand. Some authorities on the history of printing include block books from the same time period as incunabula, whereas others limit the term to works printed using movable type.
William Caxton was an English merchant, diplomat and writer. He is thought to be the first person to introduce a printing press into England in 1476, and as a printer to be the first English retailer of printed books.

The St Albans Press was the third printing press set up in England, in 1479. It was situated in the Abbey Gateway, St Albans, a part of the Benedictine Monastery of St Albans. The name of the printer is unknown, only referred to by Wynkyn de Worde in a reprinting of one of the St Albans books as 'Sometime schoolmaster'. He has sometimes been identified as John Marchall, master of St Albans School; however, a passage written by Worde in 1497 implies that the printer was deceased, and Marchall is known to have lived until 1501. Recent research has produced the name John Haule as a possible candidate for the Schoolmaster Printer. He presented the school with its first printed textbook, the Elegantiolae, which was the first book printed at the press, and he was a printer, probably in St Albans in 1479.
The Royal manuscripts are one of the "closed collections" of the British Library, consisting of some 2,000 manuscripts collected by the sovereigns of England in the "Old Royal Library" and given to the British Museum by George II in 1757. They are still catalogued with call numbers using the prefix "Royal" in the style "Royal MS 2. B. V". As a collection, the Royal manuscripts date back to Edward IV, though many earlier manuscripts were added to the collection before it was donated. Though the collection was therefore formed entirely after the invention of printing, luxury illuminated manuscripts continued to be commissioned by royalty in England as elsewhere until well into the 16th century. The collection was expanded under Henry VIII by confiscations in the Dissolution of the Monasteries and after the falls of Henry's ministers Cardinal Wolsey and Thomas Cromwell. Many older manuscripts were presented to monarchs as gifts; perhaps the most important manuscript in the collection, the Codex Alexandrinus, was presented to Charles I in recognition of the diplomatic efforts of his father James I to help the Eastern Orthodox churches under the rule of the Ottoman Empire. The date and means of entry into the collection can only be guessed at in many if not most cases. Now the collection is closed in the sense that no new items have been added to it since it was donated to the nation.
Johann Veldener, also known as Jan Veldener or Johan Veldenaer; was an early printer in Flanders. He worked as a punchcutter and printer in Cologne, together with William Caxton, who may have financed his first books. They both left for Flanders in 1472. Evidence indicates that Veldener assisted Caxton in setting up his printing office in Bruges and helped printing his first work there, the 1472-1473 Recuyell of the Historyes of Troye by Raoul Lefèvre. Afterwards, Veldener went to Leuven and set up his printing company there, becoming the second printer in Leuven after John of Westphalia, and the third or fourth in the Netherlands. He entered the Leuven University on 30 July 1473 in the faculty of Medicine.

Johannes (Hans) Grüninger (1455–1533) was a German printer whose career spanned from 1482 to 1533 and produced up to 500 publications. Grüninger was one of the single most prolific printers of Strasbourg, printing up to 80 books a year. While a great deal of his publications were Catholic, he managed to print a great variety of works ranging from humanist to scientific texts. His work was fairly equally representative of both Latin and the vernacular; about 39% of his works were printed in Latin and the remaining 61% in German.
Blessed Marco da Montegallo was an Italian Roman Catholic priest from the Order of Friars Minor. He was born to a nobleman and served as a doctor in Ascoli Piceno before he was pressured into marriage in 1451 - the couple annulled their marriage after both entered the religious life. Father Marco is best known for establishing pawnshops for the poor across various Italian cities and for being a preacher of love.
