The event served as a qualifier for the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan.

Egypt competed at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. Originally scheduled to take place during the summer of 2020, the Games were postponed to 23 July to 8 August 2021, because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Since the nation's debut in 1912, Egyptian athletes have appeared in every edition of the Summer Olympic Games except 1932 and 1980, when they joined the United States-led boycott.
Morocco competed at the 2019 African Games held from 19 to 31 August 2019 in Rabat, Morocco. This is the first time that Morocco hosted the competition. It is also the first time since the 1978 All-Africa Games that Morocco took part in the competition after being banned. In total, athletes representing Morocco won 31 gold medals, 32 silver medals and 46 bronze medals and the country finished in 5th place in the medal table.
