Eric Frey (born 1963, in Vienna) is an Austrian publicist and political scientist. He works as an editor for the Austrian newspaper Der Standard and is correspondent for the London business paper Financial Times .
Eric Frey was born in 1963 in Vienna as the son of Jewish parents who escaped Nazism. In 1981, he moved to the United States of America and attended Princeton University where he studied Public Affairs. [1]
He began his career as a journalist in Frankfurt. There, he worked as a reporter for the AP-Dow Jones News Service until 1990. Since 1991, he has been working for the Viennese newspaper Der Standard and since 1996 as the departmental manager for foreign affairs and economy. He wrote his doctoral thesis in 2003/2004 New Orleans, where he was a visiting professor from 2001 until 2002 at the Marshall Plan Chair for Austrian Studies of the University of New Orleans. [2] The thesis was on history and specifically the trade politics of Bill Clinton.
Frey has published several books, most of which deal with contemporary historical topics.
Frey is the president of Or Chadasch, the Reform synagogue in Vienna founded by his parents. [3]
His daughter is the leftist politician and Yiddishist musician Isabel Frey. [4]
In an op-ed in the newspaper Der Standard of August 2014, he wrote on the Russo-Ukrainian War that negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin would be useless, because he would lie to any discussion partner. Instead somehow it would have to be made clear that Putin miscalculated. That would only be possible with further sanctions and if necessary, the discontinuation of all business relations with Moscow, as well as with direct military help for Kyiv in form of weapons deliveries to Ukraine, stationing of NATO troops in Ukraine and US lead air raids against separatists and Russian lines of communication. On 24 November 2014, Frey was part of a televised discussion at the Austrian political talk show Pulse 4 News "Pro and Contra" on the Russo-Ukrainian War. Frey called another guest, German stock trader Dirk Müller, a Russian propagandist based on his description of American interests in Ukraine. He also described Johannes Voggenhuber of the Austrian Green party as inhumane towards the Ukrainian people. [6]
He was heavily criticized in his blog at the Standard by many readers for his, as seen by them, one sided description of the Ukrainian conflict and his conduct during the televised discussion. [7]

The Soviet War Memorial in Vienna, Austria, more formally known as the Heroes' Monument of the Red Army, is located at Vienna's Schwarzenbergplatz. The semi-circular white marble colonnade partially enclosing a twelve-metre figure of a Soviet soldier was unveiled in 1945. Isabel Frey is a Yiddish singer, an ethnomusicologist and a social-justice and peace activist. In 2023, she co-founded the Jewish-Arab peace initiative "Standing Together Vienna". In 2020, she ran for district council in the historically Jewish Leopoldstadt district for the party LINKS Wien in Vienna municipal elections. Her first album, Millennial Bundist, was released in September, 2020, and her second album "Di fliendike pave" in October 2024.
"Where have you been for eight years?", "Where have you been for the last eight years?", or "Why have you been silent during the past eight years?" is a rhetorical question widely used by Russian propaganda in the context of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in support of Russia, mainly pointing out what Ukraine has been doing to the Donbas during the war in Donbas (2014–2022), and that the Russo-Ukrainian War has been ongoing since the 2014 Russian annexation of Crimea. It has been described as Russian pro-war propaganda.
The Zeitenwende speech was an address delivered to the Bundestag by Olaf Scholz, the Chancellor of Germany, on 27 February 2022. His speech was a reaction to the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine on 24 February. Scholz described the attack as a "historic turning point" and announced that in response his government would use a €100 billion fund to significantly increase military spending, reversing Germany's previously cautious defence policy.
In July 2024, Prime Minister of Hungary Viktor Orbán announced undergoing several uncoordinated meetings that he referred to as "peace missions", visiting President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Kyiv before traveling to Moscow to meet with President of Russia Vladimir Putin, followed with him visiting Beijing to meet with Xi Jinping, then traveling to the United States to attend the 2024 Washington summit and to meet Donald Trump at Mar-a-Lago. The meetings notably took place amidst heightened tensions and ongoing conflict in Ukraine following Russia's invasion in 2022, with China increasing diplomatic ties to Russia in the midst of economic sanctions by the European Union and the United States.
