Eric Frey (born 1963, in Vienna) is an Austrian publicist and political scientist. He works as an editor for the Austrian newspaper Der Standard and is correspondent for the London business paper Financial Times .
Eric Frey was born in 1963 in Vienna as the son of Jewish parents who escaped Nazism. In 1981, he moved to the United States of America and attended Princeton University where he studied Public Affairs. [1]
He began his career as a journalist in Frankfurt. There, he worked as a reporter for the AP-Dow Jones News Service until 1990. Since 1991, he has been working for the Viennese newspaper Der Standard and since 1996 as the departmental manager for foreign affairs and economy. He wrote his doctoral thesis in 2003/2004 New Orleans, where he was a visiting professor from 2001 until 2002 at the Marshall Plan Chair for Austrian Studies of the University of New Orleans. [2] The thesis was on history and specifically the trade politics of Bill Clinton.
Frey has published several books, most of which deal with contemporary historical topics.
Frey is the president of Or Chadasch, the Reform synagogue in Vienna founded by his parents. [3]
His daughter is the leftist politician and Yiddishist musician Isabel Frey. [4]
In an op-ed in the newspaper Der Standard of August 2014, he wrote on the Russo-Ukrainian War that negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin would be useless, because he would lie to any discussion partner. Instead somehow it would have to be made clear that Putin miscalculated. That would only be possible with further sanctions and if necessary, the discontinuation of all business relations with Moscow, as well as with direct military help for Kiev in form of weapons deliveries to Ukraine, stationing of NATO troops in the Ukraine and US lead air raids against separatists and Russian lines of communication. On 24 November 2014, Frey was part of a televised discussion at the Austrian political talk show Pulse 4 News "Pro and Contra" on the Russo-Ukrainian War. Frey called another guest, German stock trader Dirk Müller, a Russian propagandist based on his description of American interests in the Ukraine. He also described Johannes Voggenhuber of the Austrian Green party as inhumane towards the Ukrainian people. [6]
He was heavily criticized in his blog at the Standard by many readers for his, as seen by them, one sided description of the Ukrainian conflict and his conduct during the televised discussion. [7]
Othmar Spann was a conservative Austrian philosopher, sociologist and economist whose radical anti-liberal and anti-socialist views, based on early 19th century Romantic ideas expressed by Adam Müller et al. and popularized in his books and lecture courses, helped antagonise political factions in Austria during the interwar years.

The Soviet War Memorial in Vienna, more formally known as the Heldendenkmal der Roten Armee is located at Vienna's Schwarzenbergplatz. The semi-circular white marble colonnade partially enclosing a twelve-metre figure of a Red Army Soldier was unveiled in 1945. Ruscism, also known as Russism, Rashism, or Russian fascism, is a theory that Russia has been transformed into a fascist or neo-fascist country. It is also used to refer to the ideology of Russian military expansionism, and has been used as a label to describe an undemocratic system and nationality cult mixed with ultranationalism and a personality cult. That transformation was described as based on the ideas of the "special civilizational mission" of the Russians, such as Moscow as the third Rome and expansionism, which manifests itself in anti-Ukrainianism. "Address concerning the events in Ukraine" was a televised address by Russian President Vladimir Putin on 21 February 2022, announcing that the Russian government would recognise the Ukrainian separatist regions of the Donetsk People's Republic and the Luhansk People's Republic as independent. During the speech, Putin also made a number of claims regarding Ukrainian history and Ukrainian domestic politics. The speech, which marked a significant escalation in the 2021–2022 Russo-Ukrainian crisis, was followed three days later by the speech declaring "a special military operation" in Ukraine—the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine.
"Takogo kak Putin" is a 2002 Russian propaganda pop song written by Alexander Yelin and performed by the all-girl band Poyushchie vmeste. The song, written during the first term of Russian president Vladimir Putin (2000–2004), sarcastically idealises Putin; however, contrary to the song's satirical intentions, the song was officially used by Putin's 2004 re-election campaign, and the satirical undertones were largely unnoticed and ignored by the Russian populace. The song was a one-hit wonder and is considered one of the most notable songs in the cult of personality surrounding Putin.
