Eric Joris is a Belgian multidisciplinary artist and theatre director. In 1991 he founded CREW Eric Joris.

Early life and education

Eric Joris studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts (Antwerp) (BE); the Brussels RITS Institute for Media and Film; languages, art history and economy at Sorbonne, (Paris); Cambridge University (United Kingdom); Heidelberg (Collegium Palatinum); and Tokyo (ETP fundings by European Government).

Career

Joris is a multimedia artist with an initial education in filmmaking, covering many areas such as industrial design, graphic design, comics, visual arts, installation art, and performance art. Under his direction CREW Eric Joris adamantly tries to make performances at the melting point between live art and digital media.

He develops methods for connecting state-of-the-art technology with artistic forms, often exploring and questioning the human senses, particularly our perception of sound, movement and space. His company CREW Eric Joris generates live-art projects that can be described as immersive theatre.

The works of Joris are frequently co-produced and/or sponsored by pioneering institutes for technology, such as Fraunhofer Society and Max Planck Society.

CREW Eric Joris participated in the program 2020 3D Media, which has the backing of the European Commission. CREW is also artistic partner in the EU-funded multidisciplinary research consortium Dreamspace, which develops tools that enable creative professionals to combine live performances, video and computer generated imagery in real time.

Recognition and awards

Joris has received prizes and fellowships from the French and Flemish government, as well as from various foundations.

Other activities

Joris is a mentor of the Forecast Platform 2015-2016, an international platform that promotes emerging talents.

Audience immersion is a storytelling technique which attempts to make the audience feel as though they are a part of the story or performance, a state which may be referred to as "transportation" into the narrative, permitting high levels of suspension of disbelief. Audience immersion may be used to enhance learning or to create a more realistic experience. Various methods may be employed to this end, including narrative perspective in writing or technical design in the performing arts. Michael Counts is an American stage director and designer of theater, opera, and immersive performance events and a creator and producer of large-scale public art installations and digital platforms. Ghislaine Boddington is a British artist, curator, presenter and director specialising in body responsive technologies, immersive experiences and collective embodiment, pioneering it as 'hyper-enhancement of the senses' and 'hyper-embodiment' since the late 80s.

Lundahl & Seitl is a Stockholm-based artist duo formed in 2003 by Christer Lundahl and Martina Seitl. The duo's practice consists of site-specific situations and cross-disciplinary projects, "where the line between action and perception is renegotiated", as noted by Frida Sandström.

Philippe Bekaert was a professor in visual computing at the Expertise center for Digital Media EDM of Hasselt University, Belgium. His research areas include omnidirectional (360°) and free viewpoint video, immersive environments and Virtual Reality, multicamera systems, management of large data transfer, and general-purpose GPU computing.
