Oscar Leonard Carl Pistorius is a South African former professional sprinter and convicted murderer. He was first convicted of culpable homicide of his then-girlfriend,which was subsequently upgraded to murder upon appeal. Both of his feet were amputated when he was 11 months old as a result of a congenital defect;he was born missing the outside of both feet and both fibulas. Pistorius ran in both nondisabled sprint events and in sprint events for below-knee amputees. He was the 10th athlete to compete at both the Paralympic Games and Olympic Games.
Johan Coenraad Froneman is a South African retired judge who was a justice of the Constitutional Court of South Africa from October 2009 to May 2020. He joined the judiciary as a judge of the Eastern Cape Division in 1994 and was elevated to the apex court by President Jacob Zuma. She was formerly the President of the Supreme Court of Appeal from 2017 to 2022 before she was elevated to the position of Deputy Chief Justice of South Africa in September 2022. She joined the bench in May 2000 as a judge of the Transkei Division of the High Court of South Africa and was elevated to the Supreme Court of Appeal in 2006.
Xola Mlungisi Petse is a retired South African judge who was the Deputy President of the Supreme Court of Appeal between 2019 and 2024. A former attorney,he joined the Supreme Court as a puisne judge in June 2012. Before that,he was a judge of the Eastern Cape High Court from July 2005 to May 2012.
Rammaka Steven Mathopo is a judge of the Constitutional Court of South Africa. Before his elevation to that court in January 2022,he served in the Supreme Court of Appeal between June 2015 and December 2021. He was formerly a judge of the Gauteng High Court from January 2006 to May 2015,and he practised as an attorney for 17 years before then.
Dumisani Hamilton Zondi is a South African judge who is the Deputy President of the Supreme Court of Appeal. He was appointed as the chairperson of the Electoral Court in December 2022. Before his elevation to the Supreme Court in June 2014,he served in the Western Cape High Court between 2007 and 2014,as well as in the Competition Appeal Court between 2011 and 2014. He entered legal practice as an attorney in 1986.
David Unterhalter is a South African jurist and judge of the Supreme Court of Appeal of South Africa. He is also professor of law at the University of Cape Town. Before he was appointed to the bench of the Gauteng High Court in January 2018,Unterhalter was a prominent advocate,specialising in public law,competition law,and trade law. He was called to the Johannesburg Bar in 1990 and took silk in 2002.
Tati Moffat Makgoka is a South African judge of the Supreme Court of Appeal. Formerly an attorney in Pretoria,he served in the Gauteng High Court from August 2009 until June 2018,when he was elevated to the Supreme Court of Appeal. He was an acting judge in the Constitutional Court in 2023.
Petrus Arnolus Koen is South African judge who is currently serving in the KwaZulu-Natal Division of the High Court of South Africa. Before joining the bench in November 2006,he was Senior Counsel in Pietermaritzburg. He is best known for presiding in the corruption trial of former president Jacob Zuma from May 2021 until he recused himself in January 2023.
Mokgere Busisiwe Shareen Masipa is a South African judge of the High Court of South Africa. She was appointed to the KwaZulu-Natal Division in July 2016 after 14 years as a practising attorney in Durban. She is an expert on labour law.
Lebotsang Orphan "Ronnie" Bosielo was a South African judge of the Supreme Court of Appeal. Formerly a judge of the High Court of South Africa,he served in the appellate court from October 2009 until his death in May 2018. He was an acting judge in the Constitutional Court in 2012 and 2016,and he was thrice nominated unsuccessfully for permanent appointment to the apex court.
Robert Wolseley Nugent is a South African retired judge who served in the Supreme Court of Appeal from 2002 to 2013. Formerly an advocate and Senior Counsel in Johannesburg,he was appointed to the bench in 1993 as a judge of the Transvaal Provincial Division. In 2018,he chaired the Nugent Commission into maladministration at the South African Revenue Service.
Thomas Dante Cloete is a South African retired judge who served in the Supreme Court of Appeal from January 2003 until his retirement in May 2013. Formerly an advocate and Senior Counsel in Johannesburg,he was appointed to the bench in 1991 as a judge of the Transvaal Provincial Division.
Nigel Paul Willis is a South African retired judge who served in the Supreme Court of Appeal from July 2013 until his retirement in October 2018. Before that,between November 1998 and June 2013,he served in the Gauteng High Court,where he gained a reputation for conservative and pro-capitalist jurisprudence. He was also a judge of the Labour Appeal Court.
Clive Michael Plasket is a South African jurist and retired judge who served in the Supreme Court of Appeal from 2019 to 2022. He was formerly a judge of the Eastern Cape High Court from 2003 to 2019. Before that,he was a practising attorney and a legal academic at Rhodes University,renowned especially as an expert on administrative law.
Mandela Makaula is a South African judge who is currently serving in the Eastern Cape Division of the High Court of South Africa. He joined the bench in 2010 after two decades in practice as an attorney and magistrate in the Eastern Cape. He was an acting judge in the Supreme Court of Appeal in 2022.
On 21 February 2024,the National Assembly of South Africa voted to impeach Judge John Hlophe,a judge of the High Court of South Africa and the judge president of the Western Cape Division. Hlophe was accused of improper interference in the deliberations of the Constitutional Court in litigation involving the interests of Jacob Zuma. His impeachment was the result of a finding by the Judicial Service Commission that his conduct in this regard amounted to gross misconduct. Hlophe was the first judge to be impeached under the post-apartheid Constitution.
John Eldrid Smith is a South African judge of the Eastern Cape Division of the High Court of South Africa. He joined the bench in July 2010. Before that,he was the chief executive officer of Smith Tabata Inc.,which he co-founded in 1984.
