Erik Sten (born October 1967 in New Haven,Connecticut [1] ) is an American politician who served as a member of the Portland City Commission from 1997 to 2008.
Sten was born in New Haven,Connecticut and raised in Portland,Oregon. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Stanford University in 1989. [1]
In the mid-1990s,Sten was a founding member of X-PAC,a group of politically minded young citizens,and has participated heavily in the Oregon Bus Project. [2]
Sten was first elected to Position 2 on the Portland City Commission in 1996,defeating Chuck Duffy. He ran successful campaigns for re-election in 1998,2002,and 2006. [3]
As a Commissioner,Sten was an early supporter of Portland's publicly financed elections system. [4] In 2005,he was named as one of Oregon's 15 most influential people. [5]
During the 2000 presidential election,Sten was an Oregon state co-chair of GoreNet. [6] GoreNet was a group that supported the Al Gore campaign with a focus on grassroots and online organizing as well as hosting small dollar donor events. [7]
He resigned from his position April 4,2008,and was succeeded by attorney Nick Fish.
After leaving office,Sten relocated to Seattle,Washington. In 2019,it was announced that Sten had joined Strategies 360,a political consulting and lobbying firm,as an advisor. [8]
Neil Edward Goldschmidt was an American businessman and Democratic politician from the state of Oregon who held local,state,and federal offices over three decades. After serving as the United States Secretary of Transportation under President Jimmy Carter and governor of Oregon,Goldschmidt was at one time considered the most powerful and influential figure in Oregon's politics. His career and legacy were severely damaged in 2004 by revelations that he raped a young teenage girl in 1973,during his first term as mayor of Portland.
John Albert Kitzhaber is an American former politician and physician who served as the 35th and 37th governor of Oregon from 1995 to 2003 and again from 2011 to 2015. In February 2015,shortly after beginning his fourth term,Kitzhaber resigned from office and was replaced by Secretary of State Kate Brown. A member of the Democratic Party,Kitzhaber was the longest-serving governor in the state's history.

The Portland Tribune is a weekly newspaper published every Wednesday in Portland,Oregon,United States. It is part of the Pamplin Media Group,which publishes a number of community newspapers in the Portland metropolitan area. Launched in 2001,the paper was published twice weekly until 2008,when it was reduced to weekly. It returned to twice-weekly publication in 2014 and was again reduced to weekly publication in 2020. It was distributed free from its 2001 launch until October 2022,then becoming available only by paid subscription or purchase at retail outlets.
James Michael Francke was an American judge from New Mexico and director of the state's Corrections Department,the governmental bureau which manages prisons,inmates,and parolees. He was later appointed by then-Oregon governor Neil Goldschmidt to oversee a plan to double the state's inmate capacity as director of Oregon's Department of Corrections. On January 18,1989,his body was discovered outside the department's office building in Salem;an autopsy determined he had been murdered the night before. A local petty criminal was eventually tried and convicted for the crime,and sentenced to life in prison without parole. However,the convicted killer maintains his innocence,and several conspiracy theories have been advocated,claiming that the killing was a murder for hire conducted by corrupt state prison officials threatened by an investigation Francke was conducting into prison mismanagement. In 2019,the man convicted for the murder of Francke was released from prison after his murder conviction was thrown out by a federal magistrate in Portland,who ruled he did not receive a fair trial;four years later,he was given a full release when his indictment by the county was dismissed with prejudice and his murder conviction was expunged from the record.
Jefferson Smith is an American former radio personality and politician who served in the Oregon House of Representatives,representing District 47 in east Portland,from 2009 to 2012. He was one of two candidates for Mayor of Portland in 2012 to advance beyond the primary election,but lost to Charlie Hales in the November general election. He also founded Bus Project.
