Erol Zavar (born 1 January 1969) is the former editor of Odak magazine, a political prisoner, and a poet from Turkey. [1]

Zavar was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Ankara State Security Court No. 2 in 2001 on charges of attempting to change the constitutional order in accordance with Article 146 of the Turkish Penal Code. [2] He was sent to Tekirdağ F Type Prison No. 1 for the execution of his sentence. Zavar was allegedly neglected by prison and hospital staff after he was found to be suffering from bladder cancer. [3]

In 2004, a campaign was organized by his lawyers, his wife and relatives due to his illness. The campaign resulted in him being given treatment for cancer. Despite nine surgeries, his health deteriorated. In 2006, a new campaign was organized with the motto Don't Let This Light Go Out. The campaign is still ongoing.

Within the scope of the campaign, a 35-minute documentary film, released by Grup Kizilirmak, was directed by Nesrin Cavadzade and Hüseyin Karabey. The film focuses on the health problems of prisoners and inmates held under F-Type isolation based on the example of Erol Zavar.

This situation of Zavar was also published in the newspapers Cumhuriyet , Evrensel , Radikal , Sabah , Özgür Gündem , Birgün , Yeniharman and Kaçak Yayın.

Erol Zavar's first poetry book, Death, was published at Cadde Publications in July 2006.

In 2019, Zavar was treated for a heart condition at Bolu Izzet Baysal University Hospital. [4]

Mazlum Doğan was a journalist and a founding member of the Kurdistan Workers' Party. He was a Kurdish Alevi. He was the first chief editor of the party's newspaper Serxwebûn. In 1979, he had planned to leave Turkey towards Syria, but was arrested and served time in the infamous Diyarbakir No. 5 prison. Mazlum Doğan committed suicide in protest of the Turkish coup d'état and the inhumane conditions he and other prisoners were facing inside of the penitentiary. Today he is seen as a hero and a martyr for the Kurdish resistance movement.

Ahmet Şık is a Turkish investigative journalist, the author of several books, a trade unionist, and member of Parliament in Turkey. His book, The Imam's Army, investigating the controversial Gülen movement of the Islamic preacher Fethullah Gülen, led to his detention for a year in 2011–2012 and the book's being seized and banned. He was under indictment in the OdaTV case of the Ergenekon trials; his cause has been taken up by English PEN, an association of writers fighting for freedom of expression. In 2016, the prosecutor in this case requested Şık's acquittal. On 29 December 2016, Şık was taken into custody once again on charges of "propaganda of terrorist organisations", with reference to 11 tweets that he had published. The following day, an Istanbul judge ordered Ahmet's arrest. According to lawyers, Şık was denied access to legal advice, held in solitary confinement, and not given drinking water for three days. He ran as an HDP candidate in 2018 Turkish elections and got elected from Istanbul's second electoral district. In 2020, he resigned from HDP, citing political differences and after sitting as an independent for a year, he joined the Workers' Party of Turkey.

Özgür Gündem was an Istanbul-based daily Turkish language newspaper, mainly read by Kurds. Launched in May 1992, the newspaper was known for its extensive reporting on the Kurdish-Turkish conflict, and was regularly accused of making propaganda for the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK). Its editors and staff have frequently been arrested and prosecuted, which resulted in multiple publication bans. Since April 1994, the publication continued under different names until Özgür Gündem was relaunched in 2011.

Bianet is a Turkish press agency based in Beyoğlu, Istanbul. Its focus is on human rights and it is mainly funded by a Swedish organization. It was established in January 2000 by journalists around Nadire Mater, former representative of Reporters Without Borders, and left-wing activist Ertuğrul Kürkçü and is tied with Inter Press Service. Mustafa Koçak was a political prisoner arrested in Turkey on September 23, 2017, a court sentenced him to an aggravated life sentence based on witness statements. Koçak was sentenced to aggravated life imprisonment for "violation of the Constitution" based on witness statements and started a hunger strike for his right to a fair trial. Later on, he turned the hunger strike into a death fast. He died on day 279 weighing 29 kg in Izmir Şakran Prison on 24 April 2020.

Abdullah Öcalan has been imprisoned on İmralı Island in the Sea of Marmara since February 1999. He is serving a life sentence for violating article 125 of the Turkish Penal Code. Initially he was sentenced to death but the conviction was commuted to a life sentence in October 2002. Abdullah Öcalan's imprisonment and the detention conditions are an issue that constantly causes constraints in the Turkish-Kurdish political sphere which has also an influence on the relations between Turkey and international organizations.
