The nation returned to the Summer Games after participating in the African boycott of the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal and the American-led boycott of the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow. However, Egypt did not participate in the Soviet-led boycott. 114 competitors, 108 men and 6 women, took part in 74 events in 15 sports.

Two Egyptian weightlifters were awarded medals retroactively, after higher-ranked competitors were disqualified for doping: Abeer Abdelrahman took silver in the women's 75 kg event, while Tarek Yehia, received bronze in the men's 85 kg event. Among other achievements, Mostafa Mansour was the nation's first competitor in sprint canoeing while fencer Shaimaa El-Gammal became the first Egyptian female to appear in four editions of the Olympics.

He placed fifth at the 2012 Summer Olympics with a clean and jerk of 192 kg, and a snatch of 155 kg, giving a total of 347 kg. He finished in 9th in the same division at the 2016 Summer Olympics, with a snatch of 152 kg and a clean and jerk of 196 kg, giving a total of 338 kg.

Nahla Ramadan Mohamed is an Egyptian weightlifter and the pioneer of weightlifting in Egypt, Africa and the Arab world. She competed for Egypt at the 2004 Summer Olympics and 2012 Summer Olympics. At the 2004 Summer Olympics, competing in the heavyweight division, she did not finish the competition, being unable to register a lift in the clean and jerk. At the 2012 Summer Olympics, she competed in the super-heavyweight category and finished fifth.
