Eternal Nightcap is the third studio album by Australian rock band The Whitlams, first released by Black Yak Phantom in 1997.

Music

Eternal Nightcap includes typical rock songs ("Where's the Enemy"), piano ballads ("No Aphrodisiac", the "Charlie" trio), classic pop tunes ("Melbourne", "Laugh in Their Faces"), and even a Bob Dylan cover version ("Tangled Up in Blue").

Releases

A limited edition vinyl LP of Eternal Nightcap was released in 2006, with only 500 copies being pressed. Notably, "Love is Everywhere" and "Tangled Up in Blue" were left off this version of the album.

New Zealand

Eternal Nightcap – New Zealand Release was the first album released by The Whitlams specifically for a country other than Australia. Eternal Nightcap – New Zealand Release contained 17 tracks selected from the band's first three studio albums: Introducing The Whitlams, Undeniably The Whitlams and Eternal Nightcap. The album was released by Black Yak Phantom in 1999, and includes many former singles and B-sides from the first three albums including "You Sound Like Louis Burdett", "No Aphrodisiac", "Charlie" Nos. 1–3, "Melbourne" and "Following My Own Tracks".

Canadian

Eternal Nightcap – Canadian Release was the second album released by The Whitlams specifically for a country other than Australia. Eternal Nightcap – Canadian Release contains 13 tracks selected from two of their studio albums, Eternal Nightcap and Undeniably The Whitlams – Reworked. This album was released by Black Yak Phantom/Warner Music Canada in 2000, coinciding with The Whitlams Canadian tour supporting Blue Rodeo .

It consists mostly of tracks from the Australian release of Eternal Nightcap, along with some 4-tracks from Undeniably The Whitlams - Reworked, and the track "1999", a remix of the track "1995" which was first released on Undeniably The Whitlams. "1999" was also released on the FOW Exclusive CD, available only to members of the Friends of The Whitlams, the band's official fanclub.

Critics praised the band's unique pop – rock style as an impressive step up from their last album, Undeniably The Whitlams. The album not only achieved critical acclaim but also commercial success as it became the biggest selling independent album in Australian history. On 3 December 2006, it was announced that Eternal Nightcap was voted number 27 in ABC's list, Australia's Favourite Album. [2] Eternal Nightcap was also placed at number 17 in the Triple J Hottest 100 Australian Albums of All Time, 2011.

Promotion

On 6 August 2009, The Whitlams played Eternal Nightcap in its entirety for the first time, with the exclusion of "Tangled up in Blue", at the Karova Lounge in Ballarat. In August 2009, they played the entire album in full before moving on to various other hits, first at The Corner Hotel in Victoria and then at the Tivoli in Brisbane.

The Whitlams Australian rock band

The Whitlams are an Australian indie rock band formed in late 1992. The original line-up was Tim Freedman on keyboards and lead vocals, Andy Lewis on double bass and Stevie Plunder on guitar. Other than mainstay, Freedman, the line-up has changed numerous times. Since 2001 he has been joined by Warwick Hornby on bass guitar, Jak Housden on guitar and Terepai Richmond on drums. Four of their studio albums have reached the ARIA Albums Chart top 20: Eternal Nightcap, Love This City, Torch the Moon and Little Cloud. Their highest charting singles are "Blow Up the Pokies" and "Fall for You" – both reached number 21. The group's single, "No Aphrodisiac" was listed at number one on the Triple J Hottest 100, 1997 by listeners of national radio station, Triple J. In January 1996 Stevie Plunder was found dead at the base of Wentworth Falls. Andy Lewis committed suicide in February 2000.

Def FX was an Australian band created by Sean Lowry (keyboards) in 1990 and included Fiona Horne on lead vocals, Blake Gardiner on guitar and Martyn Basha on bass - the band had no drummer. They released four albums, Light Speed Collision, Baptism, Ritual Eternal, Majick before disbanding in April 1997. For United States releases and touring they used Definition FX as their band name to avoid confusion with similarly named groups.

No Aphrodisiac single by The Whitlams

"No Aphrodisiac" is the third single by Australian rock group the Whitlams, from their third album, Eternal Nightcap. It was released as a CD maxi, with three B-sides and a remix version of the lead track, on 14 December 1997 and peaked at No. 59 on the Australian Singles Chart. The lead track was written by the band's founding mainstay, Tim Freedman, together with Pinky Beecroft and Chit Chat Von Loopin Stab : both from the band, Machine Gun Fellatio. It was produced by Freedman with Rob Taylor. "No Aphrodisiac" won Song of the Year at the ARIA Music Awards of 1998.

'The Whitlams & the Sydney Symphony Live in Concert' is a 2008 release by The Whitlams. The album was recorded with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra at the Sydney Opera House 20–22 September 2007. 700,000 copies were made available in the Sunday Telegraph on 1 June 2008, at the time the first non-compilation album to be given away free with a newspaper in Australia.

pre.shrunk were an Australian rock band, which formed in March 1996 with two bass guitarists, Dave Morris and David "Davarj"/"Davage" Thomas, and a drummer, Justin Dwyer. At the ARIA Music Awards of 1999 they were nominated in the Best Independent Release category for their single, "Triple A Side" (1998). In 2001 they were nominated in the same category for their debut album, Digital Sunset (2000). Thomas left in 2003 and the group continued until late the following year as a duo.

"Melbourne" is the second single by The Whitlams from their breakthrough album, Eternal Nightcap. It was released on 27 January 1998. The song peaked at #70 on the Australian ARIA singles chart. It was also included on The Whitlams' best-of album, Truth, Beauty and a Picture of You. A music video edit of this song is shorter and features more strings. This mix was included on the compilation album. "Melbourne" was performed live with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra in September 2007. On the single, an earlier version of the song, "400 Miles from Darwin", was included, which was later re-recorded for their 1999 album, Love This City. The demo was also included on the 2002 limited edition album, Rarities: 1992–2003.

"You Sound Like Louis Burdett" is the lead single by The Whitlams from their 3rd album, Eternal Nightcap. It was released on January 11, 1997 and did not chart. It was included on The Whitlams compilation album, Truth, Beauty and a Picture of You. The single was placed at number 53 of Triple J's Hottest 100 of that year.

The 12th Australian Recording Industry Association Music Awards was held on 20 October 1998 at the Sydney Convention & Exhibition Centre. Presenters, including Democrats deputy leader Natasha Stott Despoja and former Prime Minister Gough Whitlam, distributed 29 awards with the big winner for the year being Natalie Imbruglia with six awards.

Bernie Hayes is an Australian singer/songwriter who has released four albums as a solo artist and written songs for other Australian artists notably "You Made Me Hard" which was the third single from The Whitlams Love This City album.

Greta Gertler is a pianist, singer, and songwriter. She is originally from Sydney, Australia, and got her start there as a songwriter, penning hits for other artists. She is co-leader of orchestral pop collective, The Universal Thump, with Adam D Gold.
