The Eugene City Hall, also known as the Civic Center, was the city hall of Eugene, Oregon, United States, the second-largest city in Oregon, from 1964 to 2012. It was a mid-century modern, single-story structure with a central plaza and underground parking. It was opened in 1964, closed in 2012, [1] and demolished in 2014–15. In 2024, Eugene moved the city hall to Eugene Water and Electric Board's (EWEB) former Headquarters. [2]

The building was the result of a national design contest that included 25 entries, later narrowed to four, and awarded to Stafford, Morin, and Longwood of Eugene and Portland in 1961. Site work began in early 1962. [3] The building opened in 1964. [4] The building and its landscaped plaza were immediately praised as low-key, open designs that welcomed public participation in government. In 1965, it was awarded a citation for excellence in community architecture by the Southwest Oregon chapter of the American Institute of Architects.
As Eugene grew in population and as building codes changed, it became apparent that City Hall did not meet the needs of local government. The 84,000-square-foot (7,800 m2) building had become too small to house the many government departments and personnel, and city planners acquired office space in various nearby locations. City Hall relied upon steam heat, and when EWEB announced that it would no longer supply steam to downtown Eugene, the building's energy inefficiencies became obvious. Most troublesome to engineers, however, was that the building would not be structurally sound in an earthquake [1] and could collapse into the lower-level parking area. Gradually, all city offices were moved, and the building was abandoned in 2012.
An ongoing discussion began in the late 1990s about whether to demolish City Hall or to remodel it, and should City Hall remain on its present site or move. [5] [6] A 2007 City Hall Complex Master Plan identified a timeline that included Phase Four Design and Construction of a new building by 2011. Police were relocated outside of downtown, but no action was taken on City Hall. [7]
In January 2013, the Eugene City Council voted to construct a new city hall rather than renovate the existing building. [8] The old building was razed in 2014–15, [1] [9] following the adoption of plans to construct a new 25,000-square-foot (2,300 m2) in its place. Demolition began in September 2014 [10] and was completed around June 2015. [11]
In 2014, the cost of a replacement building was budgeted at $15 million and its opening was expected in fall 2016, [12] but by mid-2016 the estimated cost had grown to $18.2 million (or nearly $28 million for the entire project, including demolition of the old city hall), and had not yet received city council approval. [13] The long-term plan included a potential second phase with construction of another building on the site that would bring the total size to 100,000 square feet (9,300 m2). [14]
In 2019, the site of the former Eugene City Hall was sold to Lane County, designated as the potential location for a new county courthouse. Initially converted into a temporary paid parking lot at the start of 2019, the arrangement was intended to last for 18 months. [15] However, a bond measure intended to fund the new courthouse failed, with 58% of voters opposing it compared to 41% in favor. [16] Consequently, the site has continued to function as a paid parking lot.

The Hillsboro Civic Center is a government-built, mixed-use development in downtown Hillsboro, Oregon, United States. The development includes the city hall for the county seat of Washington County, located west of Portland, Oregon. Covering 6 acres (24,000 m2), the Civic Center has a total of over 165,000 square feet (15,300 m2) in the complex. The total of six stories for the main structure makes the building the tallest in the city, tied with Tuality Community Hospital. In addition to government offices, the Civic Center includes retail space, public plazas, and residential housing. The complex was built to centralize city government functions under one roof.
The Shoppes at Gateway, formerly Gateway Mall, is a shopping center located in Springfield, Oregon, United States owned and managed by Balboa Retail Properties. The Wayne Lyman Morse United States Courthouse is a federal courthouse located in Eugene, Oregon. Completed in 2006, it serves the District of Oregon as part of the Ninth Judicial Circuit. Camp Adair was a United States Army division training facility established north of Corvallis, Oregon, operating from 1942 to 1946. During its peak period of use, the camp was home to approximately 40,000 persons — enough to have constituted the second largest city in the state of Oregon. The camp was largely scrapped as government surplus following termination of World War II, with a portion of the site reconstituted as "Adair Air Force Station" in 1957.

The Eugene Mall was a car-free zone in the heart of Eugene, Oregon, United States, designed to encourage pedestrian access to shopping and entertainment areas. Dedicated on February 13, 1971, the mall opened amid three days of fanfare and dreams of a revitalized downtown. Conflict over the scope and use of the mall began immediately and continued for 30 years until the last remaining parts of the mall were opened to automobile traffic. At that time, a former Eugene mayor commented that the city's dreams for a bright future just hadn't worked. Many residents, however, shared the much-earlier view of a former downtown merchant, that Eugene had sustained more damage from the mall than it would have from a natural disaster.

The Hayden RR Bridge, is a truss bridge located in Springfield, Oregon, spanning over the McKenzie River. It initially served as a traditional railroad bridge, starting as part of the first transcontinental railroad in Utah, before moving to its current location as part of the Marcola line, whose primary use was the distribution of lumber. It later closed alongside the area's lumber mills, and became a pedestrian bridge in 2019. It is one of the few remaining wrought-iron, Phoenixville bridges still standing, and the oldest intact bridge in the state of Oregon.
