FC Germania Helsinki (FCGH) is a sports club from Greater Helsinki, Finland, playing association football.

History

The club was formed by German-speaking immigrants in 2015 [1] [2] and formally established in 2017. [3] It has been a Registered association and member of the Football Association of Finland since 2018. [4] [5] FC Germania is listed among the official German institutions in Finland. [6] The sports club has about 60 members, [7] among them many immigrants from the German speaking area and Finns with family ties to Germany, Austria or Switzerland. [8]

Germania's first men's team plays in Vitonen. [9] The second men's team, called FC Germania/Akademie, plays in Kutonen [10] and there is another men's team, called FC Germania Hki 2015, playing in Helsinki's hobby league. [11] A youth section was established in 2021 with a mixed team at preschool age training at the German School Helsinki. [12] During the winter saison 2018–19 even a women's team, called FCGH Ladies, was playing. [13] [14]

The Club Chairman is the lawyer Tim Becker, who was born in the former GDR and has been living in Vantaa since 2007. [15] [16] The German professional player Thomas Dähne, who won both the Finnish League and Finnish League Cup in 2017, has been an honorary member since the club's foundation. [17] [18]

Tomi Matti Mäkelä is a Finnish musicologist and pianist, professor at the Martin-Luther-Universität Halle-Wittenberg in Germany. He studied music and musicology in Lahti, Vienna, Berlin (West) and Helsinki. As a pianist he studied with Rauno Jussila and Noel Flores. He got his doctoral degree 1988 in Berlin under the guidance of Carl Dahlhaus. He has published widely on the music of the nineteenth and twentieth century. His German book on Sibelius Poesie in der Luft got the award Geisteswissenschaft international 2008 and was published in English translation by Steven Lindberg as Jean Sibelius (2011). 2023 Tomi Mäkelä received the Fredrik-Pacius-Award of the Swedish Literature Society in Finland.
