Faculty of Dental Sciences, University of Peradeniya is one of the nine faculties [1] of University of Peradeniya and the only institution that offers five years undergraduate programme for dental surgeons in Sri Lanka. It conducts both undergraduate programs (Degree of Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS)) and postgraduate programs. [2]

The only dental teaching hospital in Sri Lanka, the Peradeniya Dental (Teaching) Hospital functions as the clinical unit of the faculty. the Dental School of the University of Ceylon was established in 1943. It was moved from Colombo to Augusta Hill, Peradeniya in 1954. In 1974, Dental Schools was amalgamated into the Faculty of Medical, Dental & Veterinary Sciences of the Peradeniya Campus. This has since been reversed and the Faculty of Dental Sciences now functions independently. The teaching hospital was declared open and integrated to the faculty in 1998 as a Rs. 1.2 billion project.

The Melbourne Dental School is one of the graduate schools of the University of Melbourne. In addition to the 4-year graduate dental program the Doctor of Dental Surgery, the school offers specialty training programs combined with the Doctor of Clinical Dentistry degree, advanced training programs, and research degrees including M.Sc. and Ph.D. programs. According to the QS World Rankings, it is the highest ranking dental school in Australia and often ranks among the top 25 in the world.

After serving as a Consultant Clinical Microbiologist in Glasgow, UK he joined the academia. Since then, working in five different trans-continental universities, he has authored over 450 scientific communications, cited over 27,000 occasions ). Subsequently, he served over 12 years as the Executive Dean of two major dental schools in Hong Kong, and Australia at the University of Hong Kong and University of Queensland, respectively. He has received numerous accolades for his contributions to dentistry, including the King James IV Professorship of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, UK, and the Distinguished Scientist Award of IADR, USA. He holds many visiting/honorary professor appointments in the universities of Thailand, Australia, Indonesia, the UK, the Middle East, and China.
