Fahad Ahmad is an Indian student leader and social activist who served as the General Secretary of the Tata Institute of Social Science Student's Union. In July 2022, he joined Samajwadi Party in the presence of Abu Azmi and Rais Shaikh. [2] [3] [4] He became President of the Samajwadi Party of Maharashtra and Mumbai.[ when? ]

Early life and education

Fahad Ahmad was born in Baheri. [5]

Activism

During his tenure as the general secretary of the TISS Student Union in 2017–2018, Ahmad led a protest against the rolling back of the fee waiver for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and other backward class students, accompanied by over 1000 students. Prakash Ambedkar also supported students in this matter. [16]

Ahmad participated in Anti-CAA protests in Mumbai and attended several rallies across India. [17] [18] [19] He was a part of the Wankhede silent protest during India vs. Australia ODI series. [20] [21] He stated against Citizenship Amendment Act, calling it unconstitutional. [22] [23] In December 2019, he led the August Kranti Maidan protest. [24] [25] [26]

Ahmad, with more than 100 volunteers, distributed food kits across eight centers in Mumbai slums. [27] Every Saturday evening, they provided food packets to 210 families. [28] The group also distributed around 100 sanitizers worth 10,000₹(120$) to on-duty police personnel which they highly promoted in their campaigns. [29]

Controversies

Tata Institute of Social Sciences denied students for clearance after Ahmad refused to accept an MPhil degree from the chairperson of the university S. Ramadorai during the convocation ceremony. [36]

Tata Institute of Social Sciences denied Ahmad registration into the Ph.D. program after he refused to receive his M.Phil. Degree. [37] [35] Tata Institute then gave an order that described Ahmad's action as an insult to the university. [38] [39] [40]

Personal life

On 16 February 2023, Ahmad married Bollywood actress Swara Bhasker. [41] The marriage was criticised by Islamic scholar Yasir Nadeem al Wajidi who called it "legal but not accepted in Islam". This created a Twitter battle between the scholar and RJ Sayema. [42]

It, along with the Pride Week, is organized by Queer Azaadi Mumbai, a collective of organizations and individuals working for the rights of LGBTQIA community. The participants of the march include people from the LGBTQIH community as well their "straight allies", from India and outside. In addition to being a celebration of queer pride, the pride march and related events are a platform to ask for equal rights.

Fake news in India refers to misinformation or disinformation in the country which is spread through word of mouth and traditional media and more recently through digital forms of communication such as edited videos, memes, unverified advertisements and social media propagated rumours. Fake news spread through social media in the country has become a serious problem, with the potential of it resulting in mob violence, as was the case where at least 20 people were killed in 2018 as a result of misinformation circulated on social media.

#MenToo is a social movement in India which was started against false sexual harassment allegations in MeToo movement in India. The movement was widely spread out after Bollywood actress Pooja Bedi and Founder of Purush Aayog Barkha Trehan appealed to bring gender neutral laws and investigation, after actor Karan Oberoi was arrested on 5 May 2019 due to a sexual harassment complaint filed against him by his ex-girlfriend.

The Citizenship Amendment Act (Bill) protests, also known as the CAA Protest, CAB Protest or CAA and NRC protests, occurred after the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) was enacted by the Government of India on 12 December 2019. The move sparked a widespread national and overseas ongoing protests against the act and its associated proposals of the National Register of Citizens (NRC). The protests first began in Assam and spread swiftly in other states such as Delhi, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, and Tripura on 4 December 2019. Protests broke out rapidly across the country, although the concerns of the protesters vary.
