Farouk Omar Hussein Fawzi al-Anzi is an Iraqi historian,thinker,and Diplomat. [1] He specializes in Islamic history and has contributed articles to major reference works including the Encyclopedia Britannica and the Encyclopedia of Islam .
Farouk Omar,whose doctoral thesis on the Abbasid Caliphate was examined by prominent scholars Bernard Lewis and Montgomery Watt,who acknowledged that his research overturned many old Orientalist concepts about the early Abbasid period. He has been recognized in the International Biographical Dictionary (B.I.D) for Distinguished Service to the Community. [2]
Farouk Omar Hussein Fawzi (1938,Mosul - ) is an Iraqi historian and intellectual. He was born in Mosul,where he completed his primary and secondary education before moving to Baghdad to study at the University of Baghdad,where he obtained his BA with honors in History in 1961. This academic distinction qualified him for an official scholarship to pursue doctoral studies in Islamic History at the University of London in Britain,where he completed his PhD in 1967.Upon his return,he became a lecturer at the College of Arts,History Department at the University of Baghdad,and received the rank of Professor in 1979. He served as head of the History Department from 1978-1980 and as an ambassador at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1976. Over the years,he held various academic and administrative positions and lectured at Arab and international universities. He worked at Al al-Bayt University in Jordan for several years,where he became head of the History Department and director of the Ottoman Studies Unit. He currently works at Sultan Qaboos University in the Sultanate of Oman.He emigrated from Iraq in 1999 and is a member of the Royal Asiatic Society in London. He has contributed to several major reference works including the Encyclopedia of Islam,Encyclopedia Britannica,UNESCO's "History of Humanity," the "History of the Arab Nation" for the Arab Organization for Education,Culture and Sciences,and the Palestinian Encyclopedia published in Damascus under the supervision of the Palestine Liberation Organization. Historian Hichem Djait answered a question about what Arabs achieved in the twentieth century,saying:"The only achievement is in the field of Arab historical studies and research,and in this field we find only a small number of good historians,including Abd al-Aziz al-Duri and Salih Ahmad al-Ali,followed by Farouk Omar Fawzi. The writings of these historians,all of whom are Iraqi,are almost the only ones in all Arab production in the field of human sciences that are internationally recognized as serious research mastering their material." Farouk umar, An Arab historian from Iraq, born in Mosul and educated there until the end of high school. He then moved to Baghdad to study at its university, where he obtained a BA (Honors) in History. This rank qualified him for an official scholarship to study for a doctorate in Islamic history at the University of London in Britain. He then returned to lecture at the College of Arts / Department of History at the University of Baghdad. The author obtained the rank of professor from the University of Baghdad and was awarded membership in the Royal Asiatic Society in London. He has numerous publications, translated some books into Arabic, and contributed several articles to the Encyclopedia of Islam, the Encyclopedia Britannica, the reference book (History of Humanity) of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the reference book (History of the Arab Nation) of the Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (ALECSO) of the Arab League, and the Palestinian Encyclopedia published in Damascus under the supervision of the Palestine Liberation Organization.
هو المؤرخ والمفكر العراقي فاروق عمر حسين فوزي، من مواليد الموصل في السادس من حزيران1356هـ/ 1938م، من أسرة عسكرية متوسطة الحال وأغلب أهله ضباطا في الجيش العراقي. ما أورثه عنها الحرص والجدية والانضباط والنزاهة في العمل. درس الدكتور فاروق مرحلة الابتدائي والإعدادي والثانوي والجامعية بين الموصل وبغداد على يد أساتذة متميزين جعلوا منه الطالب المتفوق المرشح للبعثة العلمية خارج العراق بعدما سُجل على لوحة الشرف في كلية التربية قسم التاريخ بجامعة بغداد ضمن الدفعة التي تخرجت فيها عام1377هـ /1958م. ويذكر أن الدكتور فاروق تتلمذ خلال مرحلة البكالوريوس على أساتذة مبرزين أكفاء من أمثال: الدكتور زكي صالح (أستاذ التاريخ الحديث)، والأستاذ الدكتور محمد الهاشمي (أستاذ التاريخ الإسلامي) والدكتور فاضل حسين (أستاذ تاريخ الشرق الأدنى الحديث)، والاستاذ الدكتور عبد القادر أحمد اليوسف (أستاذ العصور الوسطى الأوروبية). وبعد تخرجه من قسم التاريخ، تعين الدكتور فاروق في دار المعلمين الابتدائية في بعقوبة بمحافظة ديالى القريبة من بغداد، وبعد سنتين سافر إلى إنجلترا والتحق بمدرسة الدراسات الشرقية والإفريقية بجامعة لندن لنيل شهادة الدكتوراه في التاريخ الإسلامي، ودرس اللغة الإنجليزية وأتقنها واجتاز امتحان الكفاءة العلمية في عدد من المقررات التاريخية، ثم تم تسجيله كطالب ماجستير، وبدأ جمع المادة التاريخية في الموضوع الذي اختاره حول "الدعوة العباسية"، وبعد كتابة فصلين من الرسالة بمستوى جيد قرر مجلس القسم بعد اطلاعه على تقرير الأستاذ المشرف نقل التسجيل من الماجستير إلى الدكتوراه. ويعترف الدكتور فاروق أن لأساتذته في جامعة لندن الفضل في تمرسه بقواعد المنهج العلمي وأصول البحث التاريخي، مما يجعله يتخرج بامتياز عن موضوعه في الدكتوراه حول (الخلافة العباسية 170-132هـ) عام1386هـ /1967م، وقد ضمت لجنة المناقشة أساتذة كبارا مشهورين في التخصص منهم: البروفيسور برنارد لويس، والبروفيسور منتغمري وات. واعترفوا أن رسالته قلبت كثيرا من مفاهيم الاستشراق القديم عن العصر العباسي الأول وخاصة في ما يتعلق بطبيعة الدعوة العباسية وأبعادها. وبعد رجوعه إلى العراق عُين مدرسا بكلية الآداب جامعة بغداد، ونال مرتبة الأستاذية في التاريخ الإسلامي من جامعة بغداد عام1399هـ /1979م، وتدرج في مناصب إدارية علمية منها: مدير الدراسات الاجتماعية في وزارة التعليم العالي والبحث العلمي، ثم رئيسا لقسم التاريخ في كلية الاداب بجامعة بغداد، ثم مشرفا على دار الحكمة والنشر والتأليف بجامعة بغداد، ثم رئيسا لقسم التاريخ في كلية الآداب ببغداد للمرة الثانية، ثم رئيسا لقسم التاريخ بجامعة آل البيت في الأردن، ومديرا لوحدة الدراسات العثمانية في الجامعة نفسها. وقد أعيرت خدمات الدكتور فاروق إلى جامعات عديدة منها: جامعة الرياض، وجامعة الإمارات العربية المتحدة، وجامعة لانكستر بإنجلترا، والجامعة الليبية، وجامعة آل البيت بالأردن، وجامعة السلطان قابوس في سلطنة عمان. كما ظهر اسم الدكتور فاروق في الجزء 14 من (القاموس الدولي للتراجم) B.I.D وذلك للخدمات المتميزة التي قدمها للمجتمع (For Distinguished Service to the Community)[He is the Iraqi historian and intellectual Farouk Omar Hussein Fawzi, born in Mosul on June 6, 1356 AH/1938 CE, from a middle-class military family where most of his relatives were officers in the Iraqi Army. This background instilled in him diligence, seriousness, discipline, and integrity in work. Dr. Farouk studied primary, preparatory, secondary, and university education between Mosul and Baghdad under distinguished professors who made him an excellent student nominated for a scientific mission outside Iraq after being registered on the honor roll at the College of Education, History Department at the University of Baghdad within the cohort that graduated in 1377 AH/1958 CE. It is mentioned that Dr. Farouk studied during his bachelor's degree under distinguished competent professors such as: Dr. Zaki Salih (Professor of Modern History), Professor Dr. Muhammad al-Hashimi (Professor of Islamic History), Dr. Fadil Hussein (Professor of Modern Near East History), and Professor Dr. Abdul Qadir Ahmad al-Yusuf (Professor of European Medieval Ages). After graduating from the History Department, Dr. Farouk was appointed at the Elementary Teachers' College in Baqubah in Diyala Province near Baghdad, and after two years he traveled to England and joined the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London to obtain a PhD in Islamic History. He studied English and mastered it, passed the scientific competency exam in a number of historical courses, then was registered as a master's student, and began collecting historical material on the topic he chose about "The Abbasid Call." After writing two chapters of the thesis at a good level, the department council decided after reviewing the supervisor's report to transfer the registration from master's to doctorate. Dr. Farouk acknowledges that his professors at the University of London deserve credit for his mastery of scientific methodology rules and principles of historical research, which enabled him to graduate with distinction on his doctoral topic about (The Abbasid Caliphate 132-170 AH) in 1386 AH/1967 CE. The examination committee included major famous professors in the specialization including: Professor Bernard Lewis and Professor Montgomery Watt. They acknowledged that his thesis overturned many concepts of old Orientalism about the early Abbasid period, especially regarding the nature of the Abbasid call and its dimensions. After his return to Iraq, he was appointed as a teacher at the College of Arts, University of Baghdad, and obtained the rank of professor in Islamic History from the University of Baghdad in 1399 AH/1979 CE. He progressed through scientific administrative positions including: Director of Social Studies at the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, then head of the History Department at the College of Arts at the University of Baghdad, then supervisor of Dar al-Hikma for Publishing and Authoring at the University of Baghdad, then head of the History Department at the College of Arts in Baghdad for the second time, then head of the History Department at Al al-Bayt University in Jordan, and director of the Ottoman Studies Unit at the same university. Dr. Farouk's services were loaned to numerous universities including: University of Riyadh, United Arab Emirates University, Lancaster University in England, Libyan University, Al al-Bayt University in Jordan, and Sultan Qaboos University in the Sultanate of Oman.
