Feast of Hammers is the second studio album by English progressive rock band Birdeatsbaby, first released on 20 February 2012, [1] [2] through the band's own label, Dead Round Eyes. [3]
In February 2011, while on their first American tour, the band worked music producer Jason Rubal, recording the album at his studio, Seventh Wave, in Pennsylvania. The album was recorded over three weeks. [4] [5]
Prior to the release of the album, the band released three music videos, all directed by Dominic Stoate and Tom Marcham, and published on the official Birdeatsbaby Youtube channel. In April 2011, a music video for the song "Through Ten Walls", additionally directed by Kelly Marriot, and featuring the band playing in a dimly lit, cramped and crumbling basement, was released. [6]
On 14 October of that year, the band released a music video for the song "Feast of Hammers." [7] Inspired by the horror films The Hills Have Eyes and The Wickerman , the video portrays Mishkin Fitzgerald and the rest of the band being taken captive in the woods by a group of strange, masked people. One by one, the band has plastic bags put over their heads, their heads smashed with hammers, and their brains eaten. Both a "censored version" and a more graphic "explicit version" of the video were released, as well as an "alternate ending" where Fitzgerald, having escaped, runs out of the forest.
On 3 February 2012, a third music video was released, this time for the song "Incitatus". [8] This video features Fitzgerald as a patient in an asylum with Keely McDonald as an evil nurse, and took stylistic inspirations from the film Gothika . [2] The track was also released as a single, with a remix by Avon Bosco as a B-side, on February 6.
On 16 January 2012, the band was featured on the BBC Radio 6 Music program BBC Introducing with Tom Robinson. [9]
In April 2012, it was announced that drummer Charlie Reith-Pert was leaving the band, and on May 8 the band announced that percussionist Katha Rothe would be joining them for the Feast of Hammers tour, with dates in the UK, Europe, and the USA. [10]
After the album's release, a further two music videos for songs from the album, "Anchor" and "The Sailor's Wife", were released 20 May and 16 July 2012 respectively. The latter was directed by former Birdeatsbaby drummer Philippa Bloomfield. [11] "Anchor" was released as a single with the song "Hanging Tree" as a B-side on 23 May 2012. [12]
Many of the songs reference water, the sea, or nautical themes, as is reflected in the album's packaging.
Fitzgerald stated in an interview that the song "Through Ten Walls" was written about her experience being sexually assaulted as a teenager. She said, "The guy then moved in down my street, just a stone’s throw away from my house, that’s when I wrote, “Through Ten Walls”. Many of my songs are based around experience, I couldn’t help but use it at[ sic ] a subject matter as that kind of trauma can consume you and if you don’t get it out, then it can destroy you."" [13]
The album received generally positive reviews. Simon Price of The Independent said the album "carries heavy reverberations of the Dresden Dolls," but also that it "has an operatic quality which elevates it above mere pastiche", [14] and also gave the album an honorable mention in his review of "The best music of 2012". [15] Ben Graham of the Quietus described Fitzgerald's vocals as "softly seductive yet fiercely demanding you keep your distance, shifting suddenly from a whispery falsetto to a deep menacing growl". [3] A review in Jason's Jukebox heralded the band as "the real deal", and praised Rubal's production, calling it "a clean production style, allowing each instrument to be heard clearly – which is a very effective style for this music." [16] Joachim Brookes of the German publication Rock Times called the album "captivating" and noted its "drama" and "apocalyptic mood", praising Fitzgerald as a "brilliant composer and pianist" as well as her "colleagues who are able to act on an equal footing." [17]

Formed in Orlando, Florida in 1999, the group's first recording lineup included vocalist and guitarist Matt Heafy, bassist Brent Young and drummer Travis Smith, who together released Ember to Inferno on Lifeforce Records in 2003. After the addition of guitarist Corey Beaulieu and new bassist Paolo Gregoletto in place of Young, the band signed with Roadrunner Records and released Ascendancy in 2005, which reached number 151 on the US Billboard 200. It also reached number 79 on the UK Albums Chart and was certified gold by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI). Whitechapel is an American deathcore band from Knoxville, Tennessee. The band is named after the Whitechapel district in East London, England, where Jack the Ripper committed a series of murders. The group comprises vocalist Phil Bozeman, guitarists Ben Savage, Alex Wade, and Zach Householder, bassist Gabe Crisp and drummer Brandon Zackey. Founded in 2006 by Bozeman and Savage, the band has released eight studio albums and fourteen music videos, and it's currently signed to Metal Blade Records. Whitechapel's 2010 album A New Era of Corruption, sold around 10,600 copies in the United States in its first week of release and debuted at position No. 43 on the Billboard 200 chart. The band's self-titled fourth album was released in 2012 and debuted at No. 47 on the Billboard 200, selling roughly 9,200 copies in its first week. In 2014 the band released their fifth full-length album, Our Endless War to generally positive reviews. The album sold roughly 16,000 copies in its first week and debuted at No. 10 on the Billboard 200. They released their sixth full-length album Mark of the Blade in 2016 to greater critical acclaim, selling roughly 8,000 copies in the first week of its release. In 2019, Whitechapel released their seventh album, The Valley, which debuted at No. 143 on the Billboard 200 also to critical acclaim. Their newest album, Kin, was released on October 29, 2021.
While She Sleeps are a British metalcore band from Sheffield. Formed in 2006, the group consists of vocalist Lawrence Taylor, guitarists Sean Long and Mat Welsh, bassist Aaran McKenzie and drummer Adam Savage. They are currently signed to their own label Sleeps Brothers in the UK and in collaboration with Spinefarm Records in the US and UNFD in Australia. They have released three EPs, And This Is Just the Start, Split and The North Stands for Nothing, and six studio albums, This Is the Six, Brainwashed, You Are We, So What?, Sleeps Society and Self Hell. They received the Best British Newcomer award at the Kerrang! Awards 2012. The group has maintained the same line-up since its formation, with vocalist Taylor being the only bandmate who is not an original member. Despite this, he has still appeared on every release apart from the group's first two EPs.

Birdeatsbaby is an English progressive rock band from Brighton, United Kingdom, formed in 2008. At their start, the band's music was considered to be within the dark cabaret genre, but later began to incorporate aspects of heavy metal, klezmer and other musical styles. Their music is noted for its orchestral elements, complex rhythms and exotic instrumentation, with lyrics referencing themes such as religion, alienation, sexual orientation, obsession and animal rights. According to group members, their influences include Chopin, Mozart, Debussy, Queen, Muse and Nick Cave. Since the release of their 2016 album Tanta Furia, their influences have also come from progressive metal artists such as Tool and Opeth.
