The Federal College of Education (Technical), Umunze is a Nigerian Technical Tertiary Institution [4] [5] located in Umunze, Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State, Nigeria. It is affiliated to Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka for its degree programmes. [6]

History

Federal College of Education (Technical), Umunze was established by Decree No. 4 of 14 March 1986 and fully started its operation in November 1989. [7] The Late Igwe of Umunze, Mathias Ugochukwu and the Igwe of Azia, Prof. T. I. Eze, are the pioneers of the College. Prof. T. I. Eze was the first Provost of the College who played a huge role in the establishment of the institution. At the beginning of the institution's operation, the college inherited buildings from All Saints Anglican Secondary School, Umunze and started with only 70 Students ( 23 males and 47 females). The college, currently awards PRE-NCE, NCE (Regular, CEP and Sandwich), Degree (Regular, CEP and Sandwich) and Post Graduate Diploma in Education certificates. [3] [6]

The college currently has a population of about 6,000 for the NCE programme, 1,200 in Degree and 455 students in Post Graduate Diploma in Education. [3]

The institution engage students to the practical aspects of what they learn in the classrooms through the SIWES programme. [10] it also avails students the opportunity to practice and learn teaching skills through Teaching Practice Programmes.

The institution through its affiliation with Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka [11] offers programmes leading to the award of Bachelors in Education (Bed) in the following areas; [12]

The college Library

The College Library is staffed or headed by the College Librarian who is also a member of the college management. The Pioneer College Librarian was Mr. Nzelum, Augustine. who later handed over to Dr. Alphonsus A. Ugwuanyi in 2011. Dr Ugwuanyi headed the library for 10 years (2011- 2021), after which he handed over to Dr. Agada Samson Arome in December 2021. The College Library is also known as "Prof. Ben Nwabueze Library". The college library starts its operation in May 1990 and is situated at the College's main campus. With an online integrated capacity of roughly 10 million books and journals, it offers a Virtual Library part powered by e-granary. [13]

The Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) is a university in Nigeria that was founded as Anambra State University of Technology (ASUTECH) on 30 July 1980, by the Executive Governor of Anambra State, Chief Dr Jim Ifeanyichukwu Nwobodo. The creation of Enugu State out of Anambra State in 1991 by the then Military President General Ibrahim Gbadamasi Babangida, transformed ASUTECH into Enugu State University of Science and Technology.

Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, also called UNIZIK or NAU in short is a federal university in Nigeria. It consists of two campuses in Anambra State. Its main campus is in Awka, while its other campus is in Nnewi. There are also other campuses of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka. These include Agulu in Aniocha local government area and Ifite-Ogwuari in Ayamelum local government area in Anambra State. This makes Nnamdi Azikiwe University to operate in the three Senatorial Districts in Anambra State, Nigeria having Awka campus, in Anambra Central Senatorial District, Nnewi in Anambra North Senatorial District and Ifite-Ogwuari in Anambra North Senatorial District, respectively.

Awka'Awka South Local Government Area (LGA) is made up of nine towns, namely, Amawbia, Awka, Ezinato, Isiagu, Mbaukwu, Nibo, Nise, Okpuno and Umuawulu. There are three major streets that span this area, which are the Zik Avenue, Works Road and Arthur Eze Avenue. In the past, the people of Awka South LGA were well known for blacksmithing. Today they are respected among the Igbo people of Nigeria for their technical and business skills.

Ayogu Eze was a Nigerian politician, elected Senator for the Enugu North Senatorial District of Enugu State, taking office on 5 June 2007. He was later a member of the All Progressives Congress, APC but was elected to the senate under the People's Democratic Party (PDP).

The Adeyemi Federal University of Education is a federal government higher education institution located in Ondo City, Ondo State, Nigeria. It is affiliated with Obafemi Awolowo University for its degree programmes. Adeyemi College of Education was named after Canon M. C. Adeyemi in recognition of his immense contribution to educational development in the then Ondo Province.

Federal College of Education Abeokuta (FCEA), is a public institution authorized with issuance of National Certificate in Education (NCE) to successful graduated students. It was founded in 1976 at Osiele, Ogun State, south west Nigeria. The current Provost is Dr. Rafiu Adekola Soyele. The college runs three programmes: the NCE, a degree in affiliation with University of Ibadan and Lagos State University, and PGDE.

Federal College of Education (Special), Oyo also known as FCE OYO was established on 5 October 1977, as Federal Advanced Teacher's college (Special). The institution, according to a UNDP/UNESCO 1996 report (NIR/87/008) "... Has the best qualify Staff in Special Education not only in Nigeria but in West, North, East and Central Africa." The College is the only one of its kind in Nigeria and sub-Saharan Africa. It has the largest conglomeration of disabled students that could be found in any Higher Institution in Nigeria and the largest concentration of specialized facilities for teaching and training of teachers of the Handicapped in Nigeria. During its 40th anniversary celebration, the college gave special recognition award to former President Olusegun Obasanjo whose military administration brought about the upgrading of the Institution from the then Federal Advanced Teachers College to a College of Education with the mandate to award the National Certificate of Education (NCE) in 1977.

Joy Chinwe Eyisi is a Nigerian professor, author, scholar, educationalist, and philanthropist of Igbo descent. Between 2006 and 2011, she was Head of Department, English Language and Literature, Faculty of Arts, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, (NAU), Awka, Anambra State. She is now Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) of National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), a position she assumed on 26 October 2017. Eyisi, who was hitherto the Centre Director of NOUN's Study Centre in the National Assembly in Abuja, emerged winner of the election held by the University Senate on 25 October 2017. She succeeds Professor Patrick Eya as the University's first female Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic).

Chinwe Nwogo Ezeani, is a Nigerian Chartered Librarian and the immediate past University Librarian of Nnamdi Azikiwe Library, University of Nigeria, Nsukka (U.N.N.). She is a Professor of Library and Information Science. Her tenure as a University Librarian (UL) at Nnamdi Azikiwe Library was between March 2014-March 2019. She is the first female University Librarian since the inception of Nnamdi Azikiwe Library, University of Nigeria Nsukka. In April, 2021, Dr. Ilo Promise Ifeoma took over as the current University Librarian of Nnamdi Azikiwe Library, (U.N.N)
