Ferguson is a ghost town, a former lumber-mill settlement, in Orangeburg County, South Carolina. [2] It was a company town owned by Northern lumbermen Francis Beidler and Benjamin F. Ferguson, both of Chicago. The co-CEOs founded the Santee River Cypress Lumber Company in 1881 for the purpose of harvesting old-growth timber from blackwater river wetlands in central South Carolina. The firm, which controlled 165,000 acres (67,000 ha) of land, concentrated its efforts on bald cypress timber. [3]
Operations were highly profitable, as the Santee Cypress Company had purchased valuable timberland for as little as $2.00/acre. [4] In the 1880s, Beidler and Ferguson set up a company town. They invested in infrastructure for the new village that included paved streets, indoor plumbing, and street lighting with coal gas. Sawmills began to cut wood, and a kiln was built to produce treated wood products such as creosote-infused railroad ties. The post office began operations in 1890. However, the 350 Ferguson workers and their families were exploited through the standard company-town system of paying workers in untransferable "currency." Ferguson company-store coins are marked Santee Mercantile Co. [3]
The Santee Cypress Company shut down its Ferguson operations in 1915. Workers were laid off, and the town was soon abandoned and became a ghost town. The post office ceased operations in 1917. [3] The Santee Cooper Power and Navigation Project, commenced in 1939, included the construction of the Santee Dam downstream from the Ferguson ghost town site. Soon the former town site was covered by the surface of Lake Marion. The lake's shallow waters continue to cover most of the town site as of 2019. [3]

Interstate 95 connects its attractions easily with tourists traveling by automobile. I-95 crosses a narrow arm of the lake into the town lands, along a causeway. Lake Marion is a man-made hydroelectric reservoir, which at 110,000 acres is one of the fifty largest lakes in the country.

The Santee River is a river in South Carolina in the United States, and is 143 miles (230 km) long. The Santee and its tributaries provide the principal drainage for the coastal areas of southeastern South Carolina and navigation for the central coastal plain of South Carolina, emptying into the Atlantic Ocean about halfway between Myrtle Beach and Charleston near the community of McClellanville. The farthest headwaters lie 440 miles (708 km) away on the Catawba River in North Carolina. Besides the Catawba, other principal rivers of the Santee watershed include the Congaree, Broad, Linville, Saluda and the Wateree. The watershed drains a large portion of the Piedmont regions of South and North Carolina. The Santee River is the second largest river on the eastern coast of the United States, second only to the Susquehanna River in drainage area and flow. Much of the upper river is impounded by the expansive, horn-shaped Lake Marion reservoir, formed by the 8-mile (13 km)-long Santee Dam. The dam was built during the Great Depression of the 1930s as a Works Progress Administration (WPA) project to provide a major source of hydroelectric power for the state of South Carolina.

Texla is a ghost town in northern Orange County, Texas, United States, in the southeastern part of the state. It is located northwest of Orange, just west of Mauriceville. The site was originally called Bruce, after the postmaster Charles G. Bruce when the office opened in 1905. The first sawmill to operate there was known as the Harrell-Votaw Lumber Company with a close proximity to the Orange and Northwestern Railway. The following year, the R. W. Wier Lumber Company out of Houston took over operations. The site was renamed Texla, due to its proximity to Louisiana. The owner Wier sold out to the Miller-Link Lumber Company in 1917. The peak population of the town reached an estimated 600 residents. In 1918 the mill was destroyed by fire, but was rebuilt in 1919 with a double-circular mill of the same size. Within a year, the Peavy-Moore Lumber Company of Deweyville took ownership, and operated the site until the nearby timber became exhausted. In 1929, the mill was dismantled and the site was abandoned.
From 1945 until 1977, a sawmill operated under the name Texla Lumber Company in nearby Mauriceville, according to the Texas Forestry Museum.
