The Valkyrie is a GT sports car introduced in 1966 by the Fiberfab company. The Valkyrie's styling was inspired by the lines of the Ford GT40.

History

The Valkyrie was launched in the fall of 1966. [1] It was the first model that Fiberfab offered either as a fully-assembled, turn-key car named the Valkyrie 500 GT, or in kit form as the Valkyrie kit. [1] The price difference between the two was significant — the 500 GT listed for $12,500.00 and the kit for $1495.00. [1] Most Valkyries were owner-built.

Shortly after releasing the Valkyrie, Fiberfab announced a similarly styled, less expensive rear-engined model called the Fiberfab Avenger GT.

The Valkyrie won third place in the prototype section of the 1967 New York International Sports Car Show. [2] Don Sherman, automotive journalist and editor of Car and Driver magazine from 1985 to 1988, owned and built one in the late 1960s. [3] [4]

In 1971 a revised model of the Valkyrie kit was released named the Valkyrie GT-X. [5] The new version used a one-piece body molding instead of the earlier two-piece assembly, and included minor styling revisions like replacing the rear glass with louvers, along with other changes meant to simplify assembly. The wheelbase of the GT-X was longer than the earlier car, resulting in 4 in (102 mm) more interior length.

When the Classic Motor Carriages company bought Fiberfab Inc., they acquired the rights and molds for all of Fiberfab's products except the Valkyrie. The car continued in production in very limited numbers.

In 2003 production of the Valkyrie was restarted by Factory Fiberfab US. [6] Their revival of the Valkyrie body was made from the early two-piece body molds. While the body was original, many upgrades were made to the mechanical aspects of the car. Two versions of the Valkyrie chassis were offered; the GEN 1, and the revised GEN 2 that included a new rear suspension system called "U.M.E.T.S.", for Unitized Multi-link Engine Transmission Suspension. As of this writing a website for Factory Fiberfab US is still up, and is advertising the Valkyrie as available or soon to be, although the site has not been updated for several years.

Features

Like the GT40 it resembles, the Valkyrie is a mid-engined, V8 powered coupe. It came with a custom steel chassis.

The factory-assembled 500 GT featured a leather-trimmed interior, a 5-speed ZF transaxle, 4 wheel Hurst/Airheart disc brakes, and a 427 cu in (7.0 L) big-block engine developing 500 hp (372.8 kW). [1] [6] This version came equipped with a Simpson drag parachute for use at speeds in excess of 140 mph (225 km/h). [9]

For Valkyrie kits, the powertrain and running gear components were sourced by the car's builder, but the factory manual included suggestions.

Front suspension for both the turn-key and kit car was provided by using a complete front subframe from a Chevrolet Corvair. The steering box and linkage were also from a Corvair, as were many of the rear suspension components.

The factory suggested several options for the car's transaxle, including a Corvair 4-speed unit reversed for mid-engine installation, 5-speed or 6-speed units used in different Audi models, or a ZF 5-speed transaxle as used in the 500 GT for high-torque applications. [10]

The kit's manual suggested using a 283 or 327 cu in (4.6 or 5.4 L) Chevrolet small-block engine, but a 289 cu in (4.7 L) Ford Windsor engine could be used with a special bell-housing adapter. [1]

The car's radiator was an aluminum unit that could be sourced from a Corvette. Other pieces to complete the car came from GM, Chevrolet, Pontiac, Ford, and others. [1]

The Corvair was manufactured and marketed in 4-door sedan, 2-door coupe, convertible, 4-door station wagon, passenger van, commercial van, and pickup truck body styles in its first generation (1960–1964) as well as 2-door coupe, convertible and 4-door hardtop in its second (1965–1969).

GM Y platform

The Y platform, or Y body, designation has been used twice by the General Motors Corporation to describe a series of vehicles all built on the same basic body and sharing many parts and characteristics. The first was for a group of entry-level compacts including the conventional front-engine compacts built by GM divisions Buick, Oldsmobile and Pontiac from 1961 to 1963. The second, and current, incarnation is used for a high-end rear-wheel drive sports-car platform from the 1980s through the 2000s.

Transaxle

A transaxle is a single mechanical device which combines the functions of an automobile's transmission, axle, and differential into one integrated assembly. It can be produced in both manual and automatic versions.

The Z platform or Z-body automobile platform designation was used on two different types of vehicles made by General Motors.

XMODS

Official XMods are 1:28 scale electric radio-controlled cars. The cars' primary marketing focus is on customization, and they are available in a variety of body styles and types traditionally favored by tuners. Fall 2005 saw the introduction of a new model line dubbed "Evolution" which also features a line of trucks. The cars are distributed by RadioShack in the United States, by Hobby Products International in Japan and by Carson Modellsport in Europe.

The Chevrolet Turbo-Air 6 is an air-cooled automobile engine developed by General Motors (GM) in the late 1950s for use in the rear-engined Chevrolet Corvair of 1960. Chevrolet Corvette (C1)

The Chevrolet Corvette (C1) is the first generation of the Corvette sports car produced by Chevrolet. It was introduced late in the 1953 model year, and produced through 1962. It is commonly referred to as the "solid-axle" generation, as the independent rear suspension did not appear until the 1963 Sting Ray. The Corvette was rushed into production for its debut model year to capitalize on the enthusiastic public reaction to the concept vehicle, but expectations for the new model were largely unfulfilled. Reviews were mixed and sales fell far short of expectations through the car's early years. The program was nearly canceled, but Chevrolet decided to make necessary improvements.

Chevrolet Corvette (C4) Fourth generation of the Corvette sports car

The Chevrolet Corvette (C4) is a sports car produced by American automobile manufacturer Chevrolet from 1983 to 1996. The convertible returned, as did higher performance engines, exemplified by the 375 hp (280 kW) LT5 found in the ZR-1. In early March 1990, the ZR-1 would set a new record for the highest 24 hour-5,000 mile land-speed by going over a speed of 175 mph (282 km/h). Prices rose and sales declined, in spite of a completely new chassis, modern sleeker styling, and other improvements to the model. The last C4 was produced on June 20, 1996.

Fiberfab Avenger GT

The Avenger GT was a kit car produced by Fiberfab. It was designed in California and manufactured in the United States and Canada for 12 years, from late 1966 until 1978.

Manta Cars was owned and operated by American brothers Brad and Tim LoVette, and was located in Costa Mesa, California, from 1974 to 1986. Manta produced the Manta Mirage, and later produced other component kit cars, including the rear-engined Volkswagen Beetle-based Manta Montage, and the mid-engined Montage-T, which had a custom space frame chassis and used GM X-body V6 drivetrains. The Montage-T recreated the elusive McLaren M6GT.

Devin Enterprises

Devin Enterprises was an American automotive manufacturer that operated from 1955 to 1964. Devin was mainly known for producing high quality fiberglass car bodies that were sold as kits, but they also produced automotive accessories as well as complete automobiles. The company was founded by Bill Devin.

Factory Five Racing, Inc. (F.F.R.) is an American automobile company that designs and manufactures assembly kits, chassis, bodies and related components for replicars and sports cars.

Fiberfab was an American automotive manufacturer established in 1964. Starting with accessories and body parts, they progressed to making kit cars and fully assembled automobiles. They became one of the longest lasting kit car manufacturers.

Chevrolet Corvair Monza GT

The ChevroletCorvair Monza GT was a mid-engined experimental prototype automobile built in 1962 and based on the early model Chevrolet Corvair series. As it was essentially a concept car, the Monza GT did not enter production.

Kelmark Engineering

Kelmark Engineering was an automotive specialty shop established in 1969 and based in Okemos, Michigan. It focused on high-performance custom V8 drivetrain swaps, the modification and production of rear and mid-engined cars, and custom-built turn-key automobiles. Until 1986, Kelmark Engineering manufactured kits and complete, finished, turn-key vehicles which were either Volkswagen-based or built on tubular race car-type frames. The outfit gained its name from Russ Keller and Randy Markham, the two co-creators who started the operation. Up until at least 1989, the Kelmark GT was still available as a kit albeit the manufacturer was Kelmark Motors in Holt, Michigan. The cars are all "rare" models, but the Volkswagen-powered Kelmark GT was the most popular.

Heron Cars

Heron Cars were racing cars, sports and kit cars built in New Zealand between 1962 and 1999 by Ross Baker. They also included a one-off electric car.
