Suva is the capital and largest metropolitan city in Fiji. It is located on the southeast coast of the island of Viti Levu, in the Rewa Province, Central Division.
The Fiji-class cruisers were a class of cruisers of the Royal Navy named after Crown Colonies of the British Empire. The last three were built to a slightly modified design and were also called the Ceylon class.

This was the nation's fifth appearance at an Summer Olympic Games with their first appearance occurring at the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne. Fiji's delegation consisted of two people competing in the Athletics with Tony Moore competing in the 100m, 200m and the long jump while Miriama Tuisorisori-Chambault competed in the women's pentahlon and long jump.
Fiji sent a team to compete in the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China. The country's flagbearer during the Games' opening ceremony was female sprinter Makelesi Bulikiobo. Fiji was represented by a total of six athletes.
Tuvalu competed at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China, from 8 to 24 August 2008. This was the nation's first ever appearance in an Olympic Game. The delegation included two track and field athletes and one weightlifter. Okilani Tinilau and Asenate Manoa participated in athletics while Logona Esau participated in the weightlifting sport. Both track and field athletes achieved national records. Logona Esau led the Tuvaluan squad as the nation's flag bearer in the parade of nations.

This was the nation's thirteenth appearance at the Olympics, having appeared at every games since 1956 except the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, and the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow due to its support for the American-led boycott.

Fiji competed at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow from 23 July to 3 August. This marks Fiji's return to the Commonwealth Games. The country was suspended from the Commonwealth of Nations in September 2009 following the 2006 military coup which brought Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama to power. With elections due on 17 September to restore democracy after eight years of military-led rule, Fiji's suspension was lifted in March 2014. After missing the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi, the country was thus able to return in time for Glasgow however it came too late for them to enter a team in the rugby sevens tournament. The Fiji Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee confirmed a delegation of twenty-six athletes in six sports.
