Fillemon Shuumbwa Nangolo (born 4 June 1974 in Enkono, Ondonga) is the reigning king of Ondonga kingdom, a sub-tribe of Owambo people since 2019 in Namibia. Nangolo is the nephew of late King Immanuel Kauluma Elifas who reigned from 1975 - 2019. [1] The Ondonga tribal area is situated around Namutoni on the eastern edge of Etosha pan in northern Namibia. [2] On 14 April, he was appointed the king of the Aandonga. His uncle Konisa Kalenga was also being crowned as king the same day. [3] [4] The succession dispute ended with Shuumbwa being recognised by Government in June 2019. [5]

Early life and education

Shuumbwa Nangolo's father is the late Namupala gwaNangolo dhaNamupala gwaMvula yaNangolo dhAmutenya gwaSheya shAmakutuwa and his mother is Maria Josef and was raised by his uncle and predecessor, Omukwaniilwa Immanuel Kauluma Elifas at his palace at Onamungundo. In June 2002, the King Elifas appointed Nangolo as his assistant and successor. King Elifas died in March 2019.

Nangolo attended primary school at Okashandja and Olukonda before matriculating at Oshakati Senior Secondary School, he received basic military training at the Osona military base near Okahandja in 1999 and become a member of the then Namibian Defence Force (NDF) air wing unit were he is currently a Wing Commander. [6] In the year 2000 and 2001 he received aircraft instrument, mechanical and pilot-related training from the Denel Technical Academy in Gauteng, South Africa and participated in Operation Atlantic Second Congo War (DRC). Nangolo has also received training in common and customary law and also served on the Law Reform and Development Commission (LRDC), then chaired by the justice minister Sacky Shanghala.

King Shuumbwa was officially installed as the 18th legitimate king of the Ondonga on 29 June 2019 at Onambango palace, a historical event that attracted thousands of people including Namibian vice president Nangolo Mbumba a nephew to Shuumbwa and other government ministers and senior officials. [7] He was officially sworn in by the chairman of the Oukwanyama Traditional Authority, senior traditional councillor George Nelulu, on behalf of the Queen of Oukwanyama, Martha Mwadinomo Nelumbu [8] a day after a second High Court bid by a faction supporting Konis Eino Kalenga for the kingship failed.

Personal life

Nangolo married Adelheid Gustaf at Oniihwa, Onayena on 7 April 2007 and established their homestead at Onambango near Ondangwa, which is now the Ondonga palace.

Ondonga is a traditional kingdom of the Ovambo people in what is today northern Namibia. Its capital is Ondangwa, and the kingdom's palace is at Onambango. Its people call themselves Aandonga. They speak the Ndonga dialect. The Ondonga kingdom is ruled by an Omukwaniilwa (king), assisted by a council of elders, the Ondonga Traditional Authority. After the death of king Immanuel Kauluma Elifas in March 2019, Fillemon Shuumbwa Nangolo was appointed as successor and subsequently recognised by government.

Shilongo Filippus Uukule was senior headman of the Uukwanambwa, a clan of the Ovambo people in Namibia. His residence is located in the Onyaanya Constituency of the Oshikoto Region. He led the Uukwanambwa for 31 years after his father's death and was the senior advisor of King Immanuel Elifas Kauluma of the Ondonga.

Onimwandi is a settlement in the Oshana Region in northern Namibia. It belongs to the Oshakati West electoral constituency and is situated 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) away from Oshakati on the left hand side of the main road on the way to Okahao. The headman of the Oniimwandi village is Mr Erastus Amupolo and his assistant is Mr Juuda Amupolo.

Royal Johan Kxao ǀUiǀoǀoo is a Namibian politician who is serving in the cabinet of Namibia as deputy Minister of Marginalised People since March 2015. He was a member of Parliament as a SWAPO backbencher between 2000 and 2010, and after that a special advisor in the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister.

Fillemon Elifas Shuumbwa was the chief of Ondonga and chief minister of Ovamboland (1972–75). The Ondonga tribal area is situated around Namutoni on the eastern edge of Etosha pan in today's northern Namibia. He was assassinated in 1975 at Onamagongwa and buried in Olikondo.

Omukwaniilwa Immanuel Kauluma Elifas was a chief of the Ondonga, a sub-tribe of Owambo people since 28 August 1975, in Namibia having succeeded his brother the late Chief Fillemon Elifas Shuumbwa who was gunned down the same year at Onamagongwa. The Ondonga tribal area is situated around Namutoni on the eastern edge of Etosha pan in northern Namibia. Kauluma was also the Chairperson of the Council of Traditional Leaders for many years. He was succeeded as King by the designate Omukwaniilwa of Ondonga, his great-grandson Fillemon Shuumbwa Nangolo.

Onamungundo is a settlement in the Ondonga area of Oshikoto Region in Namibia. The village was the seat of the Ondonga royal house during the reign of the late King Immanuel Kauluma Elifas.

The Ondonga royal family consists of monarch of Ondonga of Namibia, the late King Immanuel Kauluma Elifas, his consorts, legitimate descendants, near relatives and female-line descendants of his great-great-grandmothers. As paramount chief within the Republic of Namibia and pursuant to the preservation of African traditional leadership, the hereditary head of the Ondonga dynasty retains kingly dignity, ethnic leadership, ritual authority and a civil list, reigning and ruling in Ondonga in conjunction with the Traditional Authority Act.

The University of Namibia Political Science or UNAM Political Science Department, is a department within the University of Namibia's Faculty of Economic and Management studies in Windhoek Namibia. It is responsible for directing research and teaching programs in the fields of political science and social science. The department was first established in 1992 at the founding of the university. It offers undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD degrees level in Public Administration, Sociology, Political Science International Relations and Philosophy some of which are interfaculty linked.

Onambango is a settlement in the Ondonga area of Oshana Region in Namibia near Ondangwa town. The village is the current seat of the Ondonga royal house during the reign of the King Fillemon Shuumbwa Nangolo.
