Triple J is a government-funded, national Australian radio station intended to appeal to listeners of alternative music, which began broadcasting in January 1975. The station also places a greater emphasis on broadcasting Australian content compared to commercial stations. Triple J is a division of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.
Triple M is an Australian radio brand owned and operated by Southern Cross Austereo. Under this brand falls four networks – the longest-running and 'main' network is the Metropolitan network – which focuses on a mix of rock, sport and comedy. There are four of these stations all in capital cities. The second is the Digital Radio network, which consists of all the rock, sport and comedy stations – as well as KOFM, Gold FM, Mix 94.5 & Mix 106.3 plus 'Triple M Classic Rock', 'Triple M Country', 'Triple M Aussie' and 'Triple M Greatest Hits'. The third network is one part of the former LocalWorks network – the Greatest Hits network. This was formed on 15 December when most of the stations owned by Southern Cross Austereo were rebranded to either Triple M or Hit. These play the 'Greatest Hits' from the 1970s–present, or the 1980s–present. Also formed from the end of the LocalWorks network was the Classic Hits network, which plays the 'Classic Hits' of the 1960s, '70s, and '80s.

For many years, the show's producer and presenter, Stephen Hill, has applied the term "space music" to the music broadcast on the show, irrespective of genre. It is the longest-running radio program of its type in the world. Each episode ends with Hill gently saying, "Safe journeys, space fans... wherever you are."

SYN is an Australian community radio station broadcasting to Melbourne, Victoria. First broadcast in January 2003, the station is operated by SYN Media under a youth license, with programming presented entirely by volunteers aged 12–25 years old. The station broadcasts from studios on the campus of RMIT University, with additional content syndicated from other community radio stations in Australia.

Since then it has operated successfully as a non-profit community-based organisation broadcasting classical and jazz music. 3MBS also led the way for the introduction of community radio in Australia back in 1968.
Barry was a comedy digital radio station broadcasting to the five mainland state capital cities in Australia. The station is owned by Austereo and was the second permanent digital-only station the company has launched, alongside Radar Radio. The station was launched on 16 July 2010. It ceased operation in June 2012.
John Thomas Blades was an Australian experimental music artist and member of The Loop Orchestra; he also worked as a radio broadcaster and documentary maker, and as a civil engineer. In 1982 he was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and used a wheelchair from 1993. In 2010, his radio documentary, The Too Hard Basket, won the Walkley Award for 'Social Equity Journalism – All Media', and the 'Radio Documentary of the Year Award' from the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union. Blades died on 25 November 2011 after complications from cancer therapy.
The earliest western musical influences in Australia can be traced to two distinct sources: in the first settlements, the large body of convicts, soldiers and sailors who brought the traditional folk music of England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland; and the first free settlers, some of whom had been exposed to the European classical music tradition in their upbringing. An example of original music by a convict would be an 1861 tune dedicated to settler James Gordon by fiddler constable Alexander Laing. Very little music has survived from this early period, although there are samples of music originating from Sydney and Hobart that date back to the early 19th century. Musical publications from this period preserved in Australian libraries include works by Charles Edward Horsley, William Stanley (composer), Isaac Nathan, Charles Sandys Packer, Frederick Augustus Packer, Carl Linger, Francis Hartwell Henslowe, Frederick Ellard, Raimund Pechotsch and Julius Siede.
