Fish56Octagon (born 1979 or 1980) is a British electronic dance music disc jockey and marketing professional who has gained a social media following due to his videos exhibiting his enthusiasm for dance music, typically while wearing a dressing gown. Since gaining popularity he has played live sets at several notable events including Creamfields, Boomtown and Glastonbury Festival. [1] [2] [3]

Biography

Following formal education Fish56Octagon, sometimes known as Fish, worked in the marketing industry in a variety of sectors. [1]

During lockdown Fish started making TikTok videos, giving automobile and insurance advice and tips to drivers. He accumulated c.155,000 followers, and had a feature article in the Scottish Sun. [1] [4] In 2023/2024 he changed the focus of his videos to depict himself playing different genres of electronic music, including speed garage, rave and psy-trance, often in domestic scenarios. Subsequently Fish56Octagon gained a cult following, largely by "sharing his infectious love for all electronic music genres", and accumulated c.500,000 followers on Instagram. [1] [2] [5] It has been reported that his success has been dismissed by rave "know-it-alls", however Fish has responded saying "that you can just put yourself out there and not care what other people think". [6]

In May 2024 Glastonbury festival announced a tribute to DJ Annie Nightingale, to be held that year at the Glade stage, that featured Fish playing a DJ set with music favoured by Nightingale. [7] [8] He headlined the Pepsi Max trance tent at Creamfields the same year, reportedly attracting a substantial crowd. [9] Fish made his Scottish live debut in September 2024, playing at the SWG3 club. [10] His performance at the 2024 Parklife festival was reviewed as "one of the highlight sets". [11] He also had a sold-out tour in the United Kingdom in the summer of 2024, and was scheduled to play at the Beyond the Valley festival in Australia. [5] [12]

In June 2024 the Guardian reported that Fish56Octagon is not his real name, [6] and that he is reluctant to reveal what it is. [1] In August 2024 it was reported that Fish had quit the "day job" in order to focus on his live music career. [2]

The Octagon Discs record label was launched by Fish in September 2024, with the first release a remix of Superstylin' by Declan Knapp. [13]

Personal life

Fish lives in Southeast England with his wife and two children. [1]

Norman Quentin Cook, better known as Fatboy Slim, is an English musician, DJ, and record producer who helped to popularise the big beat genre in the 1990s. Shitmat is an English breakcore artist and mashup producer, one of several monikers used by Henry Collins. Shitmat became known in the early 2000s for releases on the Ad Noiseam and Planet Mu labels. Creamfields is an electronic dance music festival series founded and organised by British club promoter Cream, with its UK edition taking place on August Bank Holiday weekend, with a number of international editions held across various territories worldwide.

Electronic dance music (EDM), also referred to as club music, is a broad range of percussive electronic music genres originally made for nightclubs, raves, and festivals. It is generally produced for playback by DJs who create seamless selections of tracks, called a DJ mix, by segueing from one recording to another. Swedish House Mafia (SHM) are a Swedish house supergroup consisting of Axwell, Steve Angello and Sebastian Ingrosso. The group officially formed in late 2008, were placed at number ten on the DJ Mag Top 100 DJ Poll 2011, and have been called "the faces of mainstream progressive house music", while being credited for "setting the tone for the EDM boom of the early 2010s, more than any other act in modern dance music". Bang Face is an electronic dance music event that has been taking place at various venues across the UK and Europe since 2003. Referring to itself as a Neo-Rave Explosion, Beatport announced on 18 April 2024 that its newest genre was Neo Rave - "Coined by BangFace, Neo Rave encompasses the harder styles of dance music". Starting as a monthly club night in London, it has grown to include an annual weekender, a boat party on the River Thames, as well as guest shows at festivals such as Glastonbury. In 2013 Bang Face celebrated its 10th birthday with DJ Mag stating Bang Face [maintains] "the perfect blend of old skool rave and the finest contemporary leftfield sounds". In March 2015 Bang Face reached the milestone of 100 events by hosting the Weekender at Southport Holiday Park. Resident Advisor asked the question "Is Bangface the most unique rave out there?" and described it as a "Neo-rave utopia". In 2023 Bang Face celebrated 20 years of events with the 2023 Weekender headlined by Orbital.

John Walker known by his stage name, Kutski is a British radio DJ, from Chester, England. He presented various shows for BBC Radio 1, playing a variety of hard dance music, including breakbeat, electro, hard trance, hardcore and hardstyle. Kutski now produces and hosts a weekly podcast, "Keeping the Rave Alive", which plays music similar to that heard on his BBC Radio 1 shows.
