The flag of the Assembly of the Republic is the flag of the unicameral parliament of Portugal, the Assembly of the Republic. [1]

History

The idea of the flag began as a proposal by the president of the Assembly at the time, Jaime Gama. The flag was established in 2006 by Resolution of the Assembly of the Republic No. 73, dated 14 December 2006 and published on 28 December 2006 in issue number 248 of the Diário da República. It was hoisted for the first time on 3 January 2007 on the balcony of the Salão Nobre of the São Bento Palace. [2] [3]

The flag of Brazil, known in Portuguese as Verde e amarela, or less usually Auriverde, is a blue disc depicting a starry sky spanned by a curved band inscribed with the national motto "Ordem e Progresso", within a yellow rhombus, on a green field. Brazil officially adopted this design for its national flag on November 19, 1889 — four days after the Proclamation of the Republic, to replace the flag of the Empire of Brazil. The flag of Portugal is a rectangular bicolour with a field divided into green on the hoist, and red on the fly. The lesser version of the national coat of arms is centered over the colour boundary at equal distance from the upper and lower edges. On 30 June 1911, less than a year after the downfall of the constitutional monarchy, this design was officially adopted for the new national flag of the First Portuguese Republic, after selection by a special commission whose members included Columbano Bordalo Pinheiro, João Chagas and Abel Botelho.

The 5 October 1910 revolution was the overthrow of the centuries-old Portuguese Monarchy and its replacement by the First Portuguese Republic. It was the result of a coup d'état organized by the Portuguese Republican Party.

Same-sex marriage in Portugal has been legal since 5 June 2010. The XVIII Constitutional Government of Portugal under Prime Minister José Sócrates introduced a bill for legalization in December 2009. It was passed by the Assembly of the Republic in February 2010, and was declared legally valid by the Portuguese Constitutional Court in April 2010. On 17 May 2010, President Aníbal Cavaco Silva ratified the law, making Portugal the sixth country in Europe and the eighth country in the world to allow same-sex marriage nationwide. The law was published in the official journal, the Diário da República, on 31 May 2010 and became effective on 5 June 2010.

2009 Portuguese legislative election

The Portuguese legislative election of 2009 was held on 27 September, to renew all 230 members of the Assembly of the Republic. The Socialist Party, led by incumbent Prime Minister José Sócrates, won the largest number of seats, but didn't repeat the overall majority they gained in 2005.

The assembleia de freguesia is the legislature of a freguesia, the local administrative unit LAU 2 of Portugal. The laws regulating the assembleias de freguesia are the Lei n.o 169/99, de 18 de Setembro and the Lei n.o 5-A/2002 de 11 de Janeiro. The number of members of each assembly is dependent on the number of registered voters in each freguesia ranging from 7 if there are 1,000 or less registered voters to 19 if there are over 20,000 and an increase of one member per 10,000 registered voters after 30,000.

The junta de freguesia is the executive body of a freguesia, a subdivision of each municipality of Portugal. Each freguesia also has a legislature, this being the assembleia de freguesia.

Under Ministerial Order n. 150/2004 of 13 February, issued by the Portuguese Ministry of Finance and consequently updated, Portugal defines an official blacklist of countries and jurisdictions considered for legal and tax purposes as tax havens.

The Medal of Merit of the Autonomous Region of Madeira is the highest honour given by the autonomous region. Álvaro Barreto was a Portuguese politician and engineer, and a member of the Social Democratic Party. From 1978 to 2005, he occupied various government ministry offices.

Júlio Francisco Miranda Calha was a Portuguese Socialist Party politician. He served in the Assembly of the Republic from the Constituent Assembly in 1975 until the end of the 13th legislature in 2019.

Francisca Almeida is a Portuguese lawyer and politician. As a member of the Social Democratic Party, she represented the Braga constituency in the 11th and 12th legislatures of the Assembly of the Republic of Portugal, between 2009 and 2015.
