Flames United SC is a Sint Maarten football club that currently plays in the SMSA Senior League, the highest level of football on Dutch Sint Maarten. [5] The club's home ground is the Raoul Illidge Sports Complex in Philipsburg, the country's capital. The club also fields a futsal team. [6] The current manager is Omar Hunter and the current team captain is Loxley Parker. [4]

History

Flames United Sports Club was founded in January 2010. [2] The team won its first league championship in 2015. [7] The club also finished the Excellence Division, a competition between the top teams from the islands of Sint Maarten, Saint Martin and St. Barths, as champions in 2013 [8] and runners-up in 2012. [9]

In January 2016 it was announced that the Flames United squad would play as the Sint Maarten national football team during 2017 Caribbean Cup qualification after winning the league championship for the recently concluded season. [3] [5] However, shortly thereafter it was reported that the previous report was inaccurate and that Flames United would actually be competing in CFU Club Championship for the first time. [10]

The club participated in the 2017 CFU Club Championship. They were drawn into Group E with all matches being played at Victoria Park in Kingstown, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. [11] They were eliminated from contention following two defeats in which they conceded nine goals per match. Yonel Martin and Rosshawn Haird scored the club's first-ever goals in the competition in the team's 2–9 defeat to System 3 FC of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. [12]

Sint Maarten is a constituent country of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in the Caribbean. With a population of 41,486 as of January 2019 on an area of 34 km2 (13 sq mi), it encompasses the southern 44% of the divided island of Saint Martin, while the northern 56% of the island constitutes the French overseas collectivity of Saint Martin. The 2007 CFU Club Championship was the annual international football club competition held in the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) region. Nineteen teams were to compete in the tournament, from November 4 to November 16 in six venues in Trinidad and Tobago. The first round consisted of five groups played in a round-robin format. The first round group winners along with the three best second-place teams advanced to the quarterfinals. The Caribbean Tournament Champion qualified to the 2008 CONCACAF Champions Cup.

The 2009 CFU Club Championship was the 11th edition of the CFU Club Championship, the annual international club football competition in the Caribbean region, held amongst clubs whose football associations are affiliated with the Caribbean Football Union (CFU). The top three teams in the tournament – W Connection, Puerto Rico Islanders, and San Juan Jabloteh – qualified for the 2009–10 CONCACAF Champions League.

The 2010 Caribbean Cup was the 2010 edition of the Caribbean Championship, an international football championship for national teams affiliated with the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) of the CONCACAF region. The final stage was hosted by Martinique. Martinique were selected as hosts over fellow bidders Guadeloupe and Barbados. The competition was originally scheduled to begin on 18 August with the final match taking place on 28 November. However, at the beginning of August 2010, the CFU released a different schedule that showed the competition being postponed until 2 October. Also, the Bahamas pulled out of the competition, leaving 23 teams. The groups were changed, allowing Cuba and Antigua and Barbuda to get a bye to the second qualifying round at the expense of Guyana and the Netherlands Antilles.

The sport of association football in the island of Bonaire is run by the Bonaire Football Federation. The association administers the men's national team, the women's national team, as well as the Bonaire League.

This is a list of Sint Maartener football clubs in international competitions. Sint Maartener clubs have participated in international club competitions since at least 1956, when there was the Bonaire–Sint Maarten series. Sint Maartener clubs have participated in competitive CONCACAF football competitions since at least 2017 when Flames United entered the 2017 CFU Club Championship. To date this is the only time a Sint Maartener team has participated in a CONCACAF competition.

The Sint Eustatius national football team is the national association football team of the Caribbean island of Sint Eustatius. It is a not member of the Caribbean Football Union, CONCACAF, or FIFA and therefore cannot compete in tournaments sanctioned by these organizations. It is under the auspices of the Statia Football Association.

Association football is a popular sport on the Caribbean island of Saba.
