Flax production in Nepal

The production of flax (Linum usitatissimum) and other oilseed crops peak in the temperate climates of the middle mountain and hill farming regions in Nepal . [1] Flax matures in approximately 90 to 125 days and develops most rapidly under the cool, short season of growing. The middle hill region of the Lamjung district (the epicenter of the earthquake devastating Nepal in April 2015) exemplifies an ideal climate for flax production experiencing consistently cool temperatures for most of the year. [1] [2] The shallow rooting system makes the plant especially susceptible to drought and excess moisture in the soil but easier to harvest. [3] Most cash crops are grown in the hill regions of Nepal as this is where two-thirds of the subsistence farmers reside, who need to produce just enough food to feed themselves and their families. Production

Oilseed production in Nepal was largely replaced by grain crops which contain a higher caloric value but requires higher labor and overall decrease in nutritional quality for the Nepalese. [4] Flax production is seen to be increasing as Nepal's reported yields in 2012 are 5000 hectograms per hectare (Hg/Ha) and 5358 Hg/Ha in 2013 referring to a production quantity of 7500 tons and 7672 tons respectively. [5] The cool and temperate climate of the mid-hill regions in Nepal present great potential for farmers to maximize their linseed yields and the yield of proceeding cash-crops through disease and pest control. [3] The hill regions of the Lamjung district is less than 170 km from the capital of Nepal, Kathmandu, which represents an ideal market for trading of the flax seeds or any by-products of the crop made by Nepalese farmers and their families. Benefits of flax production

Crop rotation

Entering flax into the crop rotation reduces the prevalence of disease and pests as flax varieties are less susceptible to diseases such as Sclerotinia stem rot, flea beetles, and certain species of Fusarium that devastate cereal crops. [3] Further use of flax production will increase the yields of other grain crash crops and provide Nepalese farmers with by-products for personal use or sale. [3]

Whole flax straw

Whole flax straw holds great agricultural value to subsistence farmers. When left on the field, the straw will protect the soil from wind and water erosion and can be used as livestock bedding or mulch. [3] Due to the topography of hills and mountains, run-off and erosion is of concern. Whole flax straw can help to alleviate and reduce the occurrence of this erosion. [1] [2] [3] Additionally, remnants of straw and fiber remaining on the soil will return nutrients to the soil, increasing soil fertility and, in turn, increasing future cash crop yields. [2] [3]

Lastly, deforestation for fuel use is an ongoing issue in Nepal. [1] By-products of flax harvest are used as a biofuel source in Canada; this methodology can be transposed in Nepal and lessen the need for the hill and mountain farmers to scavenge for wood-sourced fuels. [1] [3]

Flax fiber

There is world market demand for flax straw and fiber in environmentally friendly products, textiles, and biofuel. [3] Farmers often maximize their cash returns in producing quality seed and neglect the production of whole straw and fiber––an excellent opportunity for Nepalese farmers to fill the niche market. [3] Flax fiber can be used in textiles such as linen and cottonized flax, in pulp sweeteners, and insulation, where there is remarkable demand. [3] Environmentally-friendly products are becoming more and more popular around the world. [3] For example, plastic composites using flax fibers are continuing to become more popular in the modern world's automotive industry. Productions of composites require less energy than fiberglass to process and manufacture which results in a lighter vehicle that is more efficient. [3] [6]

Shive

Shive is the non-fibre parts of the stem and comprises anywhere from 70 to 85% of the total straw weight and therefore a major by-product of flax straw processing. It is destined for use in bio-fuel, mulch and animal bedding. [3]

Nutrition

Flaxseed oil is high in alpha linoleic fatty acid (ALA) of which is important to human and animal nutrition. [1] The flaxseed itself can be consumed by the general population. With its short maturation period and self-pollination, the crop can produce multiple cuts of straw and seeds. [3] A versatile crop, flaxseed can be used in breads and cereals as well as oil for supplementation as it is a great source of micronutrients, ALA, and fiber. [7]

Potential drawbacks of flax production

Harvest

Harvesting whole flax straw and fiber can be a challenge. Whole flax straw is historically left in the field to decay over time or raked into piles and burned as it tends to clog farm equipment and thus makes collection difficult. As a result, harvest and post-harvest labor may be lengthy and time-consuming if the straw and fibers are constantly clogging the discs of the plow. [3]

Transport and storage

Another challenge is the transport and storage of flaxseed once harvested. [3] Purchasing price from manufacturers and processing plants is largely dependent on quality (there are few grading guidelines established in Canada). [3] Although the climactic regions of Nepal are ideal for flax production, spoilage may be an issue with increased temperatures and humidity that may be associated with transport and time of season. [1] [2] [3] Transporting the materials to Canada will come as a cost deduction in spot price to Nepalese farmers; this may ultimately determine the profitability of the crop to the farmer. [3]

Jimbu is a herb belonging to the onion family, used extensively in some regions of Nepal and in some central Himalayan states of India, like Uttarakhand, where it is called Jamboo / Faran. It is composed of two species of Allium, A. hypsistum and A. przewalskianum. The herb, which has a taste in between onion and chives, is most commonly used dried. In the Mustang district of Nepal and Kumaon region of Uttarakhand, it is used to flavor vegetables, pickles, and meat. In the rest of Nepal it is most commonly used to flavor urad dal or lentils. The dried leaves are fried in ghee to develop their flavor. After harvest, people store Jimbu dried for later use since it is a seasonal herb.

<i>Thysanolaena</i> Genus of grasses

Thysanolaena is a genus of plants in the grass family, the only genus in the tribe Thysanolaeneae. Its only recognized species is Thysanolaena latifolia, native to Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, New Guinea, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam. It is also naturalized in Mauritius, Seychelles, Gambia, Tanzania, Hawaii, California, the West Indies and Brazil. Tiger grass, Nepalese broom grass, broom grass, broom stick are common names for this plant, in Nepali amliso and jharu in Assamese. The flowers of this plant are used as cleaning tool or broom, which is known askuchcho in Nepali and jhadu in Hindi.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Farming systems in India</span>

Farming systems in India are strategically utilized, according to the locations where they are most suitable. The farming systems that significantly contribute to the agriculture of India are subsistence farming, organic farming, industrial farming. Regions throughout India differ in types of farming they use; some are based on horticulture, ley farming, agroforestry, and many more. Due to India's geographical location, certain parts experience different climates, thus affecting each region's agricultural productivity differently. India is very dependent on its monsoon cycle for large crop yields. India's agriculture has an extensive background which goes back to at least 9 thousand years. In India, in the alluvial plains of the Indus River in Pakistan, the old cities of Mohenjo-Daro and Harappa experienced an apparent establishment of an organized farming urban culture. That society, known as the Harappan or Indus civilization, flourished until shortly after 4000 BP; it was much more comprehensive than those of Egypt or Babylonia and appeared earlier than analogous societies in northern China. Currently, the country holds the second position in agricultural production in the world. In 2007, agriculture and other industries made up more than 16% of India's GDP. Despite the steady decline in agriculture's contribution to the country's GDP, agriculture is the biggest industry in the country and plays a key role in the socio-economic growth of the country. India is the second-largest producer of wheat, rice, cotton, sugarcane, silk, groundnuts, and dozens more. It is also the second biggest harvester of vegetables and fruit, representing 8.6% and 10.9% of overall production, respectively. The major fruits produced by India are mangoes, papayas, sapota, and bananas. India also has the biggest number of livestock in the world, holding 281 million. In 2008, the country housed the second largest number of cattle in the world with 175 million.

Chrysopogon nigritanus, more widely known by the taxonomic synonym Vetiveria nigritana, or the common name black vetivergrass, is a perennial grass species of the family Poaceae and therefore is also a monocotyledon. More specifically, Vetiveria nigritana is a very thick and tall type of grass that is deeply rooted within the ground and is usually used to protect crops and deter soil erosion. Vetiveria nigritana is also a native species to Africa and is most commonly seen in Nigeria, Northern Africa, Eastern Africa and tropical parts of Southern Africa. In addition, the plant, like other vetiver grasses, has been used in these regions due to its extreme drought tolerance, ability to grow in infertile soil and the fact that it can live under complete submergence. In fact, Vetiveria nigritana can thrive in a very diverse range of environmental and climatic conditions.

Sorghum is an important staple crop for more than 500 million people in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia, including many people in Nepal. In statistics collected from 1992 to 1994 about general millet, Nepal had an area of 0.21 million ha, with a yield rate of 1.14 (t/ha), and produced around 0.24 million tons of sorghum. The entirety of the crop is highly valued, with both the grain and the stem being utilized. The Terai region of Nepal tends to be more tropical which is ideal for the growth of sorghum. It tolerates hot climates better than maize or soybeans. For subsistence farmers, like those in Nepal, fertilizers are not necessary and the crop is frequently harvested by hand.

Chickpeas are a major pulse legume grown in Nepal, either by themselves or as an intercrop with maize or rice. Chickpeas are an important legume to the population, as it is the primary protein source for nearly 2 million Nepalese people. In 2013, Nepal imported approximately US$10.1 million in dried shelled chickpeas, mostly from Australia and also from Canada, creating a need to increase production for its own people and to balance bilateral trade. Chickpeas are an excellent source of protein, especially when compared to other legume pulses. They are high in unsaturated fatty acids and minerals, including calcium, magnesium, phosphorus and potassium.

Cocoyam is a tuberous root crop cultivated in many regions of South Asia. Cocoyams share many of the same nutritional and agricultural characteristics as potatoes and other root crops such as cassava and yams.
