Florence Kabugho is a Ugandan politician and former radio journalist, elected to the eleventh Parliament of Uganda in the 2021 general election, as the woman representative for Kasese District. [1] [2] [3]
Before entering politics Florence was a radio journalist. She resigned from a job at Radio Uganda to work for Messiah FM in the Rwenzori sub-region. She worked for Omusinga Charles Mumbere of Rwenzururu, in several roles, including Deputy Kingdom Spokesperson, Minister for Gender and Protocol Minister. When the palace was attacked and Mumbere arrested in 2016 she almost lost her life. [4]
In July 2020 Winnie Kiiza announced her retirement from elective politics, after fifteen years as MP for Kasese District. Florence Kabugho was one of four candidates to succeed Kiiza in the FDC nomination. [5] She secured the FDC nomination in the August 2020 FDC primaries, winning 259 votes against Catherine Muhindo (111 votes), Ruth Kabguho (54 votes) and Annet Night (39 votes). [6]
In November 2020 Kabugho was among FDC candidates blocked by police from launching their manifestos at playgrounds in Karambi sub-county. [7] She said that her manifesto priorities were education for girls and local health facilities. [8] After Kizza Besigye's decision not to run for the presidency in the 2021 election, Kabugho predicted that the FDC would keep its parliamentary support in Kasese. [9]
Florence was elected to Parliament in the 2021 general election, as the women's representative for Kasese District. As the FDC lost three other seats in Kasese to the NRM, local opposition parties joined forces for the local council and mayoral elections. [10]
Rukungiri District is a district in the Western Region of Uganda. The town of Rukungiri is the site of the district headquarters.
The Forum for Democratic Change, founded on 16 December 2004, is the main opposition party in Uganda. The FDC was founded as an umbrella body called Reform Agenda, mostly for disenchanted former members and followers of President Yoweri Museveni's National Resistance Movement (NRM). Party president Kizza Besigye, formerly a close ally of Museveni, was a candidate in 2001, 2006, 2011 and 2016 presidential elections. In November 2012, Mugisha Muntu was elected as President of the FDC until November 2017 when he was defeated by Patrick Oboi Amuriat the current party President until 2022.
Warren Kizza Besigye Kifefe, known as Colonel Dr. Kizza Besigye, is a Ugandan physician, politician, and former military officer of the Uganda People's Defence Force. He served as the president of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) political party and was an unsuccessful candidate in Uganda's 2001, 2006, 2011, and 2016 presidential elections, losing all of them to the incumbent, Yoweri Museveni, who has been president of Uganda since 26 January 1986. The results of the 2006 elections were contested in court, and the court found massive rigging and disenfranchisement. Besigye allowed an early internal FDC election for a successor president, which took place on 24 November 2012.
Charles Wesley Mumbere, known by his royal title Irema-Ngoma I, is the king of Rwenzururu, a subnational kingdom within Uganda. Mumbere was arrested in December 2016 after the clashes in the kingdom's capital of Kasese, and has since been in prison awaiting trial.

Phillip Wafula Oguttu is a Ugandan journalist and politician. He is a former Leader of Opposition in the Ugandan Parliament. He was appointed to that position on 31 January 2014, replacing Nandala Mafabi, and held it until June 2016 when he handed over the position to Winnie Kiiza.

Violence erupted on 26 November 2016 in the town of Kasese, the capital of the Ugandan Kingdom of Rwenzururu, when Ugandan police raided the government offices of the Rwenzururu kingdom, killing eight Rwenzururian royal guards and arresting two others. According to the government of Uganda, the raid was in response to militant attacks on police posts in the region two weeks earlier, allegedly perpetrated by the royal guards.

Anita Annet Among is a Ugandan accountant, lawyer and politician who is the Speaker of the 11th Parliament of Uganda since 2022. She also concurrently serves as the elected member of parliament for the Bukedea District Women Constituency, the same position she held in the 10th Parliament (2016–2021). She was in FDC party before she joined the ruling NRM where she was voted as the Deputy Speaker of the 10th Parliament. She is named in the torture complaint against the Ugandan government that was submitted with the International Criminal Court.
