Florian Andrighetto

Florian Andrighetto (born 24 February 1953) is an Australian politician. He was a Liberal Party member of the Victorian Legislative Assembly from 1996 to 1999, representing the electorate of Narracan.

Andrighetto was born in Fara, Italy. He served in the Victoria Police from 1976 to 1996, serving for the last six of those years as a police prosecutor. He also served as a member of the Tarago Water Board from 1991 to 1994, including a stint as chairman from 1993 to 1994. [1]

Andrighetto was preselected as the Liberal candidate for the Liberal-held seat of Narracan for the 1996 state election, defeating current Narracan MLA Gary Blackwood. He went on to defeat Labor candidate and future Morwell MLA Brendan Jenkins in the election. [2] [3]

He attracted attention in December 1997 when he aired claims in parliament that high-profile trade unionist and former Victorian Trades Hall Council secretary John Halfpenny had been claiming WorkCover benefits while working as a consultant. Andrighetto's speech led to an investigation, and Halfpenny was subsequently charged and found guilty of defrauding WorkCover. [4] [5] [6] In 1998, he chaired a committee which recommended a significant tightening of alcohol-based criminal defences after a public outcry over the acquittal on assault charges of rugby league player Noa Nadruku. [7]

Andrighetto was defeated amidst the Kennett government's loss at the 1999 state election by Labor candidate Ian Maxfield. He attributed his defeat to Kennett's ban on candidates and MPs speaking to the media during the campaign and resentment against the Kennett government in regional areas. [8] He returned to the police force after his defeat, working in the ethical standards department, but subsequently retrained as a lawyer, gaining a degree from Deakin University in 2002 and gaining admission to the bar. [9] [10] [11] He was the defence lawyer for Mikhail Zubkov, the father of Ukrainian swimmer Kateryna Zubkova after a heavily-publicised altercation at the 2007 FINA World Swimming Championships which saw Zubkov subject to a restraining order. His brother, Peter McGauran, was the National member for Gippsland until 2008, and was Minister for Agriculture in the Howard government.

John Brumby Australian politician; Premier of Victoria

John Mansfield Brumby is the current Chancellor of La Trobe University and former Victorian Labor Party politician who was Premier of Victoria from 2007 to 2010. He became leader of the Victorian Labor Party and premier after the resignation of Steve Bracks. He also served as the Minister for Veterans' Affairs and the Minister for Multicultural Affairs. He contested his first election as premier at the November 2010 Victorian state election. His government was defeated by the Liberal/National Coalition led by Ted Baillieu. Brumby resigned as Labor leader after the election, on 30 November, to be replaced by Daniel Andrews. Within weeks of this leadership change, Brumby left parliament, with a Broadmeadows by-election taking place on 19 February 2011.

He resigned as Premier on 6 March 2013, and was succeeded by Denis Napthine.

The 1999 Victorian state election, held on Saturday, 18 September 1999, was for the 54th Parliament of Victoria. It was held in the Australian state of Victoria to elect the 88 members of the state's Legislative Assembly and 22 members of the 44-member Legislative Council. The Liberal–National Coalition led by Jeff Kennett and Pat McNamara was narrowly defeated due mainly to a significant swing against it in rural and regional Victoria. The winner was decided by three rural independents who ultimately decided to back the Labor Party to form a minority government led by Steve Bracks, who was sworn in as Premier of Victoria on 20 October 1999.

Ian James Cover is an Australian radio presenter, comedian, politician and author. He rose to prominence as a founding member of radio sporting comedy group the Coodabeen Champions, entered Victorian state politics in 1996, serving one term as a Liberal Party member of the Victorian Legislative Council, and subsequently returned to radio comedy. Cover has also been a radio presenter and newspaper columnist in his own right, and has written three books.

2018 Victorian state election Election for the 59th Parliament of Victoria

The 2018 Victorian state election was held on Saturday, 24 November 2018 to elect the 59th Parliament of Victoria. All 88 seats in the Legislative Assembly and all 40 seats in the Legislative Council were up for election. The first-term incumbent Labor government, led by Premier Daniel Andrews, won a second four-year term, defeating the Liberal/National Coalition opposition, led by Opposition Leader Matthew Guy. Minor party the Greens led by Samantha Ratnam also contested the election.
