Football at the 1959 Pan American Games was held in Chicago, Illinois, from August 28 to September 6, 1959. Seven teams competed in a round-robin competition with Cuba, Haiti and the hosts (United States) competing in their first Pan American Games football tournament. Argentina defended the gold medal they had won at the previous games finishing with 11 points from a possible 12 points while Brazil and the United States claimed silver and bronze respectively. [3]

The 1999 Copa América was a football tournament held in Paraguay, from 29 June to 18 July. It was organized by CONMEBOL, South America's football governing body.
The 1993 Copa América was the 36th Copa América, CONMEBOL's football tournament for national teams. It was held in Ecuador between 15 June and 4 July. All 10 CONMEBOL members took part, but for the first time two nations from outside CONMEBOL were invited to take part in the tournament, to round out the format. Mexico and the United States, both of CONCACAF, were the invited teams for this tournament. Argentina defeated Mexico in the final 2–1 to win their record 14th continental championship, also their last senior title until 2021.

The 1975 edition of the Copa América football tournament was played between 17 July and 28 October. For the first time there was no fixed venue, and all matches were played throughout the year in each country. In addition, the tournament changed its name from South American Championship to Copa América. All ten CONMEBOL countries participated, with defending champions Uruguay receiving a bye into the semi-finals and the rest starting in the group stage.
The nineteenth edition of the South American Championship in football was held in Buenos Aires, Argentina from 12 January to 10 February. This tournament, an extra edition with no trophy handed to the winners, is considered official by CONMEBOL.

The football tournament at the 1960 Summer Olympics was held from 26 August to 10 September in 1960 throughout Italy. The tournament featured 16 men's national teams from four continental confederations. The 16 teams were drawn into four groups of four and each group played a round-robin tournament. At the end of the group stage, the first-ranked teams of each group advanced to the semi-finals, and culminating with the gold medal match in Rome on 10 September 1960.
The fourth edition of the football tournament at the Pan American Games was held in São Paulo, Brazil, from April 20 to May 4, 1963. Five teams competed in a round-robin competition, with Argentina being the defending champions. Brazil, Argentina and Chile qualified for the tournament at the beginning of the year, while Peru and Paraguay did not.
The fifth edition of the football tournament at the Pan American Games was held in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, from July 24 to August 3, 1967. Eight teams divided in two groups of four did compete in a round-robin competition, with Brazil defending the title.
