Men's football took place at the 1987 South Asian Games in Calcutta, India. India won its second title by defeating Nepal in the final and became the first team to defend the title successfully. [1] [2]

The India national football team represents India in international football and is governed by the All India Football Federation (AIFF) and is under the global jurisdiction of FIFA. It is governed in Asia by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) and in South Asia by South Asian Football Federation (SAFF), both of which were co-founded by the Indian team's supervising body, the AIFF.

The 1987 South Asian Games, officially the 3rd South Asian Federation Games were a multi-sport event, held in Kolkata, India from 20 November to 27 November 1987. It was the largest sporting event ever to be held in Kolkata, and West Bengal as a whole. This was also the first time when India hosted these Games.

Pradip Kumar BanerjeeFIFAOM was an Indian professional footballer who played as a striker for the India national football team. He also captained the national team and later on became the coach of the national team. He represented India in 45 official matches and scored 15 official goals for the country. He was one of the first recipients of Arjuna Award, when the awards were instituted in 1961. He was awarded the prestigious Padma Shri in 1990 and was named Indian Footballer of the 20th century by IFFHS. In 2004, he was awarded the FIFA Order of Merit, the highest honour awarded by FIFA.

Satyajit Chatterjee is an Indian former footballer and coach, who captained Mohun Bagan and represented India internationally. He served as India Captain in the year 1991. He also became the captain of bengal team and Mohun Bagan team. He has served Mohun Bagan for 14 years at a stretch. Chatterjee also is the highest goal scorer in the derby matches. He is currently the assistant general secretary of Mohun Bagan. He became the general secretary of Mohun Bagan for a very brief period of time.

The 1994–95 Asian Club Championship was the 14th edition of the annual international club football competition held in the AFC region (Asia). It determined that year's club champion of association football in Asia.

Sheoo Mewalal was an Indian footballer in Kolkata. He played as a striker and was known for his fitness, bicycle kicks, and goal-scoring abilities, especially using the rabona kick.

Jo Paul Ancheri is an Indian former professional football player who captained the Indian Football team. He was named the AIFF Player of the Year by the All India Football Federation in 1994 and 2001. He currently works as a Malayalam commentator and pundit on Star Sports Malayalam with the leading commentator Shaiju Damodaran.

Amal Dutta was a former Indian footballer, coach and football manager. Born in Calcutta, then Bengal Presidency, he is considered as the first professional football coach in the country. Shabbir Ali is an Indian football manager and former player. He was awarded the Dhyan Chand Award, the highest award in Indian sports for lifetime achievement, given by Government of India in 2011. He is the first footballer to be named for the Dhyan Chand Award.

Tarun Dey is a retired Indian football defender who represented India at the 1984 Asian Cup. He also played for East Bengal Club and was awarded the Man of the tournament of the 1985 Coca Cola Cup.
