National football team

The Gambia national football team, nicknamed The Scorpions, is the national team of the Gambia and is administered by the Gambia Football Association. They have never qualified for the World Cup. In the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations Gambia reached the second round of the competition for the first time. [6]

Men's league system

GFA League First Division

The GFA League First Division currently has twelve clubs competing in it. The most successful club is Wallidan.

GFA League Second Division

The GFA League First Division currently has ten clubs competing in it.

National Third Division League

Locally known as “Nawettan” (This word is derived from the Wolof tongue, one of several local languages, and means seasonal tournament). It is the third-highest competition in the country's national football rankings and is divided into eight mini-leagues of twenty teams each in different zones, of which all league champions from the different Local Governing Bodies (LGB) are contested in the Second Division, qualifiers and only the best three of the eight teams will proceed to battle it out in the Triangular play-offs. The emerging two best of the three teams are finally promoted to the National Second Division League.

Football stadiums

The Independence Stadium is currently the largest stadium by capacity in Gambia. The Gambia national football team use the venue for home games.

The 2007 First Division season was the 39th of the amateur competition of the first-tier football in the Gambia. The tournament was organized by the Gambian Football Association (GFA). The season began on March 1 and finished on June 24. The Real de Banjul won the tenth title after finishing with 32 points, due to financial concerns, they did not participate by the GFA in the 2008 CAF Champions League the following season. Gambia Ports Authority, winner of the 2007 Gambian Cup and qualified and competed in the 2008 CAF Confederation Cup. It was the last season featuring ten clubs, two additional clubs would be added in the following season neither the last two clubs were relegated.

The 2008 First Division season was the 40th of the amateur competition of the first-tier football in the Gambia. The competition was governed by the Gambian Football Association (GFA). The season began on February 24 and finished on July 13. The Real de Banjul won the tenth title after finishing with 39 points and qualified into the 2009 CAF Champions League the following season. Wallidan FC was also winner of the 2008 Gambian Cup, runner up was Samger, not even that club qualified and competed in the 2009 CAF Confederation Cup due to financial problems. It was the first season featuring twelve clubs, up from ten last season. The last two positions received relegation into the GFA League Second Division in the following season, they were the Gambia Ports Authority (GPA) and Interior FC.
