Forster Ice Piedmont

Forster Ice Piedmont ( 69°22′S67°0′W / 69.367°S 67.000°W / -69.367; -67.000 ) is an ice piedmont lying landward of the Wordie Ice Shelf, along the west coast of the Antarctic Peninsula. It is formed by the confluence of Airy, Seller, Fleming and Prospect Glaciers and is about 25 miles (40 km) long from north to south and 12 miles (20 km) wide.

The feature was first surveyed from the ground by the British Graham Land Expedition in 1936–37, and again in more detail by Peter D. Forster and P. Gibbs of the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS) in 1958. It was named by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee after Forster, a surveyor at Stonington Island in 1958 and at Horseshoe Island in 1960. [1]

Bertrand Ice Piedmont is an ice piedmont about 20 kilometres (11 nmi) long and from 6 to 9 kilometres wide, lying between Rymill Bay and Mikkelsen Bay on the Fallières Coast of Graham Land.

The Dufek Massif is a rugged, largely snow-covered massif 27 nautical miles long, standing west of the Forrestal Range in the northern part of the Pensacola Mountains, Antarctica.

The Airy Glacier is a glacier 20 nautical miles (37 km) long and 6 nautical miles (11 km) wide, flowing west to the northeast portion of Forster Ice Piedmont, near the west coast of the Antarctic Peninsula.

Prospect Glacier is a glacier between Kinnear Mountains and Mayer Hills, flowing north into Forster Ice Piedmont on the west coast of Antarctic Peninsula. It was first roughly surveyed in 1936 by the British Graham Land Expedition (BGLE) under Rymill. In 1954 the United Kingdom Antarctic Place-Names Committee (UK-APC) gave the name Prospect Pass to a col between Eureka Glacier and the glacier here described. During resurvey of the area by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS) in 1958, the col was found to be an indeterminate feature, while this glacier is well marked and requires a name.

Gilbert Glacier is a glacier about 20 nautical miles (37 km) long flowing south from Nichols Snowfield into Mozart Ice Piedmont, situated in northern Alexander Island, Antarctica.

Bongrain Ice Piedmont is an ice piedmont, 27 nautical miles long in a northeast–southwest direction and 12 nautical miles wide in its widest part, occupying the northwest coastal area of Alexander Island. Mount Bayonne lies to the east and Cape Vostok lies southwest of Bongrain Ice Piedmont. It was first seen from a distance and roughly surveyed by the French Antarctic Expedition, 1908–10, (FrAE) under Jean-Baptiste Charcot, and later photographed from the air by the British Graham Land Expedition on August 15, 1936, and roughly mapped from these photos. It was named by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee in 1954 for Maurice Bongrain, surveyor of the FrAE, who was responsible for the first map of this coast.

Mozart Ice Piedmont is an ice piedmont, 60 nautical miles (110 km) long-running in a NW-SE direction and 15 nautical miles (28 km) wide in its widest part, on the west coast of Alexander Island, Antarctica. Mapped from air photos taken by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition (RARE) in 1947, by Searle of the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS) in 1960. Named by the United Kingdom Antarctic Place-Names Committee (UK-APC) for Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756–1791), famous Austrian composer. Some landforms within this area are named in association with the Mozart Ice Piedmont such as Figaro Nunatak, along with a few other landforms.

Fleming Glacier is a broad glacier 25 nautical miles (46 km) long on the west side of the Antarctic Peninsula, flowing west-northwest and terminating in Forster Ice Piedmont to the east of the Wordie Ice Shelf. The glacier was charted by the British Graham Land Expedition (BGLE) under John Rymill, 1934–37, and was photographed from the air by the United States Antarctic Service on September 29, 1940. This hitherto unnamed feature was named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names in 1947 for Reverend W.L.S. Fleming, Dean of Trinity Hall, Cambridge University; also, chaplain, chief scientist, and geologist of the BGLE.

Gibbs Glacier is a glacier, 15 nautical miles (28 km) long, flowing southeast into the northern part of Mercator Ice Piedmont on the east side of the Antarctic Peninsula. This feature together with Neny Glacier, which flows northwest, occupy a transverse depression between Mercator Ice Piedmont and Neny Fjord on the west side of the Antarctic Peninsula. Gibbs Glacier was photographed from the air and first mapped by the United States Antarctic Service, 1939–41, and the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition, 1947–48. It was named by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee for Peter M. Gibbs of the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey, a surveyor at Horseshoe Island, 1957, and leader at Stonington Island, 1958, who was responsible for the first ground survey of the glacier.

Hariot Glacier is a glacier flowing northwest along the south side of Morgan Upland before turning west into the northern portion of the Wordie Ice Shelf, along the west coast of the Antarctic Peninsula. It was roughly surveyed by the British Graham Land Expedition, 1936–37, and the upper reaches were photographed from the air by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition, 1947. The glacier was surveyed from the ground by members of the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey who traveled along it in December 1958, and it was named by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee after Thomas Hariot, an English mathematician who pioneered new methods of navigation under the patronage of Sir Walter Raleigh.

The Mayer Hills are low, mainly ice-covered hills with steep north-facing slopes but rather featureless summits, to about 900 metres (3,000 ft), lying south of Forster Ice Piedmont, on the Antarctic Peninsula, between Prospect Glacier and Mount Leo.They were first roughly surveyed from the ground by the British Graham Land Expedition, 1936–37. The hills were resurveyed by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey in 1958, and were named by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee after Johann Tobias Mayer (1723–1762), a German mathematician who constructed a series of lunar tables for determining longitude, published by the British Admiralty in 1775.

Seller Glacier is a well-defined glacier, 20 nautical miles (37 km) long and 4 nautical miles (7 km) wide flowing westward into Forster Ice Piedmont, western Antarctic Peninsula, just north of Flinders Peak. Roughly surveyed by British Graham Land Expedition (BGLE), 1936–37, and resurveyed by Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS) in December 1958.

The Kelvin Crests are a line of steep-sided elevations with ice-covered cliffs 5 nautical miles (9 km) long, on the north side of Airy Glacier near its junction with Forster Ice Piedmont on the west side of the Antarctic Peninsula. Roughly surveyed by the British Graham Land Expedition in 1936–37, they were photographed from the air by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition in 1947. They were surveyed from the ground, from the southwest only, by members of the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey, in December 1958 and completely mapped by the United States Geological Survey, 1974. The feature was named by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee for William Thomson, 1st Baron Kelvin, a British physicist and engineer who made substantial improvements in the design of magnetic compasses, 1873–78 and invented the Thomson sounding machine in 1878.

Relay Hills is a group of low, ice-covered hills, mainly conical in shape, between Mount Edgell and Kinnear Mountains in western Antarctic Peninsula. First roughly surveyed from the ground by British Graham Land Expedition (BGLE), 1936–37. Photographed from the air by Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition (RARE), November 1947. Resurveyed by Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS), November 1958. The name, applied by the United Kingdom Antarctic Place-Names Committee (UK-APC), arose because both the BGLE and the FIDS sledging parties had to relay their loads through this area to the head of Prospect Glacier.

Rennick Bay is an embayment of the coastline of Antarctica at the terminus of Rennick Glacier. It is bounded on the west and east by Belousov Point and Stuhlinger Ice Piedmont.

Roberts Ice Piedmont is a large ice piedmont, 20 nautical miles (37 km) long in a north–south direction and 15 nautical miles (28 km) wide, lying to the north and northwest of Mount Calais and occupying most of the northeast corner of Alexander Island, Antarctica. It was first seen from a distance and roughly surveyed by the French Antarctic Expedition, 1908–10, under Charcot. It was photographed from the air by the British Graham Land Expedition (BGLE) on August 15, 1936, and roughly mapped from these photos. It was then named by the United Kingdom Antarctic Place-Names Committee (UK-APC) in 1955 after Brian B. Roberts (1912–78), a British ornithologist, polar specialist and leading figure in the development of Antarctic nomenclature; ornithologist, BGLE, 1934–37; Secretary, United Kingdom Antarctic Place-names Committee, 1945–74. About six nunataks are situated within the Roberts Ice Piedmont, these are Hengist Nunatak and the Horsa Nunataks. Both of these features are named after Saxon kings of England in the fifth century; however, they have no association or relation with Brian B. Roberts and the Roberts Ice Piedmont itself.

Mount Leo is an isolated mountain, 1,270 metres (4,170 ft) high, at the southeast margin of Forster Ice Piedmont on the west side of the Antarctic Peninsula. The mountain has steep rock cliffs on its south side. It was first roughly surveyed by the British Graham Land Expedition, 1936–37, was photographed from the air by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition, 1947, and resurveyed by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey, 1958. The name applied by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee is suggestive of the shape of the feature, which resembles a recumbent lion.
