Fleming Glacier

Fleming Glacier ( 69°25′S66°40′W / 69.417°S 66.667°W / -69.417; -66.667 ) is a broad glacier 25 nautical miles (46 km) long on the west side of the Antarctic Peninsula, flowing west-northwest and terminating in Forster Ice Piedmont to the east of the Wordie Ice Shelf. The glacier was charted by the British Graham Land Expedition (BGLE) under John Rymill, 1934–37, and was photographed from the air by the United States Antarctic Service on September 29, 1940. This hitherto unnamed feature was named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names in 1947 for Reverend W.L.S. Fleming, Dean of Trinity Hall, Cambridge University; also, chaplain, chief scientist, and geologist of the BGLE. [1]

George VI Sound or Canal Jorge VI or Canal Presidente Sarmiento or Canal Seaver or King George VI Sound or King George the Sixth Sound is a major bay/fault depression, 300 miles (483 km) long and mainly covered by a permanent ice shelf. It is in the shape of the letter J without any upper bar. It lines the east and south shores of Alexander Island, separating it from the vestigial, quite small, Wordie Ice Shelf and Palmer Land and the north-facing "English Coast". A quite central point of it is 71°S68°W.

King Peninsula is an ice-covered peninsula, 100 nautical miles long and 20 nautical miles wide, lying south of Thurston Island and forming the south side of Peacock Sound, Antarctica. It projects from the continental ice sheet and trends west between the Abbot Ice Shelf and Cosgrove Ice Shelf to terminate at the Amundsen Sea.

Arrowsmith Peninsula is a cape about 40 miles (64 km) long on the west coast of Graham Land, west of Forel Glacier, Sharp Glacier and Lallemand Fjord, and northwest of Bourgeois Fjord, with Hanusse Bay lying to the northwest. It was surveyed by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS) in 1955-58 and named for Edwin Porter Arrowsmith, Governor of the Falkland Islands.

Forster Ice Piedmont is an ice piedmont lying landward of the Wordie Ice Shelf, along the west coast of the Antarctic Peninsula. It is formed by the confluence of Airy, Seller, Fleming and Prospect Glaciers and is about 25 miles (40 km) long from north to south and 12 miles (20 km) wide.

Hag Pike is a conspicuous rock column, 710 metres (2,330 ft) high, on the north side of the Wordie Ice Shelf near the west coast of the Antarctic Peninsula. Together with the mountain to the north, it forms the west side of the mouth of Hariot Glacier. Hag Pike was photographed from the air by the British Graham Land Expedition, 1937, and by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition, 1947. It was surveyed by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey, 1948–50, and 1958. The name by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee is descriptive, "hag" being the stump of a tree which remains after felling.

Traffic Circle is a glacier-filled expanse 500 m high, situated south of Mount Ptolemy and medially on Antarctic Peninsula between Marguerite Bay and Mobiloil Inlet. Hub Nunatak rises from the center of the Traffic Circle. From this position, five glacial troughs radiate like the spokes of a wheel. One connects on the north with Gibbs Glacier and Neny Glacier, leading to Neny Fjord. Another connects on the west with Lammers Glacier and Windy Valley, leading to Mikkelsen Bay. A third, Cole Glacier, trends southwest along Godfrey Upland toward the Wordie Ice Shelf area. The fourth, Weyerhaeuser Glacier, trends southward toward Wakefield Highland and connects with glaciers leading westward to Wordie Ice Shelf. The fifth, Mercator Ice Piedmont, is nourished by the outflow from Weyerhaeuser, Cole and Gibbs Glaciers; it broadens as it descends eastward to the head of Mobiloil Inlet. Discovered in 1940 by members of the East Base party of the United States Antarctic Service (USAS), 1939–41, who used this system of troughs in traveling across the upland, hence the name Traffic Circle.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Flask Glacier</span> Glacier in Antarctica

Flask Glacier, is a gently-sloping glacier, 25 nautical miles long, flowing east from Bruce Plateau to enter Scar Inlet between Daggoo Peak and Spouter Peak in Graham Land, Antarctica. The lower reaches of this glacier were surveyed and photographed by the Falklands Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS) in 1947. The entire glacier was photographed by the Falkland Islands and Dependencies Aerial Survey Expedition in 1955–56, and mapped by the FIDS in 1957. It was named by the UK Antarctic Place-names Committee after the third mate on the Pequod in Herman Melville's Moby-Dick; or, The White Whale.

Carlson Glacier is a glacier, 9 nautical miles (17 km) long, flowing northward from between Mount Edgell and the Relay Hills into Wordie Ice Shelf, Fallières Coast. It was photographed from the air by the U.S. Navy in 1966, and surveyed by the British Antarctic Survey between 1970 and 1973. It was named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names after Captain Burford A. Carlson, U.S. Navy, Staff Meteorologist, Naval Support Force, Antarctica, Operation Deep Freeze, 1970 and 1971.

Confluence Cone is a small but conspicuous nunatak 4 nautical miles (7 km) southeast of Sickle Mountain, near the west coast of the Antarctic Peninsula. It was photographed from the air by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition in 1947. It was surveyed from the ground by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey in 1958, and so named by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee because of its position at the confluence of several glaciers which merge with Hariot Glacier to flow into the Wordie Ice Shelf.

Triune Peaks are three prominent, sharply pointed rock peaks, rising 12 nautical miles (22 km) northeast of Mount Balfour and overlooking Wordie Ice Shelf on the west coast of Antarctic Peninsula. First roughly surveyed from the ground by British Graham Land Expedition (BGLE), 1936–37. Photographed from the air by Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition (RARE), December 1947. Resurveyed from the ground by Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS), November 1958. The United Kingdom Antarctic Place-Names Committee (UK-APC) name derives from the number of peaks in the group.

Eureka Glacier is a broad, gently sloping glacier, 18 nautical miles (33 km) long and 17 nautical miles (31 km) wide at its mouth, which flows westward from the west side of Palmer Land into George VI Sound. It is bounded on its north side by the nunataks south of Mount Edgell, on its south side by the Traverse Mountains and Terminus Nunatak, and at its head Prospect Glacier provides a route to the Wordie Ice Shelf. It was first surveyed in 1936 by the British Graham Land Expedition (BGLE) under John Rymill and resurveyed in 1948 by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey. The name, from the ancient Greek word eureka, expresses the triumph of discovery and arose because the BGLE sledge party found their way to George VI Sound via this glacier in 1936.

Evans Glacier is a gently-sloping glacier 15 nautical miles (28 km) long and 4 nautical miles (7 km) wide, draining the southeast slopes of Travnik Buttress eastwards between Rugate Ridge and Poibrene Heights to flow into Vaughan Inlet on the east coast of Graham Land, Antarctica. It was discovered by Sir Hubert Wilkins in an aerial flight, December 20, 1928, and named "Evans Inlet" by him for E.S. Evans of Detroit. A further survey by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey in 1955 reported that this low-lying area is not an inlet, but is formed by the lower reaches of Hektoria Glacier and the feature now described.

The Goodenough Glacier is a broad sweeping glacier to the south of the Batterbee Mountains, flowing from the west shore of Palmer Land, Antarctica, into George VI Sound and the George VI Ice Shelf.

Hariot Glacier is a glacier flowing northwest along the south side of Morgan Upland before turning west into the northern portion of the Wordie Ice Shelf, along the west coast of the Antarctic Peninsula. It was roughly surveyed by the British Graham Land Expedition, 1936–37, and the upper reaches were photographed from the air by the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition, 1947. The glacier was surveyed from the ground by members of the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey who traveled along it in December 1958, and it was named by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee after Thomas Hariot, an English mathematician who pioneered new methods of navigation under the patronage of Sir Walter Raleigh.

The Kinnear Mountains are a small group of mountains, rising above 875 metres (2,870 ft), standing west of Prospect Glacier at the south margin of the Wordie Ice Shelf, on the west coast of the Antarctic Peninsula. They were discovered and roughly surveyed in 1936 by the British Graham Land Expedition (BGLE) under John Rymill. The name was proposed by members of the BGLE for Sir Norman B. Kinnear, a British ornithologist who, as a member of the staff of the British Museum, was of great assistance to the BGLE.

Seller Glacier is a well-defined glacier, 20 nautical miles (37 km) long and 4 nautical miles (7 km) wide flowing westward into Forster Ice Piedmont, western Antarctic Peninsula, just north of Flinders Peak. Roughly surveyed by British Graham Land Expedition (BGLE), 1936–37, and resurveyed by Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS) in December 1958.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Lever Glacier</span> Glacier in Antarctica

Lever Glacier is a glacier, 1.5 nautical miles (3 km) wide at its mouth and at least 6 nautical miles (11 km) long, flowing west-northwest, then west-southwest into the head of the northern arm of Beascochea Bay north of Chorul Peninsula, on the west coast of Graham Land, Antarctica. The glacier was first sighted and roughly surveyed in 1909 by the French Antarctic Expedition. It was resurveyed in 1935 by the British Graham Land Expedition (BGLE) under John Rymill, and named in 1954 for William Lever, 2nd Viscount Leverhulme, who contributed toward the cost of the BGLE.

The Traverse Mountains of Antarctica are a group of almost ice-free mountains, rising to about 1,550 metres (5,090 ft), and including McHugo Peak, Mount Noel, Mount Allan and Mount Eissinger, between Eureka Glacier and Riley Glacier, east of Warren Ice Piedmont, in western Palmer Land. These mountains were first photographed from the air on November 23, 1935, by Lincoln Ellsworth and were mapped from these photographs by W.L.G. Joerg. They were first surveyed in 1936 by the British Graham Land Expedition (BGLE) under John Rymill and resurveyed in 1948 by the Falklands Islands Dependencies Survey. The name was first used by BGLE sledging parties because the mountains are an important landmark in the overland traverse from the Wordie Ice Shelf, down Eureka Glacier, to George VI Sound.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Mount Balfour (Antarctica)</span>

Mount Balfour is a bastion-like rocky mountain, 1,010 metres (3,310 ft) high, which lies at the mouth of Fleming Glacier, close to the junction with the Wordie Ice Shelf on the west side of the Antarctic Peninsula. First roughly surveyed in 1936 by the British Graham Land Expedition under Rymill, and resurveyed by the Falklands Islands Dependencies Survey in 1948. It was named for Henry Balfour, President of the Royal Geographical Society from 1936 to 1938.
