Forward Bloc (Socialist), a break-away group from the All India Forward Bloc. FB(S) existed around 1996–1998. The party was primarily based in northern West Bengal.
In the Lok Sabha elections 1996 FB(S) had launched two candidates from West Bengal. Hiten Barman from Cooch Behar got 145 078 votes (15,56%) and Mihir Kumar Roy got 27 607 votes (3,09%) in Jalpaiguri. In the state Legislative Assembly election in West Bengal 1996, FB(S) had launched 20 candidates, who together got 123 316 votes. One candidate got elected, Kamal Guha from Dinhata (70 531 votes, 49,58%).
In the Lok Sabha elections 1998 FB(S) was with the Indian National Congress. The party launched one candidate in Cooch Behar, north West Bengal, supported by Congress. The candidate, Gobinda Roy, came second with 272 974 votes (30,16%). Later FB(S) and AIFB were reunited.
The All India Forward Bloc (AIFB) is a left-wing nationalist political party in India. It emerged as a faction within the Indian National Congress in 1939, led by Subhas Chandra Bose. The party re-established as an independent political party after the independence of India. It has its main stronghold in West Bengal. The party's current Secretary-General is Debabrata Biswas. Veteran Indian politicians Sarat Chandra Bose and Chitta Basu had been the stalwarts of the party in independent India.

The GCBDP was founded in 2006, after a split in the Greater Cooch Behar People's Association (GCPA). Ashutosh Barma is the president of the party. Bangshibadan Barman, the erstwhile jailed general secretary of the GCPA, sided with the GCBDP in the split and became a member of the new party.
Bangshi Badan Barman is an Indian politician. A leading figure in the 'Greater Cooch Behar' movement, Barman is currently jailed after a 2005 riot.

The by-election was called after the death of the incumbent parliamentarian from Calcutta South East, Dr. Syama Prasad Mukherjee. The election saw the internationally renowned barrister Radhabinod Pal defeated by a young communist barrister Sadhan Gupta.
