The Foundry Theatre is a theatre and live entertainment venue, part of The Star complex in Sydney, Australia.
The 360-seat (or 630 standing) venue was formed through a repurposing of the Sydney Lyric's under-utilised rear dock. It opened in February 2025 with a limited season of performances by Tim Minchin, with his week-long run titled First at the Foundry. [1] [2] It is owned by Foundation Theatres, which also owns the Sydney Lyric.
The venue previously was a Back of House area for the Sydney Lyric. The Sydney Lyric Theatre was originally built to accommodate large scale productions, such as repertory opera, ballet, and large musicals. The venue was designed with a large space behind the stage (in the dock) which meant multiple productions could be performed within a week, with space for two large sets to be moved and swapped in succession. This would allow for an array of programming and multiple large-scale productions operating in the venue at a time. However, since the Sydney Lyric was built, the venue has not had a repertory show, and the area was not being utilised. Because of this, Foundation Theatres planned and developed this space into a second theatre space, separate to the Sydney Lyric.
The Foundry is accessible through the Sydney Lyric Stalls Foyer, with the entrance by the Cloakroom. There is a corridor which leads through to the Foundry Foyer, with its own bar and seating areas. The Foundry Theatre shares facilities with the Sydney Lyric, such as the Cloakroom, Restrooms, and Box Office.
The Foundry is a multi-purpose space, where the seating can be tailored to the event. It consists of two levels, the Floor (Doors 1 & 2) and the Balcony (Doors 3 & 4). The Balcony contains fixed seats on a main gallery and left and right galleries. The Floor can be configured in many ways, but since the venue's opening, majority of productions have utilised the removable tiered seating in a configuration similar to an end stage theatre. However, thrust stages, cabaret seating, and continental style seating have also been used.
