Fox Premium is a group of Latin American premium pay-TV movie channels founded in 1997 by LAPTV under the name Moviecity. Fox Premium offers films in their original version, without censorship or dubbing.

Contents

It is currently owned by Walt Disney Direct-to-Consumer and International and operated by The Walt Disney Company Latin America, which also operates other basic channels, including Cinecanal and Film Zone.

History

In Latin America, LAPTV operated nine premium channels (four in HD) plus two basic channels at the time of its acquisition by Fox International Channels, who became the operator of the brand.

Several studios have struck agreements to have their content aired elsewhere. In 2012, HBO signed a deal to air Universal Studios pictures, prompting Fox to no longer air them on its premium channels. In 2014 the service, then known as Fox+, stopped broadcasting new DreamWorks Animation studio films, starting with The Croods, on its premium channels; they continue to air on the basic cable Fox channel. In 2014, Fox International Channels Latin America announced the launch of the multiplatform Fox+ Play brand and online service. On November 3 of that year, Moviecity was rebranded and restructured, and a commercial-free Fox Comedy channel launched.

In 2016, Fox+ launched in Brazil with two channels, Fox 1 and Fox Action. These channels initially aired only series, as the movie rights held in much of Latin America belonged to then-competitor Rede Telecine there.

The Fox+ Premium name was changed to Fox Premium in 2017. The channels were renamed differently in each region.

On November 27, 2020 Disney announced that they would be renaming the Fox branded channels in Latin America to Star on 22 February 2021. [1]
