Work

Franck Barthe is known for his reverse form of the Brascamp-Lieb inequality. [3] With Keith M. Ball, Shiri Artstein, and Assaf Naor, he solved Shannon's problem of the monotonic entropy increase of sums of random variables. [4]

Awards

In 2004, he received the EMS Prize (prize presentation: isoperimetric inequalities, probability measures and convex geometry) for his leading role in the application of mass-theoretical transport techniques. [2]

In 2005, he received the Grand Prix Jacques Herbrand.

Inequality (mathematics) Mathematical relation expressed by symbols < or ≤

In mathematics, an inequality is a relation which makes a non-equal comparison between two numbers or other mathematical expressions. It is used most often to compare two numbers on the number line by their size. There are several different notations used to represent different kinds of inequalities:

Cumrun Vafa

Cumrun Vafa is an Iranian-American theoretical physicist and the Hollis Professor of Mathematics and Natural Philosophy at Harvard University.

In quantum mechanics, information theory, and Fourier analysis, the entropic uncertainty or Hirschman uncertainty is defined as the sum of the temporal and spectral Shannon entropies. It turns out that Heisenberg's uncertainty principle can be expressed as a lower bound on the sum of these entropies. This is stronger than the usual statement of the uncertainty principle in terms of the product of standard deviations.

Its members are different mathematical societies in Europe, academic institutions and individual mathematicians. In quantum statistical mechanics, the von Neumann entropy, named after John von Neumann, is the extension of classical Gibbs entropy concepts to the field of quantum mechanics. For a quantum-mechanical system described by a density matrix ρ, the von Neumann entropy is

In mathematics, the Brascamp–Lieb inequality is either of two inequalities. The first is a result in geometry concerning integrable functions on n-dimensional Euclidean space . It generalizes the Loomis–Whitney inequality and Hölder's inequality. The second is a result of probability theory which gives a concentration inequality for log-concave probability distributions. Both are named after Herm Jan Brascamp and Elliott H. Lieb.

The Anna and Lajos Erdős Prize in Mathematics is a prize given by the Israel Mathematical Union to an Israeli mathematician, "with preference to candidates up to the age of 40." The prize was established by Paul Erdős in 1977 in honor of his parents, and is awarded annually or biannually. The name was changed from "Erdős Prize" in 1996, after Erdős's death, to reflect his original wishes.

In quantum information theory, Strong Subadditivity of quantum entropy (SSA) concerns the relation among the von Neumann entropies of various quantum subsystems of a larger quantum system consisting of three subsystems. It is a basic theorem in modern quantum information theory. It was conjectured by D.W. Robinson and D. Ruelle in 1966 and O. E. Lanford III and D. W. Robinson in 1968 and proved in 1973 by E.H. Lieb and M.B. Ruskai. In 2010 Ruskai found out that J. Kiefer had proved it back in 1959.
