Frazier Ridge

Frazier Ridge ( 79°9′S86°25′W / 79.150°S 86.417°W / -79.150; -86.417 Coordinates: 79°9′S86°25′W / 79.150°S 86.417°W / -79.150; -86.417 ) is a sharp ridge on the west side of Webster Glacier, extending north from Founders Escarpment to Minnesota Glacier, in the Heritage Range of Antarctica. It was named by the University of Minnesota geological party, 1963–64, for Sergeant Herbert J. Frazier, a radioman with the 62nd Transportation Detachment who was of assistance to the party. [1]

Mapped by United States Geological Survey (USGS) from surveys and U.S. Navy air photos, 1961-66. Named by Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names (US-ACAN) for Charles W. Webster, United States Antarctic Research Program (USARP) meteorologist and member of the winter party at Wilkes Station in 1963.

Founders Escarpment is a prominent escarpment located west of the Founders Peaks in the Heritage Range of Antarctica, extending from Minnesota Glacier to Splettstoesser Glacier. It was named after the nearby Founders Peaks by the University of Minnesota Geological Party, 1963–64.

Minnesota Glacier glacier in Antarctica

Minnesota Glacier is a broad glacier, about 40 nautical miles long and 5 nautical miles wide, flowing east through the Ellsworth Mountains in Antarctica, separating the Sentinel Range and the Heritage Range. It is nourished by ice from the plateau west of the mountains and by Nimitz Glacier and Splettstoesser Glacier, and merges into the larger Rutford Ice Stream at the eastern margin of the Ellsworth Mountains.

Gain Glacier glacier in Antarctica

Gain Glacier is a large glacier on the east coast of Palmer Land, Antarctica, flowing northeast from Cat Ridge and entering the Weddell Sea between Imshaug Peninsula and Morency Island. It was mapped by the United States Geological Survey in 1974, and was named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names for Louis Gain, a naturalist on the French Antarctic Expedition, 1908–10, and the author of several of the expedition reports on zoology and botany.

Inferno Ridge

Inferno Ridge is a narrow ridge, 8 miles (13 km) long, rising between Schneider Glacier and Rennell Glacier in the Heritage Range, Antarctica. It was so named by the University of Minnesota Geological Party to these mountains, 1963–64, because the area is deeply dissected and composed of black rocks.

Muir Peak

Muir Peak is a conspicuous rock peak near the middle of Frazier Ridge in the Founders Peaks, Heritage Range. It was mapped by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) from surveys and U.S. Navy air photos from 1961-66. It was named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names (US-ACAN) for Hugh M. Muir, a United States Antarctic Research Program (USARP) auroral scientist and member of the winter party at the Plateau Station in 1966.

The Porthos Range is the second range south in the Prince Charles Mountains, extending for about 30 miles in an east-to-west direction between Scylla Glacier and Charybdis Glacier. First visited in December 1956 by the ANARE southern party under W.G. Bewsher and named after Porthos, a character in Alexandre Dumas, père's novel The Three Musketeers, the most popular book read on the southern journey.

Balish Glacier glacier in Antarctica

Balish Glacier is a glacier, 18 nautical miles (33 km) long, flowing north from the Soholt Peaks to enter Splettstoesser Glacier just northeast of Springer Peak, in the Heritage Range, Ellsworth Mountains. It was mapped by the United States Geological Survey from surveys and from U.S. Navy air photos, 1961–66, and was named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names for Commander Daniel Balish, Executive Officer of U.S. Navy Squadron VX-6 during Operation Deep Freeze 1965, and Commanding Officer in 1967.

The Douglas Peaks are the group of peaks standing south of Plummer Glacier in the southeast extremity of the Heritage Range, Ellsworth Mountains. They were named by the University of Minnesota Ellsworth Mountains Party, 1962–63, for Lieutenant Commander John Douglas, a U.S. Navy LC-47 Dakota pilot who flew to the area to evacuate one of the party for emergency appendectomy.

Pipe Peak is a sharp peak on a ridge, 1,720 m, rising 1.5 nautical miles (2.8 km) north of Matney Peak in the Founders Peaks, Heritage Range. It was named so by members of the University of Minnesota Geological Party of 1963–64 because a pipe was left here after a visit to the area.

Dunbar Ridge is a narrow ridge, 10 nautical miles (18 km) long, which separates the upper reaches of Balish Glacier and Schneider Glacier in the Heritage Range. It was named by the University of Minnesota Geological Party, 1963–64, for Warrant Officer William Dunbar, maintenance officer of the 62nd Transportation Detachment, who aided the party.

The Founders Peaks are a cluster of sharp peaks and ridges located just east of Founders Escarpment and between Minnesota Glacier and Gowan Glacier, in the Heritage Range of the Ellsworth Mountains in Antarctica. The peaks were mapped by the United States Geological Survey from surveys and U.S. Navy air photos, 1961–66. The name was applied by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names is association with the name Heritage Range.

Frazier Glacier is a glacier between the Clare Range and Detour Nunatak, flowing northeast to join Mackay Glacier east of Pegtop Nunatak, in Victoria Land, Antarctica. It was named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names in 1964 for Lieutenant W.F. Frazier, officer in charge at Byrd Station, 1963.

Henderson Glacier glacier in Antarctica

Henderson Glacier is a glacier about 7 nautical miles long in the Enterprise Hills of the Heritage Range, Antarctica. It flows northeast from Schoeck Peak and Hoinkes Peak to enter Union Glacier just east of Mount Rossman. Henderson Glacier was mapped by the United States Geological Survey from surveys and U.S. Navy air photos 1961–66, and was named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names for Felix E. Henderson, a United States Antarctic Research Program meteorologist at Eights Station in 1965.

Mapple Glacier glacier in Antarctica

Mapple Glacier is a narrow glacier 15 nautical miles (28 km) long, flowing eastward between Arkovna Ridge and Stevrek Ridge in the Aristotle Mountains of Antarctica to enter Sexaginta Prista Bay on the east side of Graham Land. It lies 2 nautical miles (4 km) north of Melville Glacier and is separated from it by a line of small peaks. The glacier was surveyed by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey in 1961, and was named by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee after Father Mapple, the whalemen's Nantucket priest in Herman Melville's Moby-Dick.

Sanctuary Glacier is a glacier almost completely encircled by the Gothic Mountains. It drains west between Outlook Peak and Organ Pipe Peaks into Scott Glacier. Mapped by United States Geological Survey (USGS) from surveys and U.S. Navy aerial photographs, 1960-64. The descriptive name was proposed by Edmund Stump, leader of a United States Antarctic Research Program (USARP)-Arizona State University geological party which established a base camp on the glacier in January 1981.

Smith Ridge is a ridge 4 nautical miles (7 km) long, lying 1 nautical mile (1.9 km) west of Frazier Ridge in the Founders Peaks, Heritage Range. Named by the University of Minnesota Geological Party to these mountains, 1963–64, for Carl W. Smith who served that season as helicopter engine technical representative with the 62nd Transportation Detachment.

Splettstoesser Glacier glacier in Antarctica

Splettstoesser Glacier is a glacier, 35 nautical miles long, draining from the plateau just south of Founders Escarpment and flowing east-northeast through the Heritage Range to the south of Founders Peaks and Anderson Massif to enter the Minnesota Glacier. Named by the University of Minnesota Ellsworth Mountains Party which explored the area in 1961-62 for John F. Splettstoesser, geologist with that party.

Rennell Glacier glacier in Antarctica

Rennell Glacier is a glacier, 10 nautical miles long, in the Pioneer Heights, Heritage Range. It drains northwest, to the east of Inferno Ridge, to join Splettstoesser Glacier. Named by the University of Minnesota Geological Party to these mountains, 1963–64, for K.P. Rennell, biologist with the party.

Van Reeth Glacier is a tributary glacier about 20 nautical miles (37 km) long, draining westward to Scott Glacier between Mounts Blackburn and Bowlin, in the Queen Maud Mountains. It was discovered in December 1934 by the Byrd Antarctic Expedition geological party under Quin Blackburn, and was named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names (US-ACAN) for Commander Eugene W. Van Reeth, a pilot with U.S. Navy Squadron VX-6 in Antarctica during Operation Deep Freeze 1966, 1967 and 1968, and squadron commander in 1969. Later in his career Commander Van Reeth was promoted to captain, and eventually became the commanding officer of Operation Deep Freeze Task Force 43 in the 1970s.
