The Freight Subdivision is a railway line in the New York. It runs from Schenectady, New York, to Mechanicville, New York. It was built by the Delaware and Hudson Railway in 1881 as a freight-only bypass, connecting with the main line of the Boston, Hoosac Tunnel and Western Railway. Today, Canadian Pacific Kansas City owns the line.

History

The Boston, Hoosac Tunnel and Western Railway was incorporated in 1877 to build a new railway line linking western New York with Boston, Massachusetts, via the Hoosac Tunnel. The western terminus of the new line, which opened in 1879, was Mechanicville, New York. [1] [2] The Delaware and Hudson Railway had two lines in the vicinity: the Rensselaer and Saratoga Railroad, which ran northwest from Albany to Ballston Spa via Mechanicville; and the Saratoga and Schenectady Railroad, which ran north between Schenectady and Saratoga Springs via Ballston Spa.

To link these lines and eliminate running via Ballston Spa, the D&H constructed a 9-mile (14 km) line between "Coons", west of Mechanicville, and East Glenville, New York. The line opened in December 1881. [1] [3] In 1884, the Boston, Hoosac Tunnel and Western Railway built further west to Rotterdam Junction. [lower-alpha 1] This line ran parallel to the D&H line between Mechanicville and "Crescent", 9 miles (14 km) to the west, and the two lines were operated together as a single unit. [6]

In 1964 the D&H built a 1.1-mile (1.8 km) connection northwest from the line to the former Saratoga and Schenectady Railroad line and abandoned the former Rensselaer and Saratoga Railroad between Mechanicville and Ballston Spa. The D&H's remaining passenger trains, including the Laurentian , were re-routed over the freight bypass. [7]

Operations

As of 2023 Canadian Pacific Kansas City, successor to the D&H, includes in the "Freight Subdivision" the entirety of the 1881 freight bypass, the former Saratoga and Schenectady Railroad from East Glenville to Schenectady, and the former Rensselaer and Saratoga Railroad between Coons and Mechanicville. Amtrak's Adirondack uses the western end of the line. [8]

The Adirondack is an intercity rail passenger train operated daily, partially along the Empire Corridor, by Amtrak between New York City and Montreal. Trains take approximately 11 hours to travel the 381 miles (613 km) route through the scenic Hudson Valley and along the eastern border of the Adirondack Mountains. Operation of the Adirondack is supported by the New York State Department of Transportation and Via Rail. Service was suspended in March 2020 due to the closure of the Canadian/American border in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, resumed in spring 2023, and suspended again at the end of June 2023 because of track conditions in Canada.

The Saratoga and Schenectady Railroad was incorporated on February 16, 1831. The founders were Henry Walton, John Clarke, William A. Langworthy, John H. Steele, Miles Beach, Gideon W. Davison, and Rockwell Putnam. The line was opened from Schenectady to Ballston Spa on July 12, 1832, and extended to Saratoga Springs in 1833 for a total of 20.8 miles (33.5 km). The Rensselaer and Saratoga Railroad leased the line on January 1, 1851, and the lease was reassigned to the Delaware and Hudson Canal Company on May 1, 1871.

Pan Am Southern, LLC is a freight railroad jointly owned by Norfolk Southern Railway (NS) and CSX Corporation subsidiary Pan Am Railways (PAR). After the June 2022 acquisition of PAR by CSX, PAS will be independently operated by the Berkshire and Eastern Railroad, a subsidiary of Genesee & Wyoming. PAS owns trackage known as the Patriot Corridor between Albany, New York, and the Boston, Massachusetts, area, utilizing rail lines formerly owned by the Fitchburg Railroad and later on the Boston and Maine Railroad. The Boston, Hoosac Tunnel and Western Railway was a railway company that operated in the states of New York and Vermont in the 1880s. At its peak it controlled a 61-mile (98 km) network centered on Mechanicville, New York. Plans to extend the line west to Buffalo, New York, on Lake Ontario, were never realized, and the Fitchburg Railroad, a predecessor of the Boston and Maine Railroad, acquired control of the company in 1887 and merged it in 1892.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Zim Smith Trail</span>

The Zim Smith Trail is the main multi-use trail of a network of trails in Saratoga County, New York. Extending twelve miles, it connects the cities and towns of Mechanicville, Halfmoon, Clifton Park, Round Lake Village, Malta and Ballston Spa. The trail is the route of the former Delaware & Hudson Railroad, originally the Rensselaer & Saratoga Railroad which was completed in 1836. It is the only trail in New York state to be designated a national recreation trail by the U.S. Department of Interior and National Park Service.

The Canadian Subdivision is a railway line in the state of New York. It runs north–south along the west side of Lake Champlain from the vicinity of Schenectady, New York, to Rouses Point, New York, on the border with Quebec. While the oldest part of the line was built in 1832–1833, the majority was constructed between 1869 and 1876. Once part of the Delaware and Hudson Railway main line, today Canadian Pacific Kansas City owns the line. Amtrak's Adirondack operates over the full length, providing daily service between New York City and Montreal.
