N.W.A was an American hip hop group whose members were among the earliest and most significant popularizers and controversial figures of the gangsta rap subgenre, and the group is widely considered one of the greatest and most influential groups in the history of hip hop music.
Straight Outta Compton is the debut studio album by rap group N.W.A, which, led by Eazy-E, formed in Los Angeles County's City of Compton in early 1987. Released by his label, Ruthless Records, on August 8, 1988, the album was produced by N.W.A members Dr. Dre, DJ Yella, and Arabian Prince, with lyrics written by N.W.A members Ice Cube and MC Ren along with Ruthless rapper The D.O.C. Not merely depicting Compton's street violence, the lyrics repeatedly threaten to lead it by attacking peers and even police. The track "Fuck tha Police" drew an FBI agent's warning letter, which aided N.W.A's notoriety, N.W.A calling itself "the world's most dangerous group."

Story of the Year is an American rock band formed in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1995 under the name 67 North. The band eventually changed their name to Big Blue Monkey in 1998, and then subsequently changed it again to Story of the Year in 2002, after the release of their EP titled Story of the Year on the indie label Criterion Records. At the time, they claimed they discovered that a blues group named Big Blue Monkey had already existed. Later, on their podcast "Page Avenue Crew", they clarified that they just didn't care for the name and made up the excuse of another band having the same name.

In 2021, Rolling Stone re-ranked the song at number 190 in an updated list.

The East Coast–West Coast hip hop rivalry was a feud between artists and fans of the East Coast hip hop and West Coast hip hop scenes in the United States, especially from the mid-1990s. Focal points of the feud were East Coast–based rapper The Notorious B.I.G. and his New York City–based label, Bad Boy Records, and West Coast–based rapper Tupac Shakur and his Los Angeles-based label, Death Row Records. The feud culminated in the murders of both rappers in drive-by shootings. Although several suspects have been identified, both murders remain unsolved.
"Fuck the Millennium", sometimes spelled "***k the Millennium", is a protest song by the band 2K—Bill Drummond and Jimmy Cauty—better known as the Justified Ancients of Mu Mu or the KLF. The song was inspired musically by Jeremy Deller's "Acid Brass" project, where a traditional brass band plays acid house classics; these include the KLF's "What Time Is Love?". They were also inspired topically by the then-forthcoming end of the second millennium and the plans to celebrate it.

Denise "Dee" Barnes is an American rapper and former Fox television personality who performed in the West Coast Hip Hop female duo Body & Soul and hosted a radio show on KDAY, prior to gaining wider fame as the host of Fox’s hip hop show Pump It Up!. In 1990, she was physically assaulted by Dr. Dre at a rap industry party. Barnes filed charges. Dre pled no contest. Despite being the victim, she was blacklisted from the rap industry. A public apology came years later but did not account specifically to the targets of his abuse, including artist Mi'chel'le: “I apologize to the women I’ve hurt. I deeply regret what I did and know that it has forever impacted all of our lives.” Barnes plans on writing a biography of her life, according to a 2019 VIBE Magazine article. Barnes is one of many Black women in hip-hop that experienced sexual harassment at the hands of men they knew and has often been dismissed, upon Barnes' coming out, rallies for violence against women started following.
Slap a Ham Records was an independent label from San Francisco owned and operated by Chris Dodge, bassist of the band Spazz as well as others. The label is generally seen as a highly influential entity within the hardcore punk scene in California during the 1980s and 1990s, for the label issued releases by groups such as Crossed Out, Man Is the Bastard, Capitalist Casualties, among others. It is also considered to have played an important role in the development of powerviolence, a dissonant style of hardcore that is similar to grindcore and thrashcore. The label also issued early releases by well-known groups such as the Melvins and Eyehategod. The label lasted for about 13 years, officially shutting down in 2002. According to Dodge, this was due because of the September 11 attacks; "After the attacks, everyone stopped spending money" and as a result, Slap a Ham faced stagnate commerce, causing Dodge to go into debt.
