Background

Piri met Tommy Villiers in 2020, [1] after matching on Tinder, finding his band on Twitter, finding his Instagram account, [2] and asking him if she could "shoot [her] shot", [3] in that order. [2] He produced Piri's first two singles, "It's a Match" and "Soft Spot", [4] before forming Piri & Tommy with her. [5] On 11 January 2023, Clash announced that Piri and Tommy had broken up, but remained friends. [6]

Release

On 28 April 2023, Piri featured on "Fumble" by Sudley, [5] a Bristol-based drum 'n' bass producer [7] who had previously produced a bootleg of their earlier single "Beachin" on 7 July 2022, [8] and an official remix of "On & On" on 7 October 2022. [5] The song was released on DnB Allstars Records, [5] and contains a rap verse. [9] A censored version of the song premiered the day before on Clara Amfo's Radio 1's Future Sounds; she told the programme that "the idea with "Fumble" was to make a breakup song that had a more empowering and positive spin on it", and that the song was specifically written about "that feeling a few weeks after a breakup, where you're kind of like, 'Damn, I'm actually a catch, and my ex is the one missing out.'" [10]

The day after release, the song was named BBC Radio 1's "Hottest Record in the World" on Radio 1's Dance Anthems with Charlie Hedges. [11] The Mexican radio station XHUIA-FM complimented the song's raver vibe and catchy beat. [9] Piri would perform the song at the 27 May 2023 Radio 1 Big Weekend. [12]
