Background

'nice 2 me’ really came straight from the heart. Relationships can be so complicated but at the end of the day all you really want is to be treated nicely! Although it seems obvious I don’t feel like this sentiment is expressed enough and I’m sure a lot of people can relate. We really wanted to capture some DJ Marky-esque Brazilian energy in this track, and Tommy smashed it with the guitar part and percussion. ‘nice 2 me’ is a summer banger for all the lovers who just wanna have a nice time!

Piri [1]

On 11 January 2023, Clash reported that Piri and Tommy Villiers had split up, but remained friends, would release previously recorded music, and planned to work together in the future. [2] They then featured on MJ Cole's "Feel It", which was credited to "MJ Cole ft. Piri & Tommy Villiers", released their own single, "Updown", and then on 24 May 2023 they released "Nice 2 Me", [3] which speaks of wanting to be treated nicely in a relationship, and was an attempt at mimicking DJ Marky. [1] The song samples the Amen break. [4]

Reception

Upon release, BBC Radio 1 announced it as that day's "Hottest Record". [5] Reviewing a performance of the song as part of a Froge.tour concert, Brighton & Hove News complimented its "shuffling beat", [6] while Notion complimented the song's "acoustic-infused liquid DnB beat" and Villiers' "infectious 'cry in the club' amen breaks", and noted that Piri "effortlessly flow[ed] between rap verses and harmonic hooks". [4] Thefortyfive.com described the song as "sugary", "a weightless summer melody that radiates warmth and golden hour sunshine", and noted that Piri sang "I try not to think about the bad times / But am I just pretendin' that it's alright? 'Cause you treat me so different every night" "atop bossa nova beats and skittering drum 'n' bass". [7] DIY complimented the song's lyrics, saying that "there's no beating around the bush" with them, and that the "sugary chorus" was "atop skittering beats, in what's sure to be a massive singalong anthem this summer". [8] In addition, The Times described the song as a "colli[sion]" of "jungle and bossa nova" that was "at once as light as air and as insistent as a final demand". [9]

Music video and other uses

On 24 May 2023, the pair released a lyric video for the single, [10] and on 27 May 2023, Piri performed the song at Radio 1 Big Weekend, where it featured a burlesque routine. [11] In addition, "Nice 2 Me" featured on Spotify's "Planet Rave" playlist, [12] described in October 2021 by Pitchfork as "the platform’s fastest-growing playlist for the 18-24 demographic". [13] On 20 July 2023, the pair released a music video, which featured pole dancing. [14] On 13 August 2023, the song was played on Sunday Brunch, [15] and on 20 September 2023, it was announced that it would appear on the soundtrack for EA Sports FC 24. [16]
