Gabriel Morales (born June 21, 1984) is an American Major League Baseball (MLB) umpire. He wears uniform number 47.
A native of Santa Clara, California, Morales began umpiring Minor League Baseball games in 2009. [1] He made his debut in 2014 and was one of four umpires promoted to the full-time staff in February 2017, upon the retirements of Bob Davidson, John Hirschbeck, Jim Joyce, and Tim Welke. [2]
During the decisive game five of the 2021 National League Division Series between the San Francisco Giants and Los Angeles Dodgers on October 14, 2021, Morales ruled that Giants' batter Wilmer Flores had swung on a pitch, which resulted in a strikeout, ending the game and the series. [3] [4]
In baseball or softball, a strikeout occurs when a batter accumulates three strikes during a time at bat. It means the batter is out, unless the third strike is not caught by the catcher and the batter reaches first base safely as a result. A strikeout is a statistic recorded for both pitchers and batters, and is usually denoted by the letter K, or sometimes by the initialism SO. A "strikeout looking"—in which the batter does not swing and the third strike is called by the umpire—may be denoted by an inverted K.
Juan Antonio Marichal Sánchez, nicknamed "the Dominican Dandy", is a Dominican former right-handed pitcher who played 16 seasons in Major League Baseball from 1960 to 1975, mostly with the San Francisco Giants.
