Gabriel Bradley is a former Gaelic footballer from Glenullin, County Londonderry, Northern Ireland. Bradley played for the Derry county team in the 1970s and 1980s. He won two Ulster Senior Football Championships with the county. Bradley played club football for John Mitchel's Glenullin and won the Derry Senior Football Championship with the club.

He was a very versatile player who could play in defence, midfield or in the half forward line. [1]

Background

Bradley comes from a Glenullin family with a strong footballing background. Two of his uncles, James and Paddy Rafferty had played for Derry. [1] Bradley went to school at St Columb's College in Derry City. [1] St Columb's at the time was the county's top football nursery and here he played under coaches such as Father Ignatius McQuillan and Raymond Gallagher. [1]

When Bradley won the Derry Championship with Glenullin in 1985, five of his brothers were also on the team. [1] His cousin Colm Rafferty won the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship with Derry in 1993. Bradley's brother Liam currently manages Antrim and his sons (Gabriel's nephews) Paddy and Eoin are important players on the current Derry team. [1] When Glenullin won the Derry Championship in 2007, nearly half the team were related to Gabriel Bradley. [1]

Playing career

Inter-county

Bradley played for the Derry Minor and Under 21 before progressing to the Senior side. He made his Senior inter-county debut against Armagh in 1975. That year Derry won the Ulster Senior Football Championship beating Down in the final, with Bradley playing at left corner back. Derry were beaten by Dublin in the subsequent All-Ireland semi-final.

Derry reached the 1976 National Football League final, but were defeated by Dublin by a point, where Bradley was left half forward. Derry also retained their Ulster Championship title that year. They were defeated by Kerry in the All-Ireland semi-final. Derry reached their third Ulster final in a row in 1977, but were beaten by Armagh. Bradley made his last appearance for Derry in 1984, against Tyrone. [1]

Club

Bradley won a Derry Intermediate Championship medal with Glenullin in 1977. [1] Eight years later he was an important part of the side that won the 1985 Derry Senior Football Championship [1] - the club's first Derry Championship in 57 years. [1] Glenullin named Bradley Player of the Year in 1986, [1] and he was named Clubman of the Year in 1988. [1]

In 1989 while travelling to the All-Ireland Hurling Championship final, he was involved in a serious road accident that ended his 17-year-long club career. [1] Despite having a severely damaged leg, he went back to drag his two friends from a burning car. [1]

Bradley was also chairman of the Glenullin club in the late 1980s. [1]

Damian Cassidy is a former Gaelic football manager and former player for the Derry county team in the 1980s and 1990s, who was part of the county's 1993 All-Ireland Championship winning side, starting at left half forward. He also won two Ulster Senior Championship medals, three National League titles, and a range of under-age inter-county medals with the county. Cassidy played his club football for Bellaghy Wolfe Tones and won five Derry Championships and the 1994 Ulster Senior Club Football Championships with the club. For both club and county he usually played as a forward. Cassidy was also a talented hurler.

Liam Bradley, commonly known by his nickname Baker, is a Gaelic football manager and former player for Glenullin and the Derry county team. He twice managed the senior Antrim county team between October 2008 and August 2012 and from November 2013 until 2014.

Sean O'Connell was a Gaelic football manager and player who featured for the Derry county team in the late 1950s, 1960s and 1970s and was on the Derry side that finished runners-up to Dublin in the 1958 All-Ireland Championship – winning an Ulster Championship with the county that year, and three more in 1970, 1975 and 1976. For his performances in the 1967 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship, O'Connell won a Cú Chulainn Award.

Paddy O'Rourke is an Irish Gaelic football manager and former player. He played football with his local club Burren and was a member of the Down senior inter-county team from the 1970s until the 1990s. O'Rourke captained Down to the All-Ireland title in 1991. He managed the Armagh senior football team from 2009 top 2012. Paddy's son Pauric was part of the Down minor team in 2008 and Under-21 team in 2010.
