The Gallant Bob Stakes is a Grade II American Thoroughbred horse race for three years olds, over a distance of six furlongs on the dirt held annually in September at Parx Casino and Racing racetrack in Bensalem, Pennsylvania. The event currently carries a purse of $300,000.

History

The race was inaugurated in 1979 [1] as the Gallant Bob Handicap [2] after the horse Gallant Bob [3] who was the first Pennsylvania based horse to earn an Eclipse Award in 1975. [2] The inaugural even was run with conditions of four year olds and older and was held in January. [4]

The event had a lengthy absence of 11 years of twelve years between 1987 and 1998 and when the event resumed in 1999 conditions were changed that the event was only for three year olds. [1]

In 2013 the event was upgraded to a Grade III and in 2019 the event was upgraded to a Grade II. [5]

Ruler on Ice is a Thoroughbred racehorse that won the 2011 Belmont Stakes. He was bred and foaled in Kentucky by Brandywine Farm in partnership with Liberation Farm on. He is a chestnut gelding sired by Hill 'n' Dale Farms' Roman Ruler out of the Saratoga Six-bred mare, Champagne Glow. The colt was consigned as lot 988 at the 2009 Keeneland September yearling auction, where he was purchased by George and Lori Hall for $100,000. Ruler on Ice only won one minor race after winning the Belmont and was retired from racing in July 2014. He lives in Versailles, Kentucky at the farm of his owners.
