Gamal Abdul Nasir Zakaria (born 22 June 1965) is an Indonesian lecturer and writer based in Brunei.

Zakaria was born on 22 June 1965 in Kelapapati, Bengkalis, as the four child and third son of the seven children of Zakaria bin Muhammad Amin (1913–2006), an ulama, and his second wife, Siti Zainab binti Kimpal (1935–2014), an actress. [1] He was named after Gamal Abdel Nasser and has Malay descent, and speak Coastal Malay dialect. Her brothers were Zulkarnain and Nukman, and her sisters were Rinie, Rita, Nida, and Sri. [1] He also had three half-brothers, Nashruddin, Azra'ie, and Syakrani, and four half sisters, Aminah, Zaharah, Ulfah, and Hanim from his father previous marriage. [2]

Zakaria went to Sultan Syarif Kasim II State Islamic University and graduated in 1985, followed by master degree from International Islamic University Malaysia majoring in Arabic teaching to non Arabic speakers, in 1995. [3] He earned his Ph.D. from National University of Malaysia in 1999. [4]

Career

Zakaria started his career as an Islamic and Arabic literature lecturer at Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah Institute of Education at Universiti Brunei Darussalam. [1] [5] He focuses on research on youth development, modern Islamic education, and the professionalism of teaching staff. [4] He published two books, The Theory and Practice of Teacher Professional Development: An Islamic Perspective (2019) and Permisalan Dalam Al-Quran (2019) which was launched at Frankfurt Book Fair in October 2019. [4] Permisalan Dalam Al-Qur'an won as the Best Islamic Book at Anugerah Buku Negara in 2021 and Best Malay Scientific Book at Malaysian Scientific Publication Council in 2023 which was held by Ministry of Education. In August 2021, Zakaria became a speaker at International Conference on Science, Humanities, and Operations Management (ICoSSHOM) which was held at Muhammadiyah Sinjai University from 13 until 15 August. [8]

In October 2023, he participated and became a speaker at International Tarbiyah Suska Conference Series (TSCS) which was held at Sultan Syarif Kasim II State Islamic University from 4 until 5 October and discussing about Education And Character Building In Society 5.0 Era. [9] On 16 November 2023, Zakaria attended and helped organize the 1st International Conference and Social Sciences event which was held at the Aryaduta Hotel in Pekanbaru. [10]

Personal life

Zakaria is married to Salwa Mahalle, a lecturer, in Brunei on 13 March 2000, and has had two sons and two daughters. [11] As of 2023, he resided in Brunei. [5] [11]

The Sultanate of Siak Sri Indrapura, often called Sultanate of Siak, was a kingdom that was located in the Siak Regency, Riau from 1722 to 1949. It was founded by Raja Kechil, who was from the Johor Kingdom, after he failed to seize the throne of the Sultanate of Johor. The polity expanded in the 18th century to encompass much of eastern Sumatra as it brought various communities under its control through warfare and control of trade between the interior of Sumatra and the Melaka Straits. The Dutch colonial state signed a series of treaties with Siak rulers in the 19th century, which reduced the area of state influence to the Siak River. An-Nur Great Mosque is a mosque located in Pekanbaru, Riau, Indonesia. Construction began in 1963 and was completed in 1968. The mosque can accommodate about 4,500 worshipers. Haji Zakaria bin Muhammad Amin was an Indonesian ulama, politician, writer, and patriarch of the Zakaria family from Bangkinang, Kampar. He was an ulama in Bengkalis Regency, and was the first head of Islamic religious administration in Bengkalis. Zakaria was the son in law of Tuan Guru Haji Ahmad, the first ulama of Bengkalis Regency, who along with him founded Al-Khairiyah, the first Islamic boarding school in Bengkalis Regency, in 1937, and teaching there until 1943. He was also the founder of MDTA Mahbatul Ulum, an Islamic school made as successor for Al-Khairiyah, in 1963, and Al-Ishlah Mosque, to support the teaching activities at MDTA Mahbatul Ulum, which both operates until now. In 2023, Zakaria was posthumously awarded the title of Regional Hero of Riau by the Riau Regional People's Representative Council. He became the subject of Zakaria: Pahlawan Dalam Kenangan, a documentary film from the thanksgiving ceremony of his regional hero awarding.

Rita Puspa Zakaria, also known as Rita Puspita, is an Indonesian civil servant, lecturer, teacher, activist, and actress who currently serving as the Vice Director of the Bengkalis Regional General Hospital and Fourth Deputy Chairman of Empowerment of Family Welfare in Bengkalis Regency, Riau, Indonesia. She is known as a women leader in Bengkalis who made various contributions in public health by inventing programs to improve community nutrition, reduce maternal mortality rates, and reduce children stunting. Zakaria is the daughter of ulama Zakaria bin Muhammad Amin and actress Siti Zainab, and is the younger sister of educator Gamal Abdul Nasir Zakaria.

MDTA Mahbatul Ulum is a public Islamic school for children and young adults in Bengkalis, Indonesia. It is located on Jalan Gerilya, Kelapapati. The school was established by Zakaria bin Muhammad Amin in 1963 as the successor to the Al-Khairiyah Islamic boarding school which was previously founded by him and Tuan Guru Haji Ahmad in 1937. As of 2020, the school curriculum is managed by Ministry of Religious Affairs.

Her career were cut short after her marriage when she decided to retired for taking care of his husband children from previous marriage.

Muhammad Wisra Okarianto is an Indonesian Islamic judge and civil servant. He served as administrator at Bengkalis Regency Regional Secretariat. He is the grandson of ulama Zakaria bin Muhammad Amin and the great-grandson of ulama Tuan Guru Haji Ahmad.

Al-Ishlah Mosque is a mosque in Kelapapati, in the village of Bengkalis, Indonesia. It was founded by Zakaria bin Muhammad Amin to provide Islamic education as the successor of MDTA Mahbatul Ulum.

Ibrahim bin Ismail (1917–2005), also known as Usu Ibrahim, was an Indonesian Shafi'i school ulama from Bengkalis. He was known as the spreader of the Tarekat Sayyidil Mursalin in Bengkalis, a religious practice that comes from the book Maslaku Ar-Raghibin fi Thoriqoti Al-Sayyidi Al-Mursalin written by Ahmad Khatib al-Minangkabawi.
