Gandhi Krishna is an Indian film director who has worked on Tamil films. After beginning his career as an assistant to Shankar, he has made commercially and critically successful films. [2] [3]

Career

After apprenticing under Shankar in Indian (1996), Gandhi Krishna approached writer Sujatha to allow him to adapt his novel Pirivom Sandhipom into a screenplay. Sujatha refused the offer citing that film makers had often misinterpreted his novels' characters, so the plan was consequently dropped. [4] Gandhi Krishna then began work on his first venture, a social drama film titled Engineer in late 1997. [5] Touted as a big-budget project, the film starred Arvind Swamy and Madhuri Dixit and was based on a story regarding the building of a dam project in South India. [6] [7] The film ran into financial trouble after eighty percent of the film's shoot had been completed and has since remained unreleased. [8] In 1999, director Shankar, the mentor of Gandhi Krishna, attempted to revive the project through his production house but was unsuccessful in doing so. [9] A further attempt was made to restart the project with Suriya in the lead role in 2004, but it also failed to materialize. [10]

Subsequently, Gandhi Krishna made his directorial debut through the art film Nila Kaalam (2001), a coming-of-age television film starring children. Based on Sujatha's novel Andru Un Arugil, the film won a National Film Award and received critical acclaim, with a reviewer from The Hindu stating the film "is a must for one and all" and that Gandhi Krishna tackles the "theme confidently". [11] He next made the romantic thriller, Chellamae (2004), featuring newcomer Vishal in the lead role alongside Reemma Sen and Bharath. The basic premise of the plot was taken from a line from the Ramayana, with Bharath portraying the antagonist. [12] [13] Unlike his first venture, Chellamae was made to entertain audiences and prompted a positive response from critics as well as at the box office. [14]

Gandhi Krishna finally ended up making Pirivom Sandhipom from mid-2007 as Ananda Thandavam (2009), starring rookie actors Siddharth Venugopal, Tamannaah Bhatia and Rukmini Vijayakumar. [4] [15] Despite being promoted heavily prior to release, the film garnered negative reviews and performed poorly at the box office. A critic from Rediff.com noted "though its scores in parts for sensitivity, the overall effect is rather lacking in enthusiasm". [16] [17] In 2012, it was reported that Gandhi Krishna had taken over as the director of the fantasy film Karikalan from L. I. Kannan. The film, which starred Vikram, Zarine Khan and Radhika Apte, had been in production since 2010 but has failed to restart even after Gandhi Krishna's appointment. [18] [19]

The film centres on a disillusioned everyman, whose frustration at what he sees as increasing social apathy and public negligence leads to a split personality that attempts to improve the system. Vikram stars in the main lead as Ambi, an idealistic, law-abiding lawyer who has multiple personality disorder and develops two other identities: a fashion model named Remo and a murderous vigilante named Anniyan. Sadha, Vivek, Nedumudi Venu, Nassar and Prakash Raj feature in supporting roles.

Ananda Thandavam is a 2009 Tamil-language romantic drama film, an adaptation of Sujatha's serialized novel Pirivom Santhippom. The film was directed by A. R. Gandhi Krishna and produced by V. Ravichandran of Aascar Films. The music was composed by G. V. Prakash Kumar with editing by V. T. Vijayan and cinematography by Jeeva Shankar.

S. Rangarajan, better known by his allonymSujatha, was an Indian author, novelist and screenwriter who wrote in Tamil. He authored over 100 novels, 250 short stories, ten books on science, ten stage plays, and a slim volume of poems. He was one of the most popular authors in Tamil literature, and a regular contributor to topical columns in Tamil periodicals such as Ananda Vikatan, Kumudam and Kalki. He had a wide readership, and served for a brief period as the editor of Kumudam, and has also written screenplays and dialogues for several Tamil films.

Nila Kaalam is a 2001 Indian Tamil-language television film directed by Gandhi Krishna. The film stars Roja and several child artists. It was also released at film festivals and child artiste Master Udayaraj went on to win National Film Award for Best Child Artist. The film is based on Sujatha's novel Andru Un Arukil.

Siddharth Venugopal is a former Indian actor and Assistant director who has appeared in Tamil films. He made his debut in Gandhi Krishna's romantic musical Ananda Thandavam (2009), also playing a supporting role alongside Vijay Antony in Naan (2012).

<i>Poojai</i> 2014 Indian Tamil-language action film

Poojai (transl. Prayer) is a 2014 Indian Tamil-language action film directed by Hari and produced by Vishal. The film stars Vishal, alongside Shruti Haasan, Sathyaraj, Radhika Sarathkumar, Mukesh Tiwari, Awadesh Mishra and Soori. Yuvan Shankar Raja composed the music, while cinematography and editing were handled by Priyan and V. T. Vijayan.

Manikandan is an Indian actor who appears in Tamil language films. He has acted in films including Boys (2003) and Kicha Vayasu 16 (2005). In 2024, he had a career resurgence with Maharaja (2024).
