Garnell W. Whitfield,Jr. is the former fire commissioner of the Buffalo Fire Department in Buffalo,New York and a social justice advocate. He received national attention for spreading awareness of white supremacy and domestic terrorism after his mother,Ruth Whitfield,was killed in the 2022 Buffalo shooting.
He is currently running to become Mayor of Buffalo,which will be decided by the 2025 Buffalo mayoral election.
Whitfield was born April 1957 in Buffalo,New York to Ruth Whitfield and Garnell W. Whitfield,Sr. [3]
He started working as a firefighter in the Buffalo Fire Department in 1984. Throughout his career,he served as the city fire departments's chief fire administrator,deputy commissioner of administration and deputy commissioner of emergency services. [4]
In January 2010,Mayor of Buffalo Byron Brown appointed Whitfield as the commissioner of the Buffalo Fire Department after the resignation of commissioner Michael Lombardo. [5] [6] He was unanimously approved by the Buffalo Common Council. [5]
In March 2016,Buffalo firefighters issued a vote of no confidence in Whitfield. [7] He then retired from the Buffalo Fire Department in 2017. [8] Governor Andrew Cuomo then appointed Whitfield as the assistant commissioner of the New York Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Services,where he served from September 2017 until September 2019. His mother,Ruth Whitfield,was the oldest victim of the 2022 Buffalo shooting that occurred at a Tops Friendly Markets supermarket in the East Side neighborhood of Buffalo. He said he had been calling his mother and trying to locate her,until he found her car in the parking lot of the Tops Supermarket where the shooting occurred. [10]
She was 86 years old when the shooting occurred. Her funeral was attended by Vice President Kamala Harris and her husband,Douglas Emhoff. The Vice President met with Whitfield before his mother's funeral service. [11]
In an effort to raise awareness of white supremacy and domestic terrorism in the United States,Whitfield testified in the United States Senate Judiciary Committee. [12] [13]
Whitfield appeared on news outlets after the shooting alongside prominent civil rights attorney Benjamin Crump,who he retained for legal counsel in the wake of shooting. [14] [15]
In June 2022,Whitfield was featured as a speaker at the March for Our Lives protest held in Washington,D.C. [16] [17]
Whitfield has announced his candidacy for the 2025 Buffalo mayoral election,where he will challenge acting mayor Christopher Scanlon for the position. [18]
Whitfield is married to his wife,Cassieta. They live in the East Side neighborhood of Buffalo.
Byron William Brown II is an American politician who served as the 62nd mayor of Buffalo,New York from 2006 until his resignation in 2024. He was the city's first African-American mayor and longest-serving mayor of Buffalo. He previously served Western New York as a member of the New York State Senate and Buffalo Common Council. He is the first African-American politician elected to the New York State Senate to represent a district outside New York City and the first member of any minority race to represent a majority-white New York State Senate district. He announced in a September press conference that he would resign as mayor of Buffalo sometime in October. Brown's resignation took effect on October 15,2024,with Christopher Scanlon serving as acting mayor until the next mayoral election in 2025.

On February 9,2021,a mass shooting and bombing occurred at a medical clinic in Buffalo,Minnesota,United States. Just before 11:00 a.m. CST,Gregory Paul Ulrich,a 67-year-old man,shot five people at Allina Health's Buffalo Crossroads facility. One victim,Lindsay Overbay,died,and four others were critically injured from gunshot wounds. All of the victims were medical clinic staff. During the attack,Ulrich discharged three improvised explosive devices,one of which failed to detonate. He surrendered to police who were dispatched to the clinic,and he was taken into custody. He admitted to authorities that he fired on people inside the clinic and set off bombs.

On May 14,2022,a mass shooting occurred in Buffalo,New York,United States,at a Tops Friendly Markets supermarket in the East Side neighborhood. Ten people,all of whom were African Americans,were murdered and three were injured. The shooter,identified as 18-year-old Payton S. Gendron,livestreamed part of the attack on Twitch,but the livestream was shut down by the service in under two minutes. Gendron was taken into custody and charged with first-degree murder. He formally entered a plea of "not guilty" on May 19,2022. On November 28,2022,Gendron pleaded guilty to all state charges in the shooting,including murder,domestic terrorism,and hate crimes. On February 15,2023,Gendron was sentenced to 11 concurrent life sentences without the possibility of parole;as of that date,federal charges are still ongoing,and the federal prosecution also expressed their intention to seek the death penalty.
