Byron William Brown II is an American politician who served as the 62nd mayor of Buffalo,New York from 2006 until his resignation in 2024. He was the city's first African-American mayor and longest-serving mayor of Buffalo. He previously served Western New York as a member of the New York State Senate and Buffalo Common Council. He is the first African-American politician elected to the New York State Senate to represent a district outside New York City and the first member of any minority race to represent a majority-white New York State Senate district. He announced in a September press conference that he would resign as mayor of Buffalo sometime in October. Brown's resignation took effect on October 15,2024,with Christopher Scanlon serving as acting mayor until the next mayoral election in 2025.

On December 10,2019,a shooting took place at a kosher grocery store in the Greenville section of Jersey City,New Jersey. Three people were killed at the store by two assailants,David N. Anderson and Francine Graham. The assailants also wounded one customer and two police officers before being killed by police during an ensuing shootout. A Jersey City Police Department detective had also been shot and killed by the assailants at a nearby cemetery just before the grocery store attack.

On February 9,2021,a mass shooting and bombing occurred at a medical clinic in Buffalo,Minnesota,United States. Just before 11:00 a.m. CST,Gregory Paul Ulrich,a 67-year-old man,shot five people at Allina Health's Buffalo Crossroads facility. One victim,Lindsay Overbay,died,and four others were critically injured from gunshot wounds. All of the victims were medical clinic staff. During the attack,Ulrich discharged three improvised explosive devices,one of which failed to detonate. He surrendered to police who were dispatched to the clinic,and he was taken into custody. He admitted to authorities that he fired on people inside the clinic and set off bombs.

On May 14,2022,a mass shooting occurred in Buffalo,New York,United States,at a Tops Friendly Markets supermarket in the East Side neighborhood. Ten people,all of whom were African Americans,were murdered and three were injured. The shooter,identified as 18-year-old Payton S. Gendron,livestreamed part of the attack on Twitch,but the livestream was shut down by the service in under two minutes. Gendron was taken into custody and charged with first-degree murder. He formally entered a plea of "not guilty" on May 19,2022. On November 28,2022,Gendron pleaded guilty to all state charges in the shooting,including murder,domestic terrorism,and hate crimes. On February 15,2023,Gendron was sentenced to 11 concurrent life sentences without the possibility of parole;as of that date,federal charges are still ongoing,and the federal prosecution also expressed their intention to seek the death penalty.
