Garpiya is a family of long-range combat drone produced by IEMZ Kupol for use in the Russo-Ukrainian War. It incorporate engines, parts, and technology from China.

Manufacturing

The Garpiya is produced by IEMZ Kupol which is a subsidiary of Almaz-Antey. Its development included input from Chinese specialists in unmanned combat aerial vehicles. IEMZ Kupol has set up a factory in China to produce kits for export to Russia. [1] The main Russian manufacturing facility for Garpiyas is in Izhevsk, located in a former concrete plant acquired by IEMZ Kupol in 2020. [2]

The Garpiya incorporate engines, parts, and technology from China but is assembled in Russia. According to the company 500 drones were produced in the second half of 2023 and 2,000 were produced in the first half of 2024. [1]

The Garpiya-3 prototypes were produced in China and shipped to Russia for testing. [1]

Combat history

Their use and production was first extensively reported on by Reuters in 2024. [3] [4] According to Reuters, the Garpiya-A1 has been used against Ukrainian civilian and military targets in the Russian invasion of Ukraine. [1]

Design

They are similar in design to the HESA Shahed 136. The engine is a Limbach L550E from Xiamen Limbach. [5]

The Tor is an all-weather, low-to medium-altitude, short-range surface-to-air missile system designed for destroying airplanes, helicopters, cruise missiles, unmanned aerial vehicles and short-range ballistic threats (anti-munitions). Originally developed by the Soviet Union under the GRAU designation 9K330 Tor, the system is commonly known by its NATO reporting name, SA-15 "Gauntlet". A navalized variant was developed under the name 3K95 "Kinzhal", also known as the SA-N-9 "Gauntlet". A loitering munition, also known as a suicide drone, kamikaze drone, or exploding drone, is a kind of aerial weapon with a built-in warhead that is typically designed to loiter around a target area until a target is located, then attack the target by crashing into it. Loitering munitions enable faster reaction times against hidden targets that emerge for short periods without placing high-value platforms near the target area and also allow more selective targeting as the attack can be changed mid-flight or aborted.

Following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, China's position has been ambivalent. On one hand, it has blamed enlargement of NATO, which Russia has stated as a reason for starting the war. On the other hand, it has stressed respect for Ukraine's territorial integrity. <span class="mw-page-title-main">Aerial warfare in the Russian invasion of Ukraine</span>

During the Russian invasion of Ukraine, aerial warfare took place as early as the dawn of 24 February 2022, with Russian infantry and armored divisions entering into Eastern Ukraine with air support. Dozens of missile attacks were reported across Ukraine. The main infantry and tank attacks were launched in four spearhead incursions, creating a northern front launched towards Kyiv, a southern front originating in Crimea, a south-eastern front launched at the cities of Luhansk and Donbas, and an eastern front. Dozens of missile strikes across Ukraine also reached as far west as Lviv. Drones have also been a critical part of the invasion, particularly in regards to combined arms warfare. Drones have additionally been employed by Russia in striking Ukrainian critical infrastructure, and have been used by Ukraine to strike military infrastructure in Russian territory.

The Yelabuga drone factory is an unmanned aerial vehicle and loitering munition factory in the Alabuga Special Economic Zone, near Yelabuga, Republic of Tatarstan, Russia, operated by the Russian company Albatross. It develops drones for military use in the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
