Gary Deal (born April 2, 1940) was a weightlifter for the United States.
At only 10 years old, Deal was diagnosed with polio. This disease left him with a shrunken and weak right arm, shoulder, and right leg. The whole right side of his body was impaired and the only way he was able to move his right arm was with the assistance of his left arm. Deal's determination and will led to a slow and painful process of developing the muscles on the right side of his body. [1]
At 16 years old, he saw another person his age with a big arm who trained with weights. Standing at 6 feet tall weighing only 150 pounds, moving around was a difficult task for him. He began training with a barbell and eventually worked his way up to pressing 85 lbs, snatching 70 lbs, and jerking 100 lbs. However, his left side was doing most of the work. After extensive training with one of his friends, Deal slowly began to develop his right side. [1]
When Deal was 17 years old, he competed at a weightlifting meet in Omaha. At this event, he totaled 470 lbs on three lifts in the 181 lb category. Deal continued to work hard and strive towards getting stronger. He later won the heavyweight title in the Midwestern district and in 1958 won the National Teenage title in his class. During this time he weighed in at 201 lbs and lifted 220 on clean and press, 235 in snatch, and 330 on clean and jerk. Just two years later, he took second place in the Junior Nationals with a total of 800 lbs in the 198 lb weight class. At a later meet, in Omaha, Deal clean and jerked 345 lbs. Soon after, Deal married his wife and took a small break from lifting and competing. [1]
Deal took nearly two years off where his training was obsolete until he started implementing isometric training. This led to an increase in all of his lifts totaling 875 pounds. After he hit this landmark, he had another period of almost nonexistent gains because he was so busy with work. Deal had always been a split lifter but decided to train with the squat style. After spending two years mastering this technique, he realized this was the right style for him. [1]
Deal later learned of the power rack. He cut out the floor of his basement, dug down about two feet and built himself a power rack. Here he was able to use heavy weight on the rack which led to an exponential increase in his lifting numbers. He would perform 1 set of 3 reps in 3 different positions. For each position, Deal would place the pins about a foot apart and then pull the top pin and hold the bar against the top pin for about 6 seconds on the 3rd rep. [1]
Weightlifting is a sport in which athletes compete in lifting a barbell loaded with weight plates from the ground to overhead, with the aim of successfully lifting the heaviest weights. Athletes compete in two specific ways of lifting the barbell overhead. The snatch is a wide-grip lift, in which the weighted barbell is lifted overhead in one motion. The clean and jerk is a combination lift, in which the weight is first taken from the ground to the front of the shoulders, and then from the shoulders to over the head. The sport formerly included a third lift/event known as clean and press.
Powerlifting is a strength sport that consists of three attempts at maximal weight on three lifts: squat, bench press, and deadlift. As in the sport of Olympic weightlifting, it involves the athlete attempting a maximal weight single-lift effort of a barbell loaded with weight plates. Powerlifting evolved from a sport known as "odd lifts", which followed the same three-attempt format but used a wider variety of events, akin to strongman competition. Eventually, odd lifts became standardized to the current three.
Vasily Ivanovich Alekseyev was a Soviet weightlifter. He set 80 world-records and 81 Soviet records in weightlifting and won Olympic gold medals at the 1972 and 1976 games.
The clean and jerk is a composite of two weightlifting movements, most often performed with a barbell: the clean and the jerk. During the clean, the lifter moves the barbell from the floor to a racked position across the deltoids, without resting fully on the clavicles. During the jerk, the lifter raises the barbell to a stationary position above the head, finishing with straight arms and legs, and the feet in the same plane as the torso and barbell.
Douglas Ivan Hepburn was a Canadian strongman and weightlifter. He won weightlifting gold medals in the 1953 World Weightlifting Championships as well as the 1954 British Empire Games in the heavyweight division. He is also known as the first man to bench press 400, 450, 500, and 550 pounds (raw). During the 1950s he was publicly known as the "world's strongest man" for his many feats of strength. Hepburn has been inducted into the Canadian Olympic Hall of Fame (1953), Canada's Sports Hall of Fame (1955), and the B.C. Sports Hall of Fame (1966).
Paul Edward Anderson was an American weightlifter, strongman, and powerlifter. He was an Olympic gold medalist, a world champion, and a two-time national champion in Olympic weightlifting. Anderson contributed significantly to the development of competitive powerlifting.

Yury Ivanovich Zakharevich is a former Olympic weightlifter for the Soviet Union. He trained at Dynamo in Dimitrovgrad. Yury competed in the middle-heavyweight (90 kg), sub-heavyweight (100 kg) and heavyweight (110 kg) weight classes during his career.
Norair Nurikyan is a former Bulgarian weightlifter of Armenian descent. He is a two-time Olympic Champion and was awarded the Hero of Socialist Labor of Bulgaria and Order of the Bulgaria, First Degree titles. In 1994, Nurikyan was inducted into the International Weightlifting Federation Hall of Fame.

He is a three-time Olympic champion and five-time world champion competing in the 77 kg category until 2018 and 81 kg starting in 2018 after the International Weightlifting Federation reorganized the categories. He is widely considered as one of the greatest weightlifters of all time.
Ruslan Nurudinov is an Uzbekistani weightlifter of Tatar ethnic origin. He is the first world champion for Uzbekistan in weightlifting (2013). Nurudinov won a gold medal at the 2016 Olympics, setting a new Olympic record in the clean and jerk at 237 kg.
Jon Frederic Cole was a discus thrower,powerlifter, Olympic weightlifter and strongman from the United States. He competed in powerlifting just prior to the formation of the International Powerlifting Federation (IPF). Having set world records in the squat, deadlift and Total during his career, he was multiple times AAU US National Powerlifting Champion as well as an outstanding Olympic weightlifter, discus thrower and shot-putter. Being the "premier strongman" of the early 1970s for his overall excellence in powerlifting, Olympic lifting and strength-based track and field, Cole was at one time known as the "strongest man in the world" for holding the greatest combined powerlifting/weightlifting super total of all time. Jon Cole was not only officially the first man in history to total 2200 lbs, he also became the first man to squat over 900 lbs as well as the first to total 2300 lbs in competition on October 28, 1972. Today, he is enjoying legendary status in the powerlifting scene and is widely considered to be one of the all-time greatest powerlifters in the history of the sport. His lifts, which are considered as raw by today's standards, are still mostly unequaled in his weight class: He still holds the all-time greatest raw (unequipped) powerlifting totals in the 242 and the 308-pound division. While past his prime as a lifter, he competed in the first annual World's Strongest Man competition in 1977, where he finished in 6th place.

These can include: developing physical strength; promoting health and fitness; competing in weightlifting sports; and developing a muscular and aesthetic physique.

Akbar Djuraev is an Uzbekistani weightlifter, Olympic Champion and Junior World Champion. He won the gold medal in the men's 109 kg event at the 2020 Summer Olympics held in Tokyo, Japan. He also won the gold medal in the men's 109 kg event at the 2021 World Weightlifting Championships held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.
