Gary Griffith is a former commissioner of the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service,having served a term in office for the period 18 August 2018 to 17 August 2021 [1] Under the previous government,led by a coalition including the party currently in Opposition,he had been appointed as Minister of National Security in Trinidad and Tobago on Friday 6 September 2013. [2] Between May 2010 and September 2013,he had served as National Security Advisor to the Prime Minister. Griffith was a member of the Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force for 15 years,where he attained the rank of captain in 1998. He retired his Commissioned Officer position in May 2005. This attainment to the rank of captain was achieved after just six years service,which was an unprecedented achievement. He was the first military officer from this country to return home with a United Nations Peacekeeping Medal. [2] He has also received the Efficiency decoration medal [EDM] for 12 years distinguished service as well as the Meritorious medal for duties performed during the 1990 attempted coup in the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago.
Gary Griffith attended St. Mary's College for eight [8] years,from 1976 to 1984. After completing his Advanced Level studies he then began a career in the Military,and was enlisted on 1 June 1988. Griffith is also the holder of a MSc in Security Management from the Department of Criminology in the University of Leicester,United Kingdom,however,as can be noted from his achievements and experience,his managerial capabilities is not limited to security alone but also General Management,Public Relations,Protocol,Event Management and Human Resources to name a few.
1988–1990 In 1988 Gary Griffith enlisted into the Regiment and was immediately Commissioned by His Excellency the President Noor Hassanali to the rank of Second Lieutenant. After undergoing an intensive one year recruiting training programme in Trinidad,he was then selected to attend the prestigious and world-renowned Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in Surrey,England,where he attended a one-year Platoon Commander's Course in England,Wales and Cyprus. After successfully completing the course,he was also awarded the Brunei Award.
1990–1995 During the first half of his career from 1990 to 1995,after returning to Trinidad and Tobago,he held several levels of command among those being Platoon Commander,Detachment Commander,Company Second in Command,and Adjutant. He was actively engaged in Operations during the 1990 Attempted Coup in Trinidad and Tobago to ensure democracy was maintained and upheld.
1995–1999 In 1995 he was appointed as the aide to the Chief of Defence Staff under Brigadier General C Alfonso. He remained in this position from 1995 to 1999,under both Brigadier General C Alfonso [1995–1999],and Commodore A. Franklin [1999]. In 1998 he was promoted to the rank of captain,after just six years' service,which was an unprecedented achievement. He was then appointed Administrative,Finance,Welfare and Logistics Officer for over 300 troops from the CARICOM Forces that participated in the United Nations Mission in Haiti. The United Nations Peacekeeping Mission was a six-month tour of duty,and was Trinidad and Tobago's first-ever deployment of troops to participate in a peacekeeping operation under the United Nations. At the end of a successful tour of duty,he then had the honour of being the first-ever military officer from this country to return home with a United Nations Peacekeeping Medal.
On 6 August 2018,the Police Service Commission of Trinidad and Tobago announced the appointment of Gary Griffith as the new commissioner of police of the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service. Mr. Griffith received his letter of appointment on Friday 3 August 2018,as the new commissioner from Ms. Bliss Seepersad,chairman of the Police Service Commission. [3]
In September 2000,Captain Griffith was then personally requested by the prime minister of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago,the Honourable Basdeo Panday,to be reassigned to work directly with the prime minister himself,initially as the Comptroller of the Prime Minister's Residence,then also had him appointed as the military attaché to the prime minister,whereby Captain Griffith acquired several other responsibilities. [4] His role then became similar to that of the aide de camp to the president;hence he was also required to accompany the prime minister at most of his engagements. He was previously an acting senator for the Opposition and the advisor for two Opposition parties on National Security matters. He was the security adviser to the political party the United National Congress from 2004 to 2006 and then the security adviser to the political party Congress of the People from 2006 to 2010,when he was then appointed as the National Security Adviser. In 2013 under the People's Partnership Gary Griffith was appointed National Security Minister,becoming the fourth person to hold the critical post,since the People's Partnership Government took power in 2010. [5] In 2022,Gary Griffith formed a new political party,the National Transformation Alliance (NTA). He publicly expressed his ambition to become TT's next prime minister.
On 2 February 2015 the former Minister of National Security,Gary Griffith and former attorney general Anand Ramlogan were revoked of their appointment to office under request by former prime minister of Trinidad and Tobago Kamla Persad-Bissessar,along with the call for resignation from the former director of the Police Complaints Authority (PCA) David West following their roles in a witness-tampering investigation ordered by acting police commissioner Stephen Williams. The former prime minister also revoked the appointments of former senate president Timothy Hamel-Smith,former sports minister Rupert Griffith,former Ministry in the Works and Transport Minister Stacy Roopnarine,former minister in the National Security Ministry Embau Moheni,and former justice minister Emmanuel George. Persad-Bissessar had also given up the portfolio of Social Development and People Ministry. Griffith was succeeded by retired brigadier general Carlton Alfonso,who held the position as Minister of National Security until the general elections of 2015,in which the People's National Movement was elected into government. [6] The allegations started when former director of the Police Complaints Authority (PCA) David West,had signed a statement in which he claimed that the former attorney general Anand Ramlogan had asked the director of the PCA to withdraw a witness statement he had made in a defamation matter against the Opposition Leader at the time. Ramlogan denied the allegation and an investigation was subsequently launched by the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service. Shortly following,it was alleged that Gary Griffith,upon the advice of Anand Ramlogan,telephoned the director of the PCA to query whether or not he had withdrawn the witness statement in question. The former minister had later confirmed that such a call had indeed taken place. A few days later,on the night of 2 February 2015,the former prime minister addressed the public and press on the matters surrounding the investigation,in which she stated,"While I am not in a position to determine neither guilt nor innocence in this matter,it is of grave enough consequence to warrant serious consideration and immediate action." This was followed by stating that a request had been made to former president Anthony Carmona for the immediate removal of former attorney general Anand Ramlogan and former minister of national security Gary Griffith,along with the removal of former senate president Timothy Hamel-Smith,former sports minister Rupert Griffith,former Ministry in the Works and Transport Minister Stacy Roopnarine,former Minister in the National Security Ministry Embau Moheni,and former justice minister Emmanuel George. The former prime minister subsequently requested the appointment of former minister of legal affairs Prakash Ramadar to also serve as the minister of justice,Christine Hosein as Minister of the People and Social Development,Brent Sancho as Minister of Sport,Kwasi Mutema as Minister in the Ministry of National Security,Garvin Nicholas as Attorney General,and retired brigadier general Carlton Alfonso as Minister of National Security. Patrick Augustus Mervyn Manning was a Trinidadian politician who was the fourth Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago;his terms ran from 17 December 1991 to 9 November 1995 and from 24 December 2001 to 26 May 2010. He was also Political Leader of the People's National Movement (PNM) from 1987 to 2010. A geologist by training,Manning served as Member of Parliament for the San Fernando East constituency from 1971 until 2015 when he was replaced by Randall Mitchell and was the longest-serving member of the House of Representatives. He was the Leader of the Opposition from 1986 to 1990 and again from 1995 to 2001.
The United National Congress is one of two major political parties in Trinidad and Tobago and the current parliamentary opposition. The UNC is a centre-left party. It was founded in 1989 by Basdeo Panday,a Trinidadian lawyer,economist,trade unionist,and actor after a split in the ruling National Alliance for Reconstruction (NAR). After spending six years in opposition,the UNC won control of the government in 1995,initially in coalition with the NAR and later on its own. In the 2000 general election,the UNC won an absolute majority in the Parliament. In 2001,a split in the party caused the UNC to lose its parliamentary majority and control of the government. From 2001 to 2010,the UNC was once again Parliamentary Opposition party. In May 2010,the UNC returned to government as the majority party in the People's Partnership. The UNC's Political Leader,Kamla Persad-Bissessar,was sworn in as the first female Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago.
The People's National Movement (PNM) is the longest-serving and oldest active political party in Trinidad and Tobago. The party has dominated national and local politics for much of Trinidad and Tobago's history,contesting all elections since 1956 serving as the nation's governing party or on four occasions,the main opposition. It is one of the two major political parties in the country. There have been four PNM Prime Ministers and multiple ministries. The party espouses the principles of liberalism and generally sits at the centre to centre-left of the political spectrum.
The Trinity Cross was the highest of the National Awards of Trinidad and Tobago,between the years 1969 and 2008. It was awarded for:"distinguished and outstanding service to Trinidad and Tobago. It was awarded for gallantry in the face of the enemy,or for gallant conduct." Either nationals or non-nationals were awarded the honour,but no more than five may have been awarded in any year. The President was awarded the Trinity Cross in an ex officio capacity. The award was first presented in 1969,last conferred in 2005,and was subsequently replaced by The Order of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago in the year 2008.
The Jamaat al Muslimeen coup attempt was an attempt to overthrow the government of Trinidad and Tobago,instigated on Friday,27 July 1990. Over the course of six days,Jamaat al Muslimeen,a radical extremist Islamist group,held hostages at the Red House and at the headquarters of the state-owned national television broadcaster,Trinidad and Tobago Television (TTT). On 1 August,the insurgents surrendered. They were charged with treason,but were ordered released by the Court of Appeal. Twenty four people were killed and many more were injured in the coup.
Austin "Jack" Warner is a Trinidadian and Tobagonian politician,businessman,and former football executive. Warner was Vice President of FIFA and President of CONCACAF until his suspension and eventual resignation from these roles in 2011. He is also the former Minister of National Security of Trinidad and Tobago and was an elected member of the country's parliament from 2007 to 2015. He was also the owner of Joe Public F.C.,a professional football club in Tunapuna,Trinidad and Tobago. Warner has been implicated in numerous corruption scandals and was banned for life from football related activities by FIFA in 2015. He currently faces extradition to the United States to face corruption charges.
Dominic Kalipersad is a veteran journalist,and one of the most recognizable faces in Trinidad and Tobago. He is the Group Head of News at Caribbean Communications Network (CCN) Limited in Port-of-Spain,where he has taken the flagship television arm,CCN TV6,under his wing.
General elections were held in Trinidad and Tobago on 5 November 2007. Nomination day was 15 October. Five parties contested the elections;the ruling People's National Movement,the official opposition United National Congress–Alliance,the Congress of the People,the Tobago United Front–Democratic Action Congress and the Democratic National Assembly. Five independent candidates also ran.
Devant Maharaj is a Trinidad and Tobago politician,and social activist. He is a leading member of the United National Congress. On 27 June 2011,he became a member of the Senate of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago and Minister of Transport following his appointment as Chairman of the Public Services Transport Corporation of Trinidad and Tobago.
Anand Ramlogan is a member of the Bar of Trinidad and Tobago,England &Wales and the British Virgin Islands. He is the founder and head of Freedom Law Chambers which is based in the city of San Fernando,Trinidad. He served as junior counsel to the late Sir Fenton Ramsahoye QC in whose footsteps he followed to become the Attorney General of Trinidad and Tobago during the period 28 May 2010 –2 February 2015. As Attorney General,he was also the titular head of the bar.
The People's Partnership (PP) was a political coalition in Trinidad and Tobago among five political parties:the United National Congress (UNC),the Congress of the People (COP),the Tobago Organization of the People (TOP),Movement for Social Justice (MSJ) and National Joint Action Committee (NJAC). The political leader was Kamla Persad-Bissessar. The coalition was formed in advance of the 2010 general election attempting to form a multi-ethnic opposition bloc against the People's National Movement (PNM) government led by Patrick Manning. The coalition won the 2010 General Elections defeating the People's National Movement on May 24,2010. On September 7,2015,the coalition was defeated in the 2015 General Elections to the People's National Movement led by Keith Rowley. The coalition saw the departure of the Movement for Social Justice in 2012 and eventually disbanded on December 8, 2015.
Anthony Thomas Aquinas Carmona is a Trinidadian politician who was the fifth President of Trinidad and Tobago,from 2013 to 2019. Previously he was a High Court Judge at the Supreme Court of Trinidad and Tobago,and he served as a Judge of the International Criminal Court from 2012 to 2013.

The Chief of Defence Staff is the professional head of the Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force. He is responsible for the administration and the operational control of the military. The current chief is Air Vice Marshall Darryl Daniel who was appointed on 25 March 2019,Air Commodore and promoted to Air Vice Marshall effective November 01,2020. Unlike other Caribbean nations,the chief is not called the more common "Chief of Staff". This is due to the strong ties Trinidad and Tobago had to the British equivalent during the establishment of the TTDF.
Nicole Dyer Griffith is a former Miss Universe Trinidad and Tobago. After her reign as Miss Trinidad and Tobago she moved into the corporate sphere to become the Group Corporate Communications Manager at ANSA McAl Group of Companies. Nicole Dyer Griffith served as Senator and Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Communication.
The 2022 United National Congress internal election took place on 26 June 2022. Kamla Persad-Bissessar,political leader of the United National Congress,Leader of the Opposition of Trinidad and Tobago,former Prime Minister,and Member of Parliament for Siparia,went up for re-election with her slate of candidates on the Star Team. The Star Team ran unopposed for all but three three post in the UNC's national executive. These three candidates were independent and were not part of a slate of candidates. Fuad Khan,former Minister of Health in Persad-Bissessar's government and the former Member of Parliament for Barataria/San Juan challenged Persad-Bissessar for the post for political leader of the party. The internal election was meant to set the stage of the UNC's national executive (NATEX) for the upcoming local elections and to start preparing for the 2025 Trinidad and Tobago general election.
Garvin Edward Timothy Nicholas is a Trinidad and Tobago politician and former diplomat. He served as a temporary Opposition Senator representing the United National Congress (UNC) in the 8th Republican Parliament and the 10th Republican Parliament. He was the Trinidad and Tobago High Commissioner to the United Kingdom from 2010 until 2013 and the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary for Trinidad and Tobago to Denmark,Finland,Norway,Sweden and Germany. He served as the Attorney General for Trinidad and Tobago from 3 February 2015 until 17 June 2015. He is the leader of the Movement for National Development (MND),a political party which contested the 2020 general election.
